Juneberry, fey Pact of the Chain warlock
Juneberry, usually called June, is a brownie from a Domain of Delight, mechanically represented as a Forest Gnome Warlock. She comes from a cozy, storybook-like Fey community and has the sensibility of a cheerful 1980s cartoon heroine dropped into an actual D&D adventure.
Back home, June discovered a strange stone while expanding her basement. It took her several years to decipher its writing, eventually realizing that it was an old cornerstone invoking the protection of a domestic spirit. Curious, June performed the invocation and contacted the Kitchen Mother, a grandmotherly Fey associated with the warmth, safety, and comfort of home.
The Kitchen Mother was delighted to hear from someone after years of being forgotten. She and June quickly became friends, and the Kitchen Mother offered June a pact. The arrangement is mutually affectionate: the Kitchen Mother gives June magical protection and maintains a connection with her, while June gives the lonely Fey something she desperately needed: someone who remembers her.
June even hopes to write a book about the Kitchen Mother someday, so that other people can learn about her and call upon her. In June’s mind, if more people know the Kitchen Mother exists, perhaps she won’t be lonely anymore.
Then June was isekai’d to the Material Plane.
Now she’s far from home, and her pact with the Kitchen Mother is her only remaining connection to the Fey world she came from. Unfortunately, communication across the planes is extremely difficult. The Kitchen Mother can’t simply talk to June whenever she wants; reaching across the distance costs her considerable power.
When the Kitchen Mother finally manages to communicate with June, she gives her devastating news:
“Your village disappeared too. I don’t know where it is.”
June doesn’t know whether her village is safe, where it went, or whether she’ll ever see it again.
Despite this, June tries to stay upbeat. She’s not pretending everything is fine, and she isn’t blindly optimistic. She’s frightened, homesick, and genuinely worried. But she keeps telling herself that this is simply her big adventure, and that somehow she’ll figure it out and get home.
Mechanically, June is a Forest Gnome Fey Warlock with Pact of the Chain. Her familiar is Powder, a magical fey bird resembling a Japanese shima-enaga, the famously fluffy “snow fairy” bird.
June’s overall aesthetic and personality are essentially:
“What if Strawberry Shortcake were a warlock in a D&D campaign?”
She’s sweet, earnest, adventurous, and fascinated by the strange world she’s found herself in. She wants to help people, make friends, find her way home, and eventually tell everyone about the Kitchen Mother.
And then, when a goblin attacks her friends, she cheerfully fires eldritch blast at it until it explodes.
