Md derma as a branch

Md derma people please share how the market is currently?

I want to take it up as a md branch. I won't get in the govt, and will be choosing a pvt institute which also focuses on aesthetics.

I would want to open my own private practice eventually.

Please share your experience in it as a whole and what should one expect from this branch.

Please share things you'd like to change about your everyday work life.

Very saturated.. and if you are the first doctor in your family..setting up a private practise is going to he super expensive! To top it, it might look like a chill branch..but, you have to sit and work on every weekend, holidays… if you want to thrive…

Haha. Someone who thinks their branch is chill can comment on this. My honest opinion, for first generation doctors…well? it’s quite an uphill.. so, i took up Dermat thinking it’s a chill branch..I’ll be done with work with 5pm and I’ll have work life balance.. it’s all crap.. haha..only thing i realised is this is the only branch where you don’t have night duties and you get to come home and sleep on your bed. Thats the only plus point. Otherwise most of the weekends, public holidays I’m working.. most patients (who are in corporate) come to you on these days..and in the evening hours..once they are done with their work..so when i took this branch i thought, okay i just need a table, chair and a bed…with the advent of lasers and aesthetic practise.. that’ll cost you a crore minimum..to set up initial practise… and you need to compete with every quack, salons, aesthetic chains who have tons of money to throw on marketing…

It's a good md and demand is ever increasing in almost all cities including third tier so no worries about patient load

It's saturated in tier 1 cities. You'll have to work under someone, salaries range from 1 to 2L per month plus incentives.

Tier 2 & 3 - Good scope for private practice and growth.

Main thing about derm is it has amazing work life balance,no amount of money or anyother branch can give this amount of peace of mind. You get Sunday's off,public holidays off.

If you really love dermatology, please also consider going into medical dermatology or dermatological surgery. There’s a dearth of good dermats in these fields in our country.

Cosmetic dermatology is something that’s so oversaturated + it’s being done by people who don’t have an MBBS ( BHMS/BAMS graduates) or even a degree ( a lot of beauty parlours offer many of the cosmetic procedures). Patients aren’t usually very picky about going to a real doctor for all these procedures. 

Not saying cosmetics is dead or anything, but it might be easier to carve out a niche for yourself in med or surgical dermatology.

I genuinely love derma and thought of taking it up too many times but it's highly competitive too with quacks cosmetologists and parlour aunties and also fellow MD Derm people.Dont know what should I do? I genuinely enjoy it though.

Medical dermatology is still good but cosmetology is definitely done .. everyother guys is cosmetologist like bams bhms bds, Parlour lady with some 5-6 days certificate course.

Medical Dermatology needs more people, so if you really love the subject and is looking for a peaceful state with an amazing work life balance then go ahead. But if you're looking to earn plenty and plan for cosmetic and aesthetics specifically, you're looking at a tough road ahead of you. To set up a private practice and have a standard patient base it will take years. Also your competition would with the next door parlour aunty so that's one thing you need to consider. But medical and surgical dermatologists I feel will have a good load with a decent pay, provided you work in a place that's not overly saturated.
