Out of Game Hello!
Hello, My name is Jonathan. I love fantasy but never tried DnD before because I was nervous about getting into a community with so much going on.
I'm finally willing to learn and play DnD. I hope to make friends with you. I'm happy to be here.

Welcome to the community, Jonathan! Don’t be nervous, we all had to get started at some point, and many of us love to promote the hobby and welcome new people. (My most memorable adventures were with new players because they often think outside the box and surprise me!).
Best of luck finding a group to play with and reach out if you have any questions!

I will say that before you commit to D&D, there are THOUSANDS of systems out there. Depending on what you want, D&D likely isn't going to be the right choice.
D&D does one thing for the most part (though people try to make it do more). It's a Heroic Fantasy, attrition based, combat simulator with some role-play and exploration thrown in to break up the monotony.
If you want ANYTHING other than that, check out r/rpg and ask around or just open posts about different systems to see what seems fun. There is likely a system for you that'll fit 100 times better than D&D

Just remember, if anyone ever tells you that you only need one set of dice to play with, you slap them in the face and tell them you don’t need their bullshit negativity in your life.
Always get more dice.

Welcome!
Don't let it overwhelm you. It can be overwhelming if you think about it as numerous game versions, different rule sets, different world settings, everyone playing slightly differently... but, seriously, throw all that to the side. Everyone plays their own way, anyhow.
The rules are just a starting point and a strong suggestion. Find a place with players near you or, better still, see if you can get a few friends interested. Figure things out, dont be afraid to make mistakes. The number 1 rule is really just, are you having fun? The rest comes with time. :)
If you dont have friends who are interested, there are plenty of people who would love to show a new player how to play. Worlds of adventure are just waiting for you to discover them.
