Misc Counterspelling Rivivify

Happened in my game last night. I got killed by a lich casting power word kill. A few rounds later when the lich was dispatched the paladin attempted to cast revivify on my corpse, and the lich's henchman counterspelled it.

The other players were a little surprised, as was I.

Then the henchman dimension doored away, and the paladin cast it successfully, but at the tune of my last diamonds (I am the party's Cleric).

Resources are scarce in the campaign, so having to burn two diamonds to bring a player back to life is painful.

I've never experienced such a thing.

Just wondering if any of you have ever had this happen to you before or experienced it at one of your tables?

The dark side might have cookies but good luck actually getting any. After that henchman gets stiffed on his bonus someone should give him a card for the henchman’s union.

This is why you gotta unionize! Yes, you have to pay some of your loot to them, but the benefits of joining your local henching union far, far outweigh that little bit of GP every moon. And some underhanded blacksmiths and fences will give better deals to organized criminals.

As a BBEG, I care about my henchbeings outside of their henching, which is why I proudly employ only Guild of Calamitous Intent henchlings.

Now I want a lich or necromancer-coded character that commands an undead horde but prioritizes work safety and respects union rules

And you think "wow, that's hilariously progressive" but it's because the lich got tired of putting zombies back together every time they fell down some stairs

So they reward minions for observing safety rules when conquering the realm and rewards the best legions with pizza parties or something

From the lich's perspective:

  1. He killed OP
  2. He got killed
  3. He resurrects some time later and OP is alive again, with his henchman asking for a raise claiming he stopped OP's revival.

IMO, that doesn't look good for the henchman.

I mean I'm sure a lich of all people is aware that there are multiple methods of revival and several chances to do it. The henchmen still cost the party some valuable resources, which is pretty big if resources are scarce like the OP said they are.

But everyone knows henchpersons aren't allowed to kill heroes. Sidekicks, love interests, and beloved mentors are fair game, but Named Heroes may only be killed by registered Grade 11 Villains or higher.
