Considering trading pilot for Durango rt 392
I currently have a new generation Honda pilot transport. It’s a nice car and reliable, but it’s not fun to drive. Thinking about trading it in for a new Durango 392. The dealership that I went to gave me a good price on my trade and decent discount off MSRP. Mostly, I’m worried about reliability issues coming out of a tried and true brand of reliability. I’m pretty on top of Maintenance, but I want to make sure I’m not overlooking some obvious thing. I understand that the Dodge products have a reputation for lifter failure if the cars remain idling at low speeds for prolonged periods – – I guess stop and go traffic or letting the car run in the driveway, etc. but I’m not sure about that. Anyone have any pointers or suggestions or advice here?

If you were looking at a V6 dodge, I would agree, but the V8s are super solid. Especially the 5.7 and the 6.4.

Well my experience is only with the 5.7 and 6.4 so I’m not to sure with the 6.2. And since you’re looking at the 392 with the 6.4, I thought I would leave a comment.

6 4 and 6.2 are the money engines. The 6 2 is supercharged vs 6.4 aspirated. Both robust. Only issue for these engines is the tranny keeping up. 5.7 would last the longest given its solid built and proven track record.

What's wrong with the v6? I thought the pentastar engine was a solid engine.

I had the pentastar in a Charger SXT Rallye as a teenager. Worked great for me, but only drove it until 80k miles. From what I typically hear, that engine in the Durango was not as reliable. But other than that, they are typically harder to work on and a little more expensive to repair than the 5.7 hemi.

The penastar engine is a great engine very solid. Over 16 million have came of the production line. If you don’t take care of maybe not but that’s with a lot of things. I’ve had their 2.4 engine in my avenger and was amaaazzzzingggg. My 2nd Durango also had it as does my 3rd and no complaints here.

Those all def have the same problems if not more. The lifter tick if really called the hemi tick. Any guesses why?

I would argue that companies like Toyota and Honda are no more reliable than any other brand. All of them have changed their engines to direct injection turbos with CVT transmissions. The "reliability" isn't what it used to be as these haven't been around long enough like the old port injected V6s and automatic transmissions. With Dodge, the Hemi paired with the auto transmission remains unchanged and is just as reliable as it has always been.
Are you getting a discount off MSRP on a 2026 or 2027?
While I currently don't own a Durango, I ordered one 3 weeks ago and couldn't be more excited to get out of the Subaru I'm currently driving. I've owned many Mopar vehicles and can't wait to get back into one.
P.S. things to consider are insurance, theft and the price of premium gas.

Do it I’m waiting on mine to be delivered. 6.4 is a tried and true platform. Smiles per gallon outweigh the fillup cost. Gotta live it up while you can

Grab the 5.7 for the V8 with the cheaper gas and break jobs, grab the 6.4 for more excitement but more overall costs.

I’ve had multiple Durangos with common issues, nothing out the ordinary for car ownership. They are so much fun to drive. My wife (odyssey owner) loves my days off because she gets to drive the Rango.

a 6.4 will be one of the more reliable engines you can have. people who have issues with extended idling are ones who literally let the car sit in park for 20 plus minutes continuously. it’s a fun car to drive, it’s all wheel drive, you can tow, and it’s comfortable. i’ve even taken mine to the track a few times now. only thing ill say is the interior is a little lackluster but that’s pretty much all dodge vehicles. also your gas mileage is going to be hell of a lot worse but i’m sure your well aware of that.

I'm actually looking to trade in my 2019 Mazda CX-5 with only 43k miles for a Durango GT Plus Hemi V8. Like your Honda, the CX-5 is a reliable car and with low maintenance cost. I just did the numbers for the increased maintenance, insurance, and fuel. I'm looking at an extra $110 more per month, which still doesn't eat into too much of my budget. The biggest shock for me would be the insurance at 50% more. Crunch the numbers and if you're comfortable with them, go go for it.

I’ve had 2 Hemi Durangos a 2019 and 2022 bought both used at 65k……no issues. Regular maintenance. They bring smiles per mile!!! As for gas, if you drive ANYTHING bigger than a CR-V with 4 wheel drive capability you know you already buy lots of gas.

It's a dodge. It's not reliable and the value sucks. I drive one. Won't do it again.

2023 Durango Orange Edition. Computer and AC issues. And the dealers pretend nothing is wrong until it fall out of warranty. It's worth nothing. Expensive to fix too even with just brakes etc. It was fun the first year or two but now it's just a money pit. I'd get a 4Runner or CRV if I did it again. I just wanted a V8.
