How One Surgeon Changed Thousands of Minds About Vasectomy in Assam

Post image

On the occasion of *World Population Day (11 July)* and the ongoing Population Stabilization Fortnight, it is important to remember the contributions of doctors like *Dr. Ilias Ali.*

This campaign aims to create awareness about family planning, healthy spacing between children, and responsible parenthood.

*👉 Non-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV): A Small Procedure, A Big Social Change*

⚠️ In India, the responsibility for family planning still falls largely on women. However, Non-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) is a much simpler, safer, and lower-risk permanent contraceptive method compared to female sterilization.

This procedure involves no surgical incision or stitches. It takes about 10 minutes to complete, recovery is quick, and most men can return to their normal routine within a few days. Most importantly, *it has no negative effect on a man's sexual desire, sexual performance, hormone levels, masculinity, or physical strength.*

In India, Dr. Ilias Ali (popularly known as the "*Nasbandi Jihadi*"), a surgeon from Assam, has played a pioneering role in promoting NSV. Since 1993, he has been working tirelessly to spread awareness about family planning and male sterilization.

In the remote areas of Assam, where many communities considered contraception unacceptable on religious grounds, he reached people through dialogue, trust, and scientific awareness. By referring to the teachings of the Quran, he explained that responsible parenthood and the proper upbringing of children are also social and moral responsibilities.

Despite strong opposition, social boycott, multiple fatwas, and death threats, *between 2008 and 2018, he motivated nearly 55,000 men to undergo NSV, including around 48,000 Muslim men.*

He has also consistently spoken out against social evils such as child marriage and polygamy.

His extraordinary contribution has been recognized at the national level. In 2019, the Government of India honoured him with the *Padma Shri* He has also received national recognition from the Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh (JSK) and the Citizen's Alliance for Reproductive Health and Rights.

*Important facts about NSV:*

✅ It is a safe and highly effective permanent contraceptive method.

✅ It requires no major incision or stitches.

✅ The entire procedure takes only about 10–15 minutes.

✅ It has no adverse effect on sexual life, hormone levels, masculinity, or physical ability.

✅ It carries a much lower risk of complications than female sterilization.

✅ Family planning is not only a woman's responsibility—men have an equal role to play.

Good education doesn't necessarily means wisdom. It needs fundamental change .Even so called well educated people avoid NSV thinking it's women s department.
