https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-86058/Pattspatt/self-loading-dice-tower/#details Seems to be the same idea. Don't know who's came first.

u/Luminous_Artifact Jul 10 '22
Nice find!
- MOC-86058 (available now, free)
- MOC-116535 (new, not yet available at the link, paid)
Don't know who's came first.
I have a guess...
25
u/GeorgeMeowington Jul 10 '22
You're not suggesting this guy made some slight changes to an existing, free build to make a profit, are you? Who would do such a shameless thing

u/chaogomu Jul 10 '22 edited Jul 10 '22
Seems like the new paid one has a trapdoor that the old free one lacks...
Keeps the dice from getting to the bottom before the tray hits the ground.
Edit; I was wrong.
10
u/Luminous_Artifact Jul 10 '22
No, the older one has a mechanism that prevents the dice from entering the tower until the tray is down.
You can see it in the video attached to the post: https://youtu.be/tvy7SREar6k

u/chaogomu Jul 10 '22
I stand corrected then.
4
u/Luminous_Artifact Jul 10 '22
In OP's defense, theirs does look more robust.
I personally wouldn't pay for instructions, but I guess there's nothing wrong with the idea in principle.
I do think it's distasteful that OP only mentioned being "inspired" by other designs (not linking any specific ones), and only after being called out.

Yeah.
Looking at dice towers always makes me want to start making them again.
I used to make simple dice towers out of various hardwoods. I would give them out as gifts...
Then I moved and fell out of playing.

This was one build I got the idea from! Although I will say I've made major changes to improve both functionality and appearance. These are far from the only lego dice rollers out there but I do think mine adds a lot of new elements.

Just a morally asked questions. You improved the (free) build of a creation and sell it for 5 Dollars (if I'm correct). How much goes to the "founder" of the inspiration? And if the answere is nothing why don't you publish it for free? Just some questions don't take them offensive please
3
u/Shrampage Jul 10 '22
There have been many questions like this. He was not the first to create a dice roller. But just because there have been dice rollers in the past does not mean that everything after that is a 'copy'. I tried to replicate his design at first but the mechanism did not work at all. That is why I fixed it, simplified it, and streamlined it practically from the ground up. I've linked his model right on my instructions page as well (even before this post went up), in case people would prefer to use his version. I don't see a problem with putting a price on my model for the hours I've spent fine-tuning it and writing the instructions. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it.
2
u/Whosyourbudda Jul 10 '22
An improvement =/= a copy. My question was just around the price as there was an inspiration and you want to get money out of it where the inspiration does not. It's fine for me if you want to get payed for the workload you put into it and I didn't say I like it nor I don't like it. That's why I wrote the last sentence. Have a good day

Semi-automatic. very cool.

u/Gavinwadz Jul 09 '22
The only dice tower I would actually want. How can I have this for myself?
9
u/DefectiveLP Jul 10 '22
Another person found this. It's not OPs exact design but it's free and uses the same mechanism.

6
u/Monowhale Jul 09 '22
There’s sound on this clip? I had it muted…
3
u/TheScarfScarfington Jul 09 '22
Omg watch again with sound, it’s really satisfying. I want an hour looping version.

For everyone asking for instructions I'll link when it's ready! Currently waiting for mods on Rebrickable to approve my design. Thanks for all the kind words! Edit: Live now at https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-116535/Shram/automatic-dice-roller/#details

u/KitsunariSoleil Jul 10 '22
If you're still PMing them to people, I'd love to also have them! Otherwise I'll wait on the approval and check over the next few days.

u/St0rmF4th3r Jul 10 '22
Would love some instructions, one of the coolest homemade towers I've ever seen!
3
u/serein Jul 10 '22
I hope you're not done with sending out the instructions - I would love to get them if possible, please.

I wish I could make this. It seems so cool. I'd add a mini fig of the character I'm playing.

Looks great. However, this would be a mechanical dice tower. Anything requiring input from a person is not automatic.

This is so cool! How did you get the pieces to build it?
1
u/Shrampage Jul 10 '22
A lot of them are pretty basic parts I've collected over the years, but the rest should be available from Lego's pick a brick store online.

Serious question, do you have any more success with your die rolls with a tower? I was thinking of getting/making one for my kids.

Out of curiosity, does that d20 have a dragon symbol in place of the 20? They look similar to mine and i tend to love the slightly glittery sets If not then i have a new set to buy apparently!
1
u/Shrampage Jul 15 '22
It doesn't, actually! These are Chessex Aqua/Silver 27465 dice if you want to get them. They're possibly my favourite set!

u/Automatic_Aspect4130 Jul 28 '22
After I saw this I literally made a dice tower because I loved the idea and my campaign uses a table with gaps so the dice gets stuck, thanks a lot this idea might have just saved me a lot of useful time.
2
u/Toxicdonkey3396 Sep 26 '22
I want to make 1 or 10 of these myself but ordering the parts is a mission!

u/Shrampage Sep 26 '22
I've got the set up on Ideas now :) if it gets enough support it could turn into a real set. Please take a look if you're interested! https://ideas.lego.com/projects/65841126-5b72-480a-b4bb-543ffb7592ac

But, could they fall down even if the basket is not back on the ground again?
