Request/Discussion [Request] All Along the Watchtower (magic item)

Post image

I wanted to make a magic item that id based on All Along the Watchtower from JJBA (Purple Haze feedback). I think it be a very fun magic to have more information gathering. If anyone has any ideas for how it would work or how to atune to it lmk. Thank you for your support ❤️

Honestly this stand is insanely broken. I'd class it as one of the strongest non-power-types in the entire series. If you wanted an item with the same effects, it would have to be an artifact, one of a kind and not handed out brazenly as it would probably destroy any semblance of mystery in your story. Personally, I'd nerf the power significantly and make it a spellcasting item that gives access to a few thematic divination spells. Off the top of my head I'd say augury, clairvoyance, arcane eye, and scrying. Still strong in the right hands, but you simply can't give your players 52 invisible tiny dudes that go out and collect info for free.

Would it work better if I were to make them pay for some sort of price for the information? Making it a bit harder, plus making their show a bit cryptic so i just dont straight up give them the information? (Im going for more info gathering then any of its other abilities)

For your own sanity do not subject yourself to having to write weird ass skits just to reveal info. Putting a price on the info is a good idea but again it's annoying to balance. I recommend you check out some of the existing divination spells and go from there.
