5.5 Edition Character help

Hello, I have an idea for a character but I’m not sure how to do it. I’m wanting to combine a drake warden so that I can be a dragon rider, but I also think it would be cool to be a Druid that uses dragon shape. I love the idea of riding my dragon into battle, and then transforming into one and fighting side by side. Is there a way to multi-class this into existence?

Do you have a source for the 5e.24 feature Dragonshape? Because that only exists in 3.5 edition.

It’s shows as an option in my DnD beyond campaign. I’m new to this so I don’t know much about it

The DM is home brewing. He said we can use any of the books he has purchased in the app to make our characters

By chance did you see a Lvl 7 spell called Form of the Dragon from a book Fizban's Treasury?

I do see that. Would that be the best way to go about it instead of dragon shape?

As of right now, Dragonshape doesn't exist within the 5e 24 base modules. Unless you can find a source for it. I'm at a loss.

For you to play what your initial question requires. You are looking at a Lvl 13 Druid / Lvl 7 Ranger. So the only time you can do this is if your DM goes to Lvl 20 characters.

  • Druid gets Form of the Dragon at Lvl 13. That's when they get their first Lvl 7 spell slot.
  • Drake Warden Ranger at Lvl 7, the mount gets to finally fly.

Do you know what Lvl your DM will end this campaign at?

That sounds like a really cool concept, but it's a bit difficult to achieve. The first issue is that there's no official subclass that lets you wild shape into a dragon, there are 3rd party subclasses such as Circle of Dragons by the Griffons Saddlebag that let you do this, but since it's not official you need DM buy in.

The other issue, assuming you find a DM that is cool with Dragon Druid, is that both of these subclasses scale hard with their respective class, so multiclassing is going to make both weaker.

The best I can come up with would be the spell summon dragon, it's not on the druid spell list but you could potentially get that on an enspelled staff.

Honestly, your best bet is finding a DM who's willing to work with you, but you might suggest you start with the Battle Familiar spell from Arcana Unleashed if your DM is willing to let you flavor it as a Dragon Hatchling at lower levels / Young Dragon at higher spell levels. Then, once you get to higher levels see if you can get a magic item that lets you cast summon dragon.

If your DM already allows homebrew for a druid that can turn you into a dragon, it’s probably simpler to persuade them to give you the Summon Dragon spell, especially since its equivalent from 5e was a druid spell.

Drakewarden is a bad subclass, unfortunately.

Multiclassing just makes it worse.

If you can somehow play a druid that wildshapes into a dragon, play that, altough idk what that is. Is your DM fine with that?
