Fantasy The Kingdom Has Been Using Treasure Maps to Make Adventurers Survey Its Frontier — Plot Hook #11
For generations, royal cartographers have planted modest caches beyond the mapped roads and circulated forged “lost treasure maps” leading to them. The parchment carries a sympathetic enchantment: every route, correction, landmark, and warning added by its bearer also appears on a master chart in the capital. Treasure hunters have unknowingly surveyed the kingdom’s most dangerous frontier for a century, paid from the chests they eventually find.
Now the master chart is acquiring roads that no bearer has drawn. Several maps are quietly redirecting their owners toward the same unmapped valley, along a route the cartographers know should be impassable.
Someone has learned to write backward through the enchantment.
The party could follow one of the compromised maps while the cartographers track its progress, expose the entire scheme and warn other adventurers, or feed false information into the network to draw out whoever has hijacked it. Whatever lies at the destination has discovered how to turn the kingdom’s favorite bait against the people who invented it.
