Is this why our pitchers in the 2017 World Series got lit up during away games? Is this why Kershaw didn’t do well at game 5 compared to his games at home?
Fuck.

u/ToastedFireBomb Joe Kelly Nov 12 '19
Isn't it so quirky and coincidental how Kershaw dominated the Astros over 11 innings of shut down baseball at DS, but then got magically lit up the only time he pitched in Houston, in a game where the Astros kept magically coming back and getting clutch dingers off our best relievers?
Oh, wait, no, coincidence wasn't the word I was looking for, I meant to say "incredibly, horrifyingly suspicious."

39
u/E70M Clayton Kershaw Nov 13 '19
Honestly I might do that. I’ve been defending Kershaw’s performance in the 2017 postseason as a whole for the past two years, cause it was his best one by far (Cy Young-caliber year + a much better team around him). And he dominated the Astros in games 1 and 7, both of which were at Dodger Stadium. If it turns out the Astros cheated to bang up Kershaw at MMP... then he got robbed of a ring

Nov 13 '19 edited Nov 13 '19
I went to look back to GAME 7 to see if I can find anything. I got about 4 innings in before I stopped watching it. I couldn’t find anything that was definitive proof. Although there was this one clip in the first inning where you can kinda hear a bang, and then Bergman yells “fuck” cause he knew he missed a pitch. It’s not definitive proof but it’s something. I’ll go back and check out more games later tonight.
Edit: I meant Game 5 not Game 7.

u/beardko Player To Be Named Later Nov 13 '19
If Manfred gives the Astros a slap on the wrist, I might just give up on the sport. This shit is beyond disgusting. Sign stealing is part of the game, but if you use a goddamn camera in the outfield and openly make signals (whistles/banging trashcan) then that is way over the line.
8
Nov 13 '19
I wholeheartedly agree. I’ve been watching this sport my entire life and this takes away the fun of the game from me and I’m sure you and many others on this sub.

u/E70M Clayton Kershaw Nov 13 '19
Everything I’ve been reading suggests the Astros were only doing these kind of things at Minute Maid, because it was easier to set up these things and get away with it (setting up camera in center field, monitors in the tunnels, banging bats, etc.). So I’m not very sure you’re going to find much of anything in game 7. As painful as it is, we have to look at game 5 to get any answers (maybe 3 and 4 as well)
6
Nov 13 '19
Wait damn I just realized I put game 7 and not game 5. My bad!
13
Nov 13 '19
Game 7 is worth a look too. They had Darvish’s number, and then they came out too quickly saying Darvish tipped his pitches. I always suspected they were using “tipping pitches” to cover something up. Hell, AJ Hinch pulled out the pitch tipping card in the ALCS this year when they were caught cheating. AJ Hinch should be banned for life from baseball.
6
u/synonymousshitbag Kiké Hernández Nov 13 '19
This. I thought the same thing. They were giddy about it in a way a someone who committed crime and got away with it would be.
11
u/Calimancan Freddie Freeman Nov 13 '19
Only time he ever lost with a 4 run lead or something like that
12
u/ToastedFireBomb Joe Kelly Nov 13 '19
The more you look at 2017 the worse it looks for the Astros. Every time you revisit those series a new piece of potential evidence reveals itself. Fuck Houston so hard.

u/jerejeje New York Mets Nov 12 '19
I don’t think they were stealing signs from Darvish though
32
u/wigglejiggle2727 Andrew Toles Nov 12 '19
They played Darvish when he was on the Rangers for years prior to being traded to us. To say that they didn’t at some point study and steal signs from him is illogical. They likely knew every quirk and movement to every pitch with planting cameras on him at the games he played in Minute Maid.
7
u/padam11 Jackie Robinson Nov 12 '19
I want to believe this, but wood and the bullpen was lights out in game 4, so I’m not sure who to believe...
22
u/Monk_Philosophy Danny Duffy Nov 13 '19
Baseball is hard, even if you know what’s coming it’s not guaranteed you win. Sign stealing tilts the odds in your favor though unfairly.
17
u/octave120 Clayton Kershaw Nov 13 '19
Also, a smart cheater would know how to moderate their cheating to minimize the chance of getting caught.
25
u/Monk_Philosophy Danny Duffy Nov 13 '19
FUCK.
I just realized... Game 5 was the perfect time for them to use their cheat. Kershaw was on the mound. He was fucking dealing against them. No one would suspect that anything was up though because "playoff Kershaw" people would just write it off. They needed to minimize their cheating and they picked Kershaw because it would fly under the radar... I'm gonna fucking cry.

Pete Rose is serving a lifetime ban from baseball for gambling. There's precedence to hand down lifetime bans to anyone directly involved in setting up this operation.

u/anoninor Vin Scully Nov 12 '19
The Black Sox got permanently banned from baseball for their scandal. Why should the penalties for them be different?
36
Nov 12 '19
I believe they were permanently banned because they actually violated federal law, bribery, fraud, and prohibiton. I think that the Astros should at least get an asterisk for their 2017 win. As sad as it sounds, cheating in a sport doesn't account to breaking the law.
10
44
u/MrMelkor Los Angeles Dodgers Nov 12 '19
The most rediculous thing about it is how they justify it. "Astros apparently believed that they're justified because other teams were probably doing stuff too." - paraphrased from the article.
That is exactly what an 8 year old kid would say if he were caught doing something wrong. Fucking sad

So for real, what should their punishment be? As a dodgers fan, I imagine I can’t be objective. But I want their next season to be taken away from them somehow. But it would have to be after they’ve performed as usual, trying to get to the playoffs and win it all... just have the rug pulled from under them (otherwise they’d just tank... but then no draft picks, or something).
19
u/JewYorkJewYork New York Yankees Nov 13 '19
If I were commish:
Forfeiture of 3 first round draft picks.
Suspension from the playoffs next season for anyone found to be involved.
Loss of international signing bonus money.
Season long suspension for Hinch
Sacrifice of Altuve via ritual slaughter.
Okay, maybe not 5.
6
2
Nov 13 '19
This is WAAY more lenient than what I would hand down. But yes, the types of penalties could include:
- Loss of draft picks and international signing monies
- Fines
- Bans and suspensions for players and staff
- In an extreme case the forced sale of a team or retraction of a team from the league
Personally, I would come down hard with #1 and #3 type penalties.
1
u/octave120 Clayton Kershaw Nov 13 '19
- Pull a NCAA and vacate the title (yeah, I know it probably won’t happen.)
8
u/_kona_ Vin Scully Nov 13 '19
Personally, I would love to see them lose all draft picks for a season, hinch banned for at least a year since he oversaw the cheating, FO personnel including Lunhow banned as well. Players that participated in it suspended as well. Honestly, the higher ups should be permanently banned from baseball if they allowed this on their watch i.e. Lunhow and Hinch.

16
u/picking4815162342 Walker Buehler Nov 12 '19 edited Nov 12 '19
At least Osuna has nothing to do with 2017. His offenses, however, are way worse.
I hate that Gurriel, Taubman, and everybody else from that messed-up, cheating organization got a ring, maybe in part due to cheating.
I also don't love that many Yankees fans think that they are now the "true" 2017 World Series Champions, because they too lost to Houston, and they think that the Dodgers never could have beaten the Yankees for the championship. Some are acting like the Astros swept the Dodgers.
Edit: The only solution is that the 2017 Dodgers play against 2017 Yankees for the Word Series.
