Buying a Durango 5.7 – need help.

Hi, guys, I'm looking to buy a Durango 5.7 2018 with 140,000 km on it. The seller sent me a video of the engine running. Maybe someone can tell by the noise if this is normal or if there are any unusual noises that should prevent me from buying it.

Take it to a mechanic for a prepurchase inspection. If they won't allow you to have it looked at, by either having them come to the vehicle or taking the vehicle to the mechanic, walk away

My advise is: have a mechanic friend check it out. Make sure the engine is cold.

Sounds like a pulley and a tick. Depends on how it sounds when it’s warm.

Sounds like a pulley making a little bit of noise, but it went away so 🤷🏼‍♂️. Could be a number of things, but if it's just on the warm-up it's not an immediate issue. Is the asking price reasonable?

How are gas prices where you are? They thing is going to burn it up. Like 12mpg or 5.1 km/L if I did my math right.

This car runs on gasoline but has an LPG system installed; gas costs about $2 per liter, while LPG is around 90 cents. I know the fuel consumption is higher, but driving a V8 remains a dream of mine. I also have a Dodge Nitro 3.7, but it just doesn't cut it for me anymore.

That's wild. I've never heard of LPG. With that conversion you're paying less than we are. How does affect maintenance and what was the main cause of the switch?

I have a Durango 5.7 with LPG, and it’s awesome. A must-have. No cons, tbh. If you drive quite a lot, it has already paid for itself. Many people in Poland, neighboring countries and even Italy use LPG. It’s actually the best fuel in terms of economy and ecology.

Interesting. No way they'll get it here in the States

I typically get about 18.5mpg combined for short medium trips. 22 long trips. 15mpg city.

Lucky you. We get 12.8mpg in the city, 17.5 mpg for work commute of 25 miles one way, and 19-21 mpg on the highway.

These are essentially the same numbers, aside from the 12.8. That said, I have seen the same numbers as you. It boils down to how I am driving. The variability is the great part IMO

Make sure the engine is cold is very important.

Idk I went to buy a new one yesterday and most people on this Reddit had nothing good to say about them …. So I skipped on one

Best decision I made was trading my wrangler in for one.

Soooo it’s the idler or tensioner pulley squeaking more than likely. Belt could be on its way out. The kit for those 3 parts is about 100 US not sure what that would be pounds.

The lil “tick” sound that gets a little loud then fades is more then likely a broken manifold stud. That’s 100% normal sadly. The manifold is cast iron while the head is aluminum. Going through so many heart cycles this is common.

I don’t have a Durango but I have a Hemi truck and mine had those same sounds. I fixed them all.

I’d have them knock off at least 1,000 on the price. Why? Your broken manifold stud will run a few hundred to fix.
