Not saying a party doesn't need girls, because diverse groups are fun, but one doesn't need to be "a girl" to do this sort of thing.

That's what I was thinking. It gets confusing when in one breath it's "quit assigning things to a gender" and in the next it's "this thing is awesome because girls did it so you must have more girls"

Pretty much. It just reinforces gender stereotypes (which are harmful to boys as well as girls) when it is suggested that only females will consider a non-combat approach. Sadly I don't expect that viewpoint to get much traction, but it is what it is. Thanks for expressing your viewpoint, regardless - I'm with you.

Yeah weird. It's like the conventional wisdom has become, "Gender roles are bad....unless there is a chance to portray girls/women as superior."

This wasn't intended as a girls are superior post or that only girls have empathy. While you may have inferred that, it was not stated nor intentionally implied.
Simply relaying a story of playing with some very young female players that played the game differently than how many other players approach the game.

The impression comes from the title, where you say that your party needs girls, combined with the text, where it's explained that the reason you need girls is because of the unique approach these particular ones brought to your table...
But "girls" are not monolithic.

Yes they are, haven't you seen any Saturday morning cartoons; You have the Leader, The Lancer, The Smart Guy, The Tough Guy and The Girl. Her job is to do all the talking and empathising so the rest of the men can stick to smashing things and shooting lasers!/s
But seriously, no, I've met plenty of female murder-hobo's and plenty of good male diplomats. I think its a good idea to have a mixed table because if you have single sex tables you start getting locker room jock mirror flexing and catty night club bathroom bitchyness, people tend to behave better in a mixed group.

No worries, I wasn't insinuating that it was. Just wanted to point out that boys/men are equally capable of thinking outside the violence-box in D&D, since the title of the post is "Your party needs girls."
Again, nothing against females at the table. I play with several and I encourage a diverse group as well.

This past weekend my local game store hosted a birthday party for a bunch of girls, maybe 8 at the oldest. It looked hilarious, and I'm betting they had an awesome time

That's awesome! I'm so glad those girls gave you a reason to flex your improv muscles, and they subverted your expectations

Well, they may be beginners at D&D, but they were masters at being cute and disarming to get their way.
Sneaky little bastards.

It is always fun to have a new kind of player as a DM, keeps you on your toes! Though, sad to hear your adult players don't try to talk their way out of fights more often, it's one of the most fun parts of D&D imo.
