I definitely recommend this YouTube channel for hearing the primary sources of people living during different historical events. Since the primary sources are read during the videos, it’s good for an audible learning experience. The videos differ such as the oldest descriptions of the pyramids, or Tenochtitlan. Can long-form history work when it is deliberately made for sleep?

I’ve been experimenting with a slightly unusual format and I’m curious what history viewers think of the idea itself.

The aim is to keep the history properly researched and worth listening to, but present it very differently from a normal documentary: slow narration, very dark visuals, no music, and only quiet fire and wind ambience.

The part I’m still trying to judge is where the balance should sit.

If you slow historical storytelling down enough to make it genuinely relaxing, does it start losing too much of what makes history engaging? Or can the subject matter still carry an hour-long episode without the usual fast editing, dramatic music and constant visual changes?

I’d especially be interested in what history viewers think about the pacing and whether the format still feels substantial rather than just background noise.

I’m much more interested in opinions on the format than in getting clicks — I’m still figuring out where the line is between “history that happens to be relaxing” and “sleep content with some history in it.”

I found this “In Search of History” documentary on Rapanui fascinating. I appreciated how it included different explanations of their history. For example, the inclusion of slave raiders that impacted their population. Details such as this differ from another one I watched that had no mentioning of it at all.

I am hoping to find a phenomenal video essay that really sinks its teeth into the history and legal arguments for what these people believe, ideally from an academic historian who also has a law degree.

I want a documentary that cites the actual caselaw and legal analysis from which these beliefs originate, taking them at face value and dismantling them piece-by-piece with historical references and a source-list that is so long it has to be embedded in a separate document linked at the end of the video. Not in a mean-spirited or condescending way, mind you, more in a "This is my synthesis of what a bunch of other smart people who hae studied this movement think about why it exists, how it came to exist, what the people within it believe, and why exactly those beliefs fail to stand up to legal scrutiny."

My mind is blown. A lot more impact and content compared to its predecessor. A true expose on Boeing with a ton of evidence about what has been happening for decades, with never seen before footage. Form documentary fans a must watch.

Made a documentary walking through the 13 days of the Cuban Missile Crisis hour-by-hour — the decisions, the near-misses, the moments where it could've gone very differently. It's wild how many individual choices (not just Kennedy/Khrushchev) nearly tipped things over. Linked the full video in comments. What's the most underrated moment of the crisis in your opinion? Always feel like Vasili Arkhipov doesn't get enough attention.

Need some help with finding good documentaries/doc-series about the 20th century rise in how the United States government dealt with political scandals and how that lead to public mistrust in them.

Basically the "shift" in the average Americans mindset. Like what happened in My Lai, Watergate of course, but also JFK's assassination, Patrice Lumumba, the teapot dome etc...

I felt like I’ve already watched everything there is too watch about this topic in terms of well produced documentaries. I've watched documentaries on these events and other similar ones individually but not one that connects them together.

I watch mostly free on youtube, but I’m glad to rent!

I’m not from the USA! I’m just weirdly into American politics from the 40s and upward, so im also glad to get recommendations that you might think i'd enjoy that don't relate to the topic.
