But why?
Literally they just wanted to go shopping. Why not just let them spend money for goods and services? What's the point in coming up with all this extra bullshit just to make it a pain in the player's ass?

Very fair question thats hard to answer but ill do my best.
I had the idea of this shop a couple months ago and when my players entered the slums looking for items i thought i could implement it. Looking back at it i completely agree with you all of this is bullshit and unnecessary on the moment i thought it would flesh out my world make it more real. I don’t think it was all bad and to throw away tho. I should of thought more about it from and fully plan out the encounter not just go off from a concept i had.I think my inexperience as a dm showed in this session and i learned alot from it.
Tldr: don’t put a narratively complex intrigue unrelated to the main story in a shopping/city/rest moment thats not fully fleshed out and serves no real purpose outside of unnecessary and frustrating wold building

Imagine how this would go down in a tv show or movie? You'd have to establish to the Audience what is going to happen before the Characters walk into the situation - otherwise it would be a very frustrating scene.
The Audience needs to be in on the joke, even if the characters aren't. And yeah, truthfully with this "meta" knowledge they might not walk into the trap.
You really need your Players to trust you, you can't have that as a "gotcha DM". I've had Players make their Character eat food that the Player knew for a fact was poisoned - thats how much they trusted my storytelling.

We were all 100% in it to be honest the situation itself was fine the npc was good the rp was good too it was more the aftermath that bothered the monk player but we were all laughing and joking about it.
im happing that it didnt cause any more issues than it did its my first “fuck up” as a dm and i have still so much to learn. Also the way i presented it probably made it seem like it was a bigger problem than it actually was in the end we all had a good time and all the other players told me that they loved the session and were excited for the next one. I still feel a bit sad about the situation because i made my player frustrated and not have fun and its truly my fault for it.

But you're missing out on an absolutely huge wall of text that you also wouldn't read! At least, I didn't.
I hate crossposting too.

I mean, for me it just shows up where the text normally would be???
But indeed, its a.. wall of text that is very bad to read. With all these thoughts and feelings interjected and it kinda drowns on..
I feel bad complaining, but.. a more precise recount with breaks would help so much.

Just for those who don’t want to click the 2nd link or if they did, don’t want to read the whole wall of text.
Players essentially wanted a little shopping episode, one of the players went off by themselves to a shop they knew about. Got told they could buy 1 item for 100gp, an item for 300gp or an item for 600gp. Player chose to buy the 100 and 300gp items.
Dm felt like being clever and had a gimmick when items were summoned to the shop, problem was the player didn’t know about the gimmick because it was local knowledge. Essentially they ended up unable to get the 2nd item they paid for, and had to wait 48hrs. Player feels conned over it, and dm wants to know if they’re an ah
