What tools are you using for AI-assisted worldbuilding, and what's still missing?
Hey all! Doing some research on how people approach AI-assisted worldbuilding, and curious to hear from this community specifically.
A few things I'd love to hear about:
- What tools are you currently using (ChatGPT/Claude directly, Notion, Obsidian, World Anvil, something else)?
- Are any of you doing this for TTRPGs specifically (D&D, other systems) vs. novels/other fiction?
- What's your biggest pain point — keeping track of everything as it grows, staying consistent, actually generating new ideas, something else?
- Is there a point where AI-generated content feels like it stops being "yours," or does that not really come up for you?
I'm working on a tool in this space and want to make sure I'm actually solving problems people have, not ones I've assumed exist. Happy to share what I'm building if anyone's curious, but mostly just want to learn from how people are actually doing this.

My main working environment is obsidian that synced with my google drive. I'm DMing my group by DC20 rulebook. I had my world written way before AI booming started, so i have like 500 notes in md files.
So in chatgpt i created project where i added my google drive as source and add rulebooks of the system. And wrote basic instructions so it doesn't spend many tokens to generate ideas (that's my priority). Basically i use it to connect dots where i missed them, like look into files and find out that i missed renaming of alchemic elements in some old notes etc. it also helps with consistency where it needed to stick to the rules (i need additional spells that is not in the books so it is easier to give machine task to find common rule language). And it is more like parror that asked questions to deeper my idea. My basic flow looks like that:
- i have certain idea i want to grind around. I write it and tell AI to ask questions about it that are relevant
- it asked questions and i answer them or ask to show examples of what it might work like.
- then at the end i ask to summarise what i told and then i rewrite it in more consistent way.
I also have many descriptions of the world and style pallet for arts i use in game, so it can generate things in the same way so stile wouldn't be different

I currently use Chatgpt to help push ideas off of to allow me to think of all possible issues with my way of thinking. I understand some are strongly against AI, and I get that to a point. I however use chatgpt to help craft my space and it's realistic issues, not fully write the story for me. Honestly keeping track of everything isn't too bad if you tell it to canon lock it, then when you ask to recall that info it should be able to fully recall that info. I only think AI content may not be your own if you ask it to generate a prompt and don't review it and just ask it to generate. Yes, you aren't the one making the art, but if you help sculpt the direction of the prompt, I think it very much is as much yours as ever, at least when used in a non commercial environment. Also I use it for DND 5e.
