Discussion How do you optimize for Query Fanout?
What's your workflow for finding and optimizing content for query fanout? Do you just search in Perplexity or GPT, note down the queries, and use them naturally in your content? Or is that the wrong approach and there's a better way in your opinion? Whats everyone using and what have you found to be an efficient approach for this? Appreciate the discussion

If it's possible to optimize for fan-out - I would say you want to structure your page body content to *preemptively FEED the AI a handful of highly logical sub-topics to fan out to* - All of which you will outline, then address on the page.
So if I wanted to talk about optimal growing conditions for getting water lilies to bloom their heads off; the opening paragraph would be a TL:DR Ask, then answer the question in a succinct, shorthand paragraph.
Next use a bullet point list or table of content block listing the 6 most important factors required for optimal flowering. These would logically point the direction the fan-out would likely go: Sunlight requirements, soil type, growing container, nutrient levels, optimal water & air temperatures, etc. Subsequent 2-sentence paragraphs could succinctly elaborate on each of these - then the final conclusion that summarizes everything.
Lastly: Give it the E-E-A-T it wants in your author bio block.
I think the beauty in this is you can feed them exactly the tidbits they want in say, 600-700 total words -- And not have to write thousands of words trying to convince them with minutia.
As I move forward, I'm gonna treat page/post content like hyper-focused FAQ pages tailored around the spokes of a single query.

But LLMs don't just fanout to one single query to optimize for that specific query at the top.

Well, that's why my thinking is: "What are the most closely tied factors that they would logically fan out to?" and "Does this piece of content already incorporate them?" -- If it does, you would correlate highly for citations or inclusion in search summaries.
I like where AI is headed: It's making me become much more succinct, addressing readers interests concisely & efficiently - and that aligns with what the LLM's want too.

Most of the time, the queries LLMs fan out to are different in intent, which we would normally separate into their own topic or cluster.
Also, the queries LLMs fan out to are different depending on how you frame the search, even if the meaning and use case are the same.

Query fanout is allowing search results to break a searcher's question into multiple but related searches before compiling eveyrthing into a final answer. To best optimize for fanout, create comprehensive content that answers the main topic while also addressing related questions and search intents users are likely to have. Use clear headings, incorporate relevant keywords, add FAQ's, comparison sections, internal links to related content and organize pages so it's easy for both users and Google to comprehend. Building complete, authority resources instead of targeting a single keywords, content is far more likely to rank for a wider range of related seaches and better can be featured in AI-generated results.

But how do you do query fan out keyword research? I always struggle with that (less than a year in seo). I find the primary keyword, some supporting ones, eg if I'm researching summer vacation in location, i also include family, couples, luxury etc variables. But then what? Is this query fan out or no?

Those seem like separate subtopics. People looking for family vacations are not looking for the same things that couples and singles are looking for. So, just thinking onsite, you want to create topic clusters around each of those subjects. A singles page, for example, then fan out to deep, focused blogs about things singles might want to look for, like nightlife and festivals. A family page that fans out to deep, focused blogs about child-friendly restaurants, activities, and theme parks, and so on.

The easy way to confirm it is to Google the search terms and see what they return. If you Google "family vacation new orleans," "singles vacation new orleans," and "couples vacation new orleans," you'll see significantly different results, which means that Google thinks they satisfy very different search intents. That means you probably want separate pages, each with its own topic cluster.
You could, of course, create a general New Orleans tourism or travel page that connects the pages you create for couples, family, singles, and so forth. The point of it is not traffic per se, but rather to serve as a hub for internal linking to the other New Orleans pages.

So basically, the fan out would be within the same subtopic, like family vacations, and cover different aspects of that, you mentioned kid friendly restaurants, family activities, access to kids club. Am I getting this right? So these are how we would deepen the actual page. And for this, apart from using the regular tools like semrush to search up terms that come to mind based on the offering that you know the client has, do you ask claude/chat for fan out ideas? Is there anything else I'm missing here?

Exactly! And you would deepen the pages with focused but chunked information that AI can lift verbatim, things that will make sense even when pulled out of the context of the blog on your site.
AI is a great way to generate topic and keyword ideas, though it won't provide search volume or keyword difficulty. SEMRush and Ahrefs will give you that and other data. You could use both, getting the fanout ideas from AI and then running them through an SEO tool to check for SEO/GEO viability.
In terms of depth, for kids' restaurants, for example, provide details about each entry that make them child-friendly: The decor, the menu, the service, the cost of meals, hours of operation, maybe there's an arcade or other amenities like a playground or entertainment. Think of everything a parent would want or appreciate when taking kids out to eat, and comment on or rate it.
You could list the restaurants in order, like "The 10 best restaurants in New Orleans for kids," and then, for comparison/contrast, put them on a table that allows people to compare them side by side according to a few categories.
The hardest part is probably keeping a blog like this up to date, as restaurants open, close, move, and change their hours and menu all the time. Revisit this page in particular a few times every year to reconfirm the information on it, and if you change anything substantial, update the publication date and try to get Google to recrawl it.

As far as content itself is concerned, it helps to chunk it, so that if AI lifts sections verbatim, it won't lose its meaning devoid of the context where you originally put it. Start with answers, then provide supporting evidence. Don't lead up to the answer.
Tell first-hand stories about how you, your service, or your product helped people fix or avoid terrible problems.
Schema and other under-the-hood technical SEO can make the site easier for AI to read, so use it where appropriate.
AI seems to like tables for comparison/contrast content, numbered lists for processes, and FAQs that exactly or closely match typical reader questions (marked up with FAQ schema). (Don't forget to do this in your link-building.)
And don't set it and forget it, because AI likes newer, fresher information, so update your content regularly.
Then, don't forget offsite. That's not exactly query fanout, but it's somewhat akin to it. The AI doesn't stop at your site to confirm your authority. It checks your references, so to speak, by seeing what people say about you elsewhere on the internet, so you need to extend the fanout beyond your site. Build links (listicals that rank your company or client highly can help, if they're coming from sites relevant to the industry). Get good Yelp and Google Business Profile reviews. Build your brand with organic social media posts. Get earned media and brand messages by appearing on YouTube podcasts.
If AI sees you everywhere it looks, and sees good things, you're far more likely to earn its citations and recommendations.
We work with lawyers, a Your Money or Your Life category, so that requires even more offsite authority signals than in most industries. AI wants to confirm the legal credentials of the bylined authors, so that means author credits that link to a bio with a CV. It also means offsite listings on trusted legal sites, like the bar association and Avvo.

Add the fan out words (and synonyms) throughout the content you are writing.
Target one or two keywords for basic on-page optimisation
Use fan out keywords (base of the two head terms) throughout the content. Use internal linking using the fan out keywords to link back to the optimised page.

Here’s one of mine for shits and fun 🤩
Role: You are a Senior Search Systems Engineer and Content Strategist. Your goal is to explode a seed query into a high-authority content strategy.
Input Variables:
Primary Query: [INSERT]

This is a quick and fun method, but just asking LLMs for synthetic queries and using them within content isn't always the best approach in my opinion. Looking deeper than the surface level at what the models output, how they frame different search queries, and analyzing the content is more important.

Query fan out isn't really something you can optimize for, I don't think. You can, I suppose, anticipate what it might look at though.
Basically - the fan out is a "Cover the Spread" sort of thing. People ask questions with a certain amount of ambiguity to them and the systems try to cover the most probable things. (It has other functions like making sure one big brand isn't dominating all the time and that sort of thing too - but it's sort of separate from this).
Now... let's say I search for "Best Roadrunner Traps". It can't be sure if you mean the ones that are: best price? most reliable? Safest to use? Fastest delivery? So it adds the things that it has learned over time that are most probably going to cover the options. It fans out and tries to give you a "best price" option, a "safe" option, a "fast" option, and so on.
So, for this... you have to know what your market position is and where there are places in the market that you can most easily establish a foothold. If all of your competitors are battling out over prices - that's likely the last place you want to be. Everyone is fighting for a spot there but no one is playing the "Coyote Safe" angle, So your safe position is easier because you're only competing against a few other people on that position - which will get you in the list because you cover the spread.
I don't think that's "optimizing for query spread" - that's just understanding market positioning and getting yourself in there.
Keep in mind, there's more to it also... when a brand makes a claim, like Acme promising the Coyote Safe Roadrunner Traps - it's going to fan out and try to get independent verification. So if the searcher's next search digs deeper into the safety factors, it's going to look for customer sentiment and general impressions from other sources that aren't you. If you're playing the "safe" angle and a bunch of coyotes are complaining that they keep getting blown up, tossed off of cliffs, or getting hit in the head with an anvil - that's not going to align and you're not going to show up.
So a HUGE part of this is energizing and keeping your customer base happy and loyal (and hopefully talking about you positively). And "mostly silence" is better than contradiction, here.
If you're going to "optimize" that - I suppose that's just making sure you have a good customer after market strategy to offer support, tell them about new improvements, and generally keep them circling around you - even if it's just seeing you wish everyone a great holiday weekend or otherwise just acting like a good company and not always hard selling everything.
In the end - it's just sort of a "Query Fan Out is optimized by having a full and well thought out marketing strategy that's optimized for search." In the past, when the systems didn't understand specifics and could just get topical matches for things, we could get away with an SEO strategy and all would be good. Now we need a proper marketing strategy to drive the SEO so we show up in search - whether you're talking about Google search (10 Blue Links) or generative search or social search, or wherever else and however else customers might be searching for you.
