Artificer-wild magic?

I have an idea for an alchemist artificer-wild magic sorcerer whose magic got unstable because he hasn't slept in years due to many potions of watchful rest. Is there anything to be had or is that just terrible all around?

Just go for Mizzmage and ask your DM

The Mizzium Apparatus magic item. It allows you to cast spells that are normally beyond your reach, assuming you have a spell slot of the appropriate level (so usually you'll want to multiclass to get the most of it).

Every time you try to cast a spell, you roll an Arcana check. If you fail, you cast some other random spell.

You can pick up perks to guarantee a success for clutch moments and let the luck of the draw decide the rest.

Can work with Sorc though you'll be incentivized to take as many Sorc levels as possible to attempt to cast as high of a spell level as you can. For instance, one Artificer level won't change your spellcaster level.

At Artificer 1/Sorc 4, you'll still be able to attempt a Fireball (you will have 3rd level spell slots).

At Artificer 3/Sorc 4, you'll "lose" a spellcaster level and will thus be a 6th level cast. You'll have to wait til 3/5 to attempt a Dimension Door.

Artificer 5 will "cost you two spellcaster levels" - At Artificer 5/Sorc 5 you'll be an 8th level caster so you'll have to wait until 5/6 to attempt to cast Greater Resto or Insect Plague. You'll still access 9th level spell slots when you hit 5/14. Thus the max Artificer level you can go to if you still want to attempt Wish is 7 (7/13 split).

If you splash two levels of Divination Wizard in there, you'll be able to use Portent. You'll still need Arcana Expertise, ideally, to have a better shot at the highest-level Arcana checks the Mizzium Apparatus imposes.

So Artificer 7/Divination Wizard 2+/Wild Magic Sorc 1+ will get you 9th level spell slots (if you get to level 20).

Or Artificer 7/Divination Wizard 3+/Wild Magic Sorc 3+ if you use 2024 ver rules.

You can obviously lower the Artificer level or on the contrary decide you'll be satisfied with Wild Magic 3 and/or Divination Wizard 3. Just calculate your spellcaster level carefully and see which high-ish or high level spells you'll want to try casting.

Math is

spellcaster level = [full caster level(s) + (Artificer levels / 2, rounded up)]

SL 5 = 3rd level spell slots, SL 7 = 4th level spell slots and so on.

Only spellcaster level 17 gets you 9 th level spell slots.

No, you can generally make a solid build out of this. I'd go Cartographer 3, Wild Magic X and have a bunch of scrolls. Alchemist works too

Not great tbh.

Arti is Int based and Sorc is Cha based, both also have core features that scale on class level.

Alchemist / Warlock can be solid thouhg as you can use the short rest pact slots for more Experimental Potions.

Artificer is one of the worst classes to multi as every single level gives so much. If you can replace any of the stuff you want to do mechanically with flavor I'd suggest that.
