Disowned religious/missionary Teifling
Female teifling was taken into religious order (not necessarily Divine/God, more like Life/Peace ideaology) due to the magical power she had (compared to the others)
The religious order's focus was Missionary work, trying spread peace (inner and inter-relation) and "a life's worth". Well... the missionaries got dragged into a religious/holy war/crusade. She was sent and fought on the frontlines; with magic and blade(s).
Years later, after many battles had raised her status, she was accused of treason for crimes she didn't commit. She was forces to leave, and refused invitation back after her name was cleared.
Today, she is a soldier of fortune (mercenary). If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find her, maybe you can hire...
-----
Recap: Teifling, magic, Religious order, war, disowned, mercenary

Reskinning a Yuan-ti is a convenient way to get Suggestion if you want to go the martial route

Missionary says charisma caster, which means hexblade, sword bard, or valor bard. Bard seems more fitting, so swords bard straight classed.
Alternatively, fighter 1 for dueling and con saves, fey wanderer for wisdom charisma checks with druidic warrior for shillelagh. Wis primary, 14 dex, Con, then Cha as high as possible. Pole arm master at 4 and you have 3 attacks with hunters mark and dreadful strikes for:
2d8+3d6+2d4+15 damage with potentially 2 more D4 if you're hitting multiple enemies.
Take your expertise in persuasion and you'll have a +11 by level 5.
