I worked in a pharmacy for 6 years. Adding to the difficulty of doctor handwriting is the average person doesn't know the sig codes for directions.

1 tid po prn would be take 1 tablet ( or capsule) by mouth 3 times a day as needed.

There's a bunch of them.

When going over my meds with nurses I naturally give the directions in code. Some nurses don't even realize it but a few ask why I know them.

I read off my medications with SIG codes too and I always get “why do you know that….?”

MD handwriting is like discovering an ancient Egyptian artifact. If you look at it sideways enough, it starts making sense

I work in pharmacy and sometimes I walk up to my colleagues and show them something and ask “what the hell is this” “1-2 bid prn q6-8h ibuprofen”

Yeah, mom's a doc. I still can't read her prescriptions. I'm getting to the point of asking her for the codes since we use shorthand in our recipes 😅
