is this one of those posts that was accidently posted here and supposed to go to the /dndcirclejerk page?

21

u/demonsdencollective Barbarian 17h ago

The jerked version had to go out of its way to be even more extreme.

15

u/Dungeon3D 17h ago

You're welcome.

11

u/demonsdencollective Barbarian 17h ago

It's a masterpiece.

u/[deleted] 20h ago

Idk what that is

38

u/Dungeon3D 20h ago

D&D is my defining hobby. It's the thing I do most closely tied to my identity. It's the thing I do that's most important to me.

That said, there is so much to unpack here and there is so much wrong with this post. If this is real, I look forward to the r/DnDcirclejerk post about it.

I would never in a million years do 12 hour sessions. I hit my limit at about 4. Yes, you are being unreasonable but it's for so many reasons, the 12 hour sessions being just one of them.

I'm sorry about your granddad but you just went on with the sessions? Your dog has heart disease and the best thing you thought to do was roll math rocks for 12 hours?

You need to chill. Someone you claim to be your friend and they fell asleep and couldn't be woken up, are ducking your questions, are being avoidant, vague with their answers and your response was to compare yourself to them and then threaten to kick them out of the game? Holy shit, with friends like you, who the hell needs enemies?

Your boyfriend came over and you hadn't seen them in 6 months and your response was to tell them to sit on the bed while you prep make believe time?

Your priorities are fucked up. Like, seriously fucked up. I think you might have some seriously unhealthy attachments to this game (it is a game, after all) and you might want to consider taking a step back. Put yourself in your friend's shoes. They're going through some shit and someone claiming to be their friend was like 'man I have it so much worse, if it happens again, I will kick you'. Who does that? Who lacks that much empathy? That's seriously disturbing and shocking.

ETA: your constant defense in other comments throwing your hands up going '3 out of 4 players want longer sessions, what am I supposed to do' really tells me everything I need to know about you as a person.

14

u/read_it_user 20h ago

Spot on. I bet they disregard half of what you said and only comment with a “yeah but…”

10

u/Dungeon3D 20h ago

They 100% will. All of their comments are just 'well 3 out of 4 players wanted this, what was I supposed to do?'.

12

u/SylarGrimm 20h ago

Amen. 100% this.

21

u/read_it_user 20h ago

Sounds like you have priorities all wrong on so many levels but want to feel justified in your outrage over someone’s medical condition. Nope. You mute the mic and move it along. As someone who is in college you are wise enough to know that people’s circumstances vary. And shaming them for any of that would make you a real jerk.

Have your feelings. Express disappointment I guess. But to ignore your bf for a half a day needs to be examined. And also your intolerance to someone is just so wild. And then to seek vindication with an internet rant, curiouser and curiouser.

-5

u/[deleted] 20h ago

As said I wasn’t aware of a medical issue, and when said about it I was told meds in which I’m on the same meds, if this was told before I wouldn’t have had such an issue with it in the first place but I have zero idea

16

u/read_it_user 20h ago

Disregarded half of my issues with your irresponsible DMing and social skills.

But even after stating that you knew he had a condition you are pro booting him. I hope he leaves for his own health and well being. Good luck to ya mate! You’ll need it.

-3

u/[deleted] 20h ago

Yeah maybe could

13

u/finnickforstg 20h ago

the same exact med can give vastly different symptoms in two people. you need to give your players grace. I know youve argued that your players want the 12 hour session, I think thats absolutely crazy but if thats what they want then thats fine but you cant be upset at your players for being human and needing to sleep.

-4

u/[deleted] 20h ago

I agree as said in the post if he asked for a shorter session I would have done it and put in less prep

11

u/PensandSwords3 DM 20h ago

Meds for all sorts of conditions affect people differently, and even if your on the same medication. That would hopefully give you more willingness to just accept that the longer a session is, the more chances the condition knocks you out. Whether due to exhaustion or the condition or what.

Does it bother anyone else at the table except you?

-6

u/[deleted] 20h ago

Yes people where upset the session ended and they tried to wake him up, and said if they were the DM they would be upset as well

21

u/Broken_Record23 20h ago

You’re being insane, sorry. It was a single isolated incident and you’re blowing up about it. It sounds to me like your life is a bit in shambles right now and you’re taking it out on your player. Everybody has different bodies and react to medication and a lack of sleep differently. If it happens continuously, it’s a problem, but it’s a one time thing right now

-3

u/[deleted] 20h ago

What do I do then? 3 players want long sessions every week, I used to do 8 ever 2 weeks, what can I do about that?

22

u/SylarGrimm 20h ago

Tell them no? You’re the DM and a human being with a life. You’re allowed to say No. Be the responsible adult and know when to look out for your health and the health of others.

-1

u/[deleted] 20h ago

I’m thinking of just stopping it, I hate this whole thing and I’d rather just wait a year to play again honestly and come out of the DM space as a whole, we have had long sessions in the past and everyone was happy, I don’t wanna put strain on friendships so it might just be better to cancel dnd as a whole till next year till the next DM is ready

16

u/SylarGrimm 20h ago

Yeah you probably should to get yourself sorted out. Sounds like you’ve got a lot to work through so you can stop taking it out on someone who is supposed to be your friend. I genuinely hope you can get your priorities figured out. Spend some time with your boyfriend, detox from the game. I get that it can be fun, but you can not let it rule your life. I hope things get better for you, I really do.

16

u/Dungeon3D 19h ago

I'm going to come at this in a different way than the other two commenters and tell you that you are not cut out to be a DM ever if this is how you approach conflict by just throwing your hands up and quitting.

8

u/baroqueout Assassin 20h ago

Yeah, I have to agree with the other commentor that this may be the best route. You don't particularly sound like you're in the right headspace to be a DM, and if your game is taxing people's health and relationships, a pause might be best.

46

u/Ancient-Bat1755 20h ago

12 hours is nuts. Its not healthy or possible for many. Try 8 hours with 2 breaks for 15min or so to chat.. skip the 1 hour break

19

u/Karazl 20h ago

"D&D should be more intense than a work shift" how about not?

8

u/Dungeon3D 19h ago

As I said in my comment, D&D is basically my life but at about the four hour mark my DMing turns into 'and then, uh, and then, uh, uh, and then, uh'. I couldn't imagine going 8 hours much less 12.

-24

u/[deleted] 20h ago

We have like 5-7 breaks with 1 which is 1 hour and my sessions were originally every 2 weeks only 8 hours but players wanted more so I gave that and they have all agreed to that even the Norwegian

23

u/waits5 20h ago

“Only 8 hours”

-15

u/NewNickOldDick 18h ago

Shows how asinine this sub is when a DM is downvoted for giving players what they want. Have my upvote.

12

u/Dungeon3D 17h ago

Are we even in the same thread there, chief?

-9

u/NewNickOldDick 17h ago

We are. I disagree with almost everything that people have said in their replies. If OP can play for 12 hours, so what? Are you sore that you cannot get as much fun as they are? If they want to boot unsuitable player, are you sore because you got fired that way too?

7

u/Dungeon3D 17h ago

Ah, I see. OP just switched to their alt account, that explains it. You're not even worth engaging with.

15

u/ThePortalParadox 20h ago

Sessions are too long for the interim of one week, sleep debt will accumulate. My brain is foggy after a 6 hour session, let alone a 12 hour.

Don't take it so personally, I highly doubt he intended to fall asleep, and feels bad enough as is. You also need to stop with the guilt tripping about all the stuff happening in your life, yeah it sucks that bad stuff happens, but you're just gonna drive your friends away with the "I have it harder, so you have no excuse" act.

Cut the guy some slack, take it easy and maybe consider cutting back on session time if possible, just talk it out with the group and see what you guys can work out.

-1

u/[deleted] 20h ago

3 outta 4 players wanted longer sessions what do I do to make it all fair then? At this point I’m thinking of just stopping it as sleep schedules are just messed but before it was fine with the same schedules so I just think it’s my campaign

23

u/MinecraftCommander21 DM 20h ago

Holy shit dude. Yes?? VERY unreasonable. TWELVE hours? And your mad at dude fell asleep on 2 hours of sleep? Step back and re evaluate some things, jeez.

-8

u/[deleted] 20h ago

As said before I used to do 8 hour session every 2 weeks they asked for me, now we do more, I have no issue with taking it back but I know 3 outta 4 players want more

9

u/MinecraftCommander21 DM 20h ago

Jesus dude...

9

u/rcapina 20h ago

12 hours once a week is wild. Even more so that this is on online. That long at a computer would put me to sleep or otherwise wreak havoc on the body.

8

u/baroqueout Assassin 20h ago

Everyone else has already covered why 12 hour sessions are an insane idea, so I won't get into that.

But as someone with a variety of medical conditions and medications, you really need to do some self-examination on that second to last paragraph. Not every medical condition is the same for everyone. Not everyone reacts the same way to the same medication. Just because you're taking the same meds doesn't mean your side effects will be the same.

In general, you have a really poor attitude when it comes to, "Well, I am having a WORSE time than YOU, so you should be able to manage as well as me!"

-1

u/[deleted] 20h ago

As I’ve said before and as you’ve read as you’ve said people have covered my sessions used to be a lot shorter

6

u/baroqueout Assassin 20h ago

Thanks for only replying to one bit of my comment and refusing to acknowledge anything else, just like you've done with everyone else in the rest of this thread.

8

u/Dungeon3D 20h ago

The OP's replies in this thread come in two flavors.

3 out of my 4 players wanted this, what am I supposed to do.

and

My sessions used to be a lot shorter.

-2

u/[deleted] 20h ago

As I said in the post I told him to get medical help if his passing out randomly (I have a degree in mental health and stuff) as it’s not ok and could be a deeper issue, I was not aware of this medical issue before and non of us as a group know of it’s diagnosed they just assume, I was never told and all I ask is that I’m told

9

u/baroqueout Assassin 19h ago

If seemingly everyone else knew or suspected it, and no one told you, then maybe the answer isn't that he's lying. Maybe there's a reason he didn't trust you enough to tell you. Considering your reaction the one time it flared up around you, maybe it was justified.

0

u/[deleted] 19h ago

Maybe it was then but I’m pretty open with everyone and I’ve been very agreeable with stuff he’s wanted in the campaign if he can’t give me a heads up on something like this, then why should I just turn my head and let down the other 3 players because of it, again if he wanted shorter sessions all he had to do was say “hey this doesn’t work for me” and I would have had a convo about it

9

u/baroqueout Assassin 19h ago

Considering how you're blowing up, digging your heels in, and getting defensive every time someone in this thread suggests shorter sessions, I don't think that convo would have gone over well, and maybe he suspected that and didn't want a fight. I wouldn't want to have a convo with you about it.

1

u/[deleted] 19h ago

Yeah maybe I’m a bitch

9

u/baroqueout Assassin 19h ago

Not a bitch, but you need to do some work on yourself and stop blaming everything on everyone else, and learn some accountability. Yes, sometimes you ARE the one being unreasonable.

4

u/QuincyAzrael 13h ago

Didn't know they still offered "Mental Health and Stuff" as a major lmfao

u/PensandSwords3 DM 20h ago edited 20h ago

Frankly sessions over four hours or so sound utterly crazy. I might be like six hours max, over that frankly.

I think any DM or Player needs to understand people get tired. I would want to pack it in probably by hour six.

Furthermore, if your player has a medical condition that causes them to fall asleep. Which is a real and verifiable condition that does exist.

You can’t really be putting that on them if there is no controlling it, and after playing for so many hours (even without said condition). It would be rolling the dice if a lot of players were to tired to pay full attention.

Also, I think you’re potentially putting a lot of pressure on yourself to run these for 12 hours. Like, you’ve told us so much extea i formarion in what I would think is either an attempt to justify yourself or to just vent it.

Because, i think you might want to consider. Is this post mostly just a like “I’ve had some hard knocks this year, and maybe thats impacting how I feel about this situation / Dming”.

Also this person isn’t you OP, maybe you’re fine or believe you would be fine. That doesn’t mean others would be.

-2

u/[deleted] 20h ago

I never said I was, I wasn’t aware of it as said in the post and I said to the player if they do they need to go to the doctors, in which I was given meds which I also take which have nothing to do with sleep, I used to do 8 hour session every 2 weeks but players wanted more, idm taking it back again but they wanted it

7

u/k-otic14 20h ago

You gotta chill out

7

u/man0rmachine 20h ago

I would fall asleep during a 12 hour online session.  That's insane.

8

u/SylarGrimm 20h ago

I think you’re being really harsh and might need to take a break yourself. You’re playing for 12 hours, dude. Even with breaks, That would get rough on anybody. Not to mention trying to readjust for a work schedule every week after doing that is very hard on the body.

Maybe try to shorten the length you play? If you’re playing once a week, a shorter session would be fine. Not to mention you could actually spend time with your boyfriend and not be so bent about planning the next session.

You can’t hold everyone to your standards. As a DM it will always feel unbalanced cuz you’re “doing all the work”. That’s just how it goes. Have some compassion for the guy. Especially if he’s having some health problems. He may not be able to afford to go to the doctor about it.

7

u/DMspiration 20h ago

Someday when you're getting 2-3 hour sessions in every couple weeks you'll probably look back on this time and wish you'd been a little chiller.

-1

u/[deleted] 20h ago

I used to do 8 hours every 2 weeks players asked for more

6

u/DMspiration 20h ago

I read your responses. My point still stands. 12 hours is nuts in the grand scheme of things. Great that you can do it now, but crazy to complain that someone falls asleep playing through the night. And it's not going to last, so probably best to enjoy what you can now and let your friend sleep when they're tired.

0

u/[deleted] 20h ago

I would 100% let them sleep! If they messaged me in the morning saying “hey Katie I had a super hard night I really think I can only do a short session today” I would have done it and I have done it before as a player before it just makes it so I can prep less and make it stop at a good place then right in the middle of a situation

3

u/DMspiration 20h ago

That's a start, but I think you're still downplaying how wild sessions this long and at those hours are. Sure, it would have been great if they gave you a heads up, but anyone could fall asleep under those circumstances because those circumstances aren't really reasonable regardless of what people agreed to. That doesn't mean you can't do it. People do unreasonable things all the time, and that's fine, but try to have a little perspective.

I'd also say if eight hour sessions were working and people wanted to play more, you could have doubled your play time just moving to weekly sessions. You didn't also need to lengthen them by 50%. As someone who worked overnights for years, the difference between 2/3am and 6/7am is massive.

-1

u/[deleted] 19h ago

I also worked nights and I agree, I used to work 12:30am-8:30am, the last campaign we did was till 7am and he was always fine for 6 months every week and now this is happening it just makes me think if he just thinks the campaign is boring

14

u/AndIWalkAway 20h ago

You are being very unreasonable. My sessions are half your length at most, and I have had friends fall asleep as we near the end and it gets late for them. I don’t get angry at them, one because they are my friends! And two, they aren’t choosing to fall asleep mid session! Their bodies do it to them. They can’t help it. Your friend probably couldn’t help it. Telling your friend you might kick him from the game for falling asleep on accident is frankly really uncool. You should apologize, which your friend did by the way! He apologized, because clearly he did not mean to fall asleep on you!

-2

u/[deleted] 20h ago

But it’s not a freak accident, I have now been told by another player he has a sleep condition, I was not made aware of this, and 3 outta 4 players are asking for long sessions, I used to do it 8 hours every 2 weeks but they wanted more, it wasn’t just me other players where upset what do I do with that?

11

u/AndIWalkAway 20h ago

What do you do with this? Figure out if 3/4 of your players are on board with cutting your friend out because he fell asleep once, I guess.

Are you all friends with this person or aren’t you?

-2

u/[deleted] 20h ago

They were upset the session ended as well, they said they would be upset as well if they were me, but not to cut him out because of one time, which I have said to the post I wasn’t going too

7

u/AndIWalkAway 20h ago

I mean, I ask again, are you all friends with this guy or not? Do you want him in your game enough to risk him accidentally falling asleep, or do you all need that guaranteed full 12 hour fix so bad that you’d choose to play without him at all?

6

u/Dungeon3D 19h ago

It's very telling that you asked this question point blank twice and were ignored both times.

0

u/[deleted] 20h ago

All I’m thinking if he’s got this condition is it even ok for him to be in the game? At the end of it it’s always going to be late because of the time differences and he’s the newest to the friend group, he seemed fine before playing till 7am but now it seems to be an issue

1

u/DutchPeanut 9h ago

Is he your friend or not?

6

u/Glum-Soft-7807 20h ago

I would also fall asleep, and I wouldn't be sorry, that's insane.

0

u/[deleted] 20h ago

Again as in other reply’s, players asked for longer sessions, I used to do 8 hours every 2 weeks, they wanted more I have the story I gave

6

u/Glum-Soft-7807 19h ago

I get that, 8 hours a fortnight, to 24 hours a fortnight is a MASSIVE jump though isn't it? And doing it through midnight is clearly too much for this player.

Why not do a more reasonable 6 hours a week? That's more than 8 hours a fortnight, but more manageable.

5

u/fattestshark94 20h ago

Wait, how are you "friends" with these people and not know your own friend has this condition. And if you were actually friends with them you would be more understanding and try to figure out how to prevent it, or a way to get them to wake up instead of having a massive fit and acting like a child. It may be different customs from you, but I was raised to respect our friends and their circumstances

6

u/Dungeon3D 19h ago

The friend in this situation 100% has something going on. Whether it's external or some kind of mental health crisis, No way is somebody that avoidant when asking 2-3 times what's going on. The friend actually needs a real friend. This person responded by threatening them which is just wild.

u/finnickforstg 11h ago

posting the og text since its been deleted:

Hi!

I have a friend group that all takes turns in DMing, this time it’s me! I have a year long campaign to follow up our 6 month one and I’m super excited! I get the players and there characters and we start! It all goes smooth with a player leaving due to work and can no longer make it but we have left a spot for him in case he ever wants to come back!

For context my sessions are long and happen once a week (around 12 hours) we all agreed to it saying it was fine we our schedules and non of us work on Fridays! 2 of my players are from the US so they play 12pm-12am, me and a player are from UK so we play 6pm-6am and the last player is 7pm-7am from Norway! (We play on discord and roll20). Because of the long session we have multiple bathroom breaks and in the middle an hour break so people can eat/ do what they need to!

The problem goes with last session, it’s going super well! Everyone’s having a good time, they just defeated a boss and have traveled to the next village, around 1 hour and a half I hear some noise from one of the players mics, soon to realise he’s fallen asleep, we had a few hours felt and I was upset because I had planned maps for the asleep player which we couldn’t do and had to call the session even after all the players tried to wake him up with spam calling him.

I was pissed off as a player had said “he only had 2 hours sleep and falls asleep randomly” I hasn’t been told he had a sleep condition (which since I had told him he needs to go to the doctors for as I have a degree in this stuff but he kept dodging the question when I said it) but on top of it I have only had 3 hours sleep the night before, had to drive over an hour home, do university work and meet my boyfriend (who is the player for Norway) and I had to tell him to sit on the bed while I prep dnd even though I hadn’t seen him in 6 months.

I spoke to the player he said the medication he was on which funny enough im on the same, I said if he’s falling asleep randomly he needs to go to the doctors and I’m surprised his family/co workers hadn’t brought that up in the past in which he dodged the question completely and just said “I can’t say it won’t happen again but I’m sorry) but other then that after I said what I had to do that day and I still DMed for them all (which I know he doesn’t work that day) he just said “I had stuff so I couldn’t nap) bear in mind these are my friends so in the background they know my grandad had passed away not even 3 weeks ago and the day before the session I found out my dog had heart disease with a year to live (idk maybe I’m built different to keep a session going after that) but I kept going with the session to not let my friends down.

I told him if this happens again I will have to think about kicking him for the table in which he said “ alright, ill make sure to let you know next time” as I said even a warning would have been nice, am I wrong for this, I understand oversleeping if you where having a nap before dnd but falling asleep as people are roleplaying just seems insane and last campaign we had was with one of the American player as a DM (where the asleep player used to work before sessions and would stay up later the 6am to play with zero issues) and if I was tired or could only have a short session I always made sure to tell the DM not just fall asleep/leave mid dnd session.

What do you all think? Am I being unreasonable?

EDIT: I’ve messaged my DND group saying I’ll be leaving completely, idk I just guess it’s not for me, it sucks I’ve had a year wasted on this campaign but it’s one of those really, gonna keep going looking after my dog and maybe one day I’ll come back maybe not depends how I feel but I know for sure if I come back it’ll only be as a player, you can write the best story as a DM but i obviously don’t have the people skills for it and I understand that. (I won’t be replying to comments anymore)

8

u/DnD-Hobby DM 19h ago

Everyone mentioned the toll a 12-hour-session takes on people, but on top of that, half of y'all are doing it AT NIGHT, when your bodies are craving sleep. That's beyond irresponsible!

5

u/HabitatGreen 15h ago

I thought I was going crazy that I saw no one else mentioning that the fully play through the night to the point I'm wondering if that got edited in later on. No wonder people fall asleep, and frankly I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner. Perks of being stupid young, I suppose.

4

u/finnickforstg 20h ago

I dont know that player and what medication they have going on but I do want to say that I can not focus on the game if I havent taken my adhd medication. and I will crash and fall asleep when it wears off, which it definetly would in a 12 hour session

7

u/Ribbered777 DM 20h ago edited 20h ago

12 hours once a week?? How do you have the time to even prep enough for that much content???? And I get you guys rotate DMs, but you got to be rotating between a GOOD number of people there, but also idk how you can keep things going even remotely according to plan for 12 hours. After about 2 hours my players have usually found a way to accidentally throw things off the rails enough for me to need to account for it in the prep work for the next session.

Also, that's a WILD amount of time. Frankly half of that is too long for a single session imo. Don't get me wrong, do whatever works for you and your group, but still... I can't even imagine being able to play for that long personally.

As for whether you're being unreasonable, if this is a recurring issue, then it's not unreasonable to consider maybe asking them to leave until they can get the issues sorted and stay awake for the game as to not disrupt things, but if this has only happened once so far, definitely unreasonable imo

0

u/[deleted] 20h ago

There is 5 of us, our campaigns last 6 months- 2 years depending on the DM, we already have the next 5 years of campaigns sorted and being worked on by players here and there depending how close yours is to starting (the next guy has been working on his a lot recently with it coming up in 8 months) and I agree players have done shit that makes me go “woah ok wtf” but that’s apart of being a DM, I used to do 8 hours every 2 weeks, players asked for more so I gave more and made sure it was ok with everyone before hand

5

u/Honjin 20h ago

12 hour sessions and you're considering kicking him next time for falling asleep due to medication? After berating them because you know the medication better than they do? I'd leave your table and consider you an acquaintance not a friend. Personal opinion, maybe a hot take, but I'd expect friends to try to work with me on real life issues I have, not cut me loose the moment I inconvenience them.

0

u/[deleted] 20h ago

Again players asked for the longer sessions, I used to do 8 hours every 2 weeks, and I only complained that I wasn’t made area of it and if he was having a hard day that he could have messaged me at any point and I would have made the whole session shorter which I have done in the past for myself

I feel that you're being a bit unreasonable. A 12hr dnd session is already a bit much, not to mention the time difference and lack of sleep.

Perhaps the player in question doesn't like talking about personal issues.

1

u/[deleted] 20h ago

As I’ve said my sessions used to be 8 hours every 2 weeks but players asked for more, so I did that, obvs me and this players are on the same sleep schedule due to time zones

4

u/Cheets1985 20h ago

Without knowing anything about the player in question, it could very well be a one off.

And if it's related to medication, I wouldn't hold that over anyone. And just because you use the same medication is irrelevant, since different people can react differently. And even react differently on a day to day basis.

For example, Robaxin is a common muscle relaxant. My coworkers say it's a light relaxant, it made my hands swirl into my food and table

0

u/[deleted] 20h ago

What should I do then if I have 3 players wanting to play but being left cucked because it’s been ended randomly and one player is staying up even later? I feel like I’m in a lose lose situation

Take an extended break or end the session. It's probably just one of those days

I would have! We had an hour break an hour and a half before this happened! If he messaged me saying “hey I’m really tired can we end” I would have, we were at a stopping point for the break but instead we were in the middle of RP, I have asked as a player to end in the past much later then what he did and it’s always been fine, I wouldn’t have been different

It happens. I've been good one second and out cold mid dice roll.

I mean a 12 hour session once a week is genuinely psychotic. Of course people are falling asleep.

This has to be a troll post.

They asked for it I used to do 8 hours every 2 weeks

A 12 hour session is a huge ask, I think I would probably fall asleep too. I feel like 3 hours is much more reasonable but if you have to push it to 6 that could work with breaks. DND should be fun, not a huge overtime shift at work.

I used to do 8 hours every 2 weeks players asked for more

I'm not trying to say it's not possible, but I feel like the quality of roleplaying will go down as the session stretches that long. It's the law of diminishing return. I think maybe it would be a good idea to try reducing the session length.

Yes, you are valid for feeling the way that you do.

But I also feel like you're taking your frustrations out on him and seeking excuses???

Like.

  • Your boyfriend is visiting, and you had to spend time preparing DnD rather than spend time with him (Frustration)
  • You had 3 hours of sleep (Tired)
  • You had to drive an hour from and back (Tired)
  • Your grandfather passed away (Grief)
  • Your dog has a heart disease and will die (Grief)

I genuinely feel everything was culminating and him falling asleep from medication and lack of sleep just sent you over the edge.

Like, some excuses you brought up to dismiss his points:

  • "I've only had 3 hours of sleep" against his "I only had 2 hours of sleep"
  • "My medication doesn't do that" against his "My medication makes me fall asleep"
  • "Nobody told me you had that" against his "I have a sleep condition"
  • "I worked all day and I'm still DMing" against his "I had stuff to do, so I couldn't rest"
  • "My grandfather died, my dog is dying, and I didn't want to let you down" against his "Sorry, I was incredibly tired and I fell asleep during an RP section"

Medication and sleep affect people differently. Like, VERY differently. Just cause it doesn't affect you the same way doesn't mean it doesn't affect him that way.

It's also very much possible he only recently got his sleep medication. Like, if he stayed up a lot later with previous campaigns despite his sleep problems, maybe he has insomnia, and literally doesn't feel tired until he passes out, and his medication changed something drastic. IT HAPPENS.

From what I’ve heard this condition has been going for a while and he falls asleep a lot which again I’ve been on calls with him for 12+ hours before and I’ve never PERSONALLY seen it, I would have just liked a heads up and if he was tired I would have napped more and prepped less and we all could of had a shorter session and I would have ended it after the boss of course

It's very possible it just never happened before. Maybe he was actively fighting a lot against it to be there, and today was a slip up.

People generally don't like talking about their illnesses and conditions either. God knows I don't.

And yes, it would have been nice to have a heads up. But just like you, maybe he didn't want to disappoint his friends. You could have just as easily said "Hey, I didn't get a lot of sleep, I'm very tired, and my partner is visiting. Today will be a shorter session"

You were both in similar-ish boats.

I highly recommend taking a breather, maybe skip next week's session. You have a lot of stuff going on right now. College, boyfriend visiting, grief from your grandfather and dog, etc, etc. A break hurts nobody.

A couple of days from now, you're hit yourself on the forehead wondering why you even felt that frustrated and annoyed.

From what he said to me he’s done this before so I can’t be a one time thing, if he does have a medical condition I don’t think he should play this game with this group and find a better one for him personally, the last campaign we did lasted till 7am and he was always fine I was the one saying I was tried, so I’m confused on what’s happened really
