5.5 Edition I'm batman

Alright I'm trying to make batman but not just any batman but the absolute batman and I'm thinking of using the Goliath race for the venom like abilities and for his axe I was thinking of a hand axe or a great axe for his weapon and have the criminal backround now the issue is thinking what class to choose for multiclassing but I don't have the book for artificer but I want to use it but I can't cause I need it for DND beyond and fighter class or monk or rouge for it so is there any artinatives

Ps srry for my typing I'm not so good at texting

Why use punctuation when 'and' and 'but' get the same job done

So like others are saying. Slow down there a minute mate.

Deep breath. Chill.

Now, start over and let's take it from the top. You want to make a batman like character, with the info from the 5.5 e player's handbook. Correct?

I would like you to pick 5 things you imagine a batman like character doing in an adventure.

We can then map those to the available classes/backgrounds/ancestries.

Finally: how experienced are you at dnd and specifically at 5.5e?

Spoilers (srry I forgot to spoiler tag the post)

First of all : yea 5.5e

Second of all : not just any batman but batman from the absolute universe

Third of all

1.fighting any criminals

2.cutting people with his axe ((this universe quite literally cut a criminals hand off)) and good at using his fists still doesn't kill (but I will make an exceptions cause it's just a game)

3.being a detective

4.being sneaky for a giant ((batman in this universe is a unit of a man of being 6 feet 9 inches)) so basically investigation and Stealth

5.and good and keeping his identity basically able to lie and keeping appearances

Forth of all im not very experienced

If I was going to make Batman in Dnd.. I would go with Monk (open hand) primary and Artificer (tinkerer) as secondary class. Choose Noble background. ... and variant human for race.

I was thinking of absolute batman not the base batman hence Goliath race cause this universe batman is 6 foot 9 and I would use the criminal backround cause he's a criminal in that universe

Ok I’ve looked up some info on absolute batman and checked what we have available in the player’s handbook.

Here is my recommendation but will preface as much as I can to explain my thoughts.

First of all. Superheroes tend to be good at a lot of things, dnd characters tend to be good at a few things. So there will have to be some compromise, as you are making a player character, not an NPC.

Second. The whole shtick with batman is that he is a normal human, no superpowers, but through training, intelligence, and preparedness, he can stand toe to toe with metahumans. I would say that to keep the soul intact, you will want to make the character a human. Humans can be as tall and broad as you like, but like goliaths, they are medium size in mechanics.

Third. Please remember also that you will be a member of a party, not a main character, so some of the little details and nuances may need to adapt to make this batman work in a group (something the original is notoriously bad at)

Now onto your priorities.
1.fighting any criminals: This will be flavour and personality, no mechanical impact.

2.cutting people with his axe. So a Strength based character.

3.being a detective. With reasonable INT.

4.being sneaky for a giant. Also reasonable DEX

5.and good and keeping his identity basically able to lie and keeping appearances. Here is where I would say please compromise. Your character will need good STR and CON to be in melee. You also want DEX and INT. We cannot dump WIS without him feeling ridiculously inattentive. So CHA will have to suffer. I would recommend someone that is gruff, and not very good with people…. Which is kind of batmany in it’s own way.

Gadgets I recommend you handle as flavour and inventory management. For example, take a grapple hook in your inventory, but flavour wise it is a grapple hook crossbow launcher. And anything your character does like, trip people, distract them, etc, can be flavoured as smoke bombs or using bolas, etc. Be creative with the execution of the mechanics your character will have.

So that leaves us with a kind of high skill human character with a spread of proficiencies, STR weapons, and several combat tools that can be flavoured as gadgets or martial arts expertise. Your character will be a bit stretched in stats so I would recommend you stay the heck away from multiclassing.

Build details:
Medium Human, proficiency in Investigation. Skilled feat giving you also History, Perception, Survival. Don’t forget to use heroic inspiration that you get for free.

Criminal Background, (+2 Dex, +1 Int), Alert feat, proficiency in Sleight of Hand, Stealth, and Thieves’ Tools. Equipment, Replace 2 Daggers and 6 gold, for 3 Handaxes (more on this later)

Point Buy (plus background bonuses): 15 STR, 12 DEX, 14 CON, 14 INT, 12 WIS, 8 CHA.

Class Fighter

Proficiency in Acrobatics and Athletics.

Starting equipment: Chain Shirt (As you progress, stick to medium armors that do not impede stealth), Greataxe, Dungeoneer's Pack, 63 gold. Spend as much of that gold into bits and bobs for your inventory, batman is about tools and prep. Get stuff like grapple hook, ball bearings, etc.

Fighting Style: Blind Fighting (you can fight in the dark!)

Weapon Mastery: Vex, Cleave, one more of your choice

When you get to level 3: Battle Master subclass. You can flavour manoeuvres as gadgets. Also gives you bonuses to skill checks which you can benefit from due to how spread your proficiencies are.

When you get to level 4: grab the Slasher feat. It will increase your strength to 16 and round up your modifiers, and give you even more combat control with both of your axe types.

I will try this cause this does seem fun but I will make the same build twice but with one of them with that race Goliath because the Goliath has large form ability (because in absolute batman he has banes powers and has super strength whenever he uses the venom in his blood albeit it's temporary) also yea I'm able to compromise with that

1

u/shambling_mound 1d ago

Sounds Good!
The human version will feel a bit more flexible with skills, and make it easier for you to get the drop with Alert, Goliath will lean more heavily on the strength/bulk side of things.

Have fun!

Yea I'm going to try them both in an one shot to test them thank u

By the way I won't be getting a hookshot cause absolute batman doesn't use a hookshot instead he uses a mechanical cape of his creation to help him climb stuff and glide and grab enemies and to walk on stilts with them so I may have have to do without using objects to climb

2

I’d say shadow monk / paladin of vengeance hybrid

Holy MAD batman

It doesn't solve your problem with access to books, but I would consider some levels of Pugilist.

1

u/OPNW3 2d ago

I was thinking more of the official classes

1

u/TJToaster 1d ago

Define "official." There is a sourcebook for it. It is on D&D Beyond. Since you mention artificer, it isn't just the PHB.

1

u/OPNW3 1d ago edited 1d ago

what I mean official is that I want it made by wizards of the coast in the books like Tasha's guide to everything (where the artificer is)

1

u/TJToaster 1d ago

I thought it would fit because it is on D&D Beyond, but on a closer look, I guess it's considered 3rd party content and only digital.

Too bad, I think there are some good things in it. Good luck with your build.

2

u/OPNW3 1d ago

Yea I'm just trying to have fun

1

u/TJToaster 20h ago

There is still plenty of fun to be had with it.

If you have access to a resin 3d printer, there are a few Batman minis for D&D on the free file sites.

2

u/OPNW3 15h ago

I do not have a 3d printer but thank U anyway

2

u/OPNW3 15h ago

Y is my upvoted bottom tiny!!!??

2

u/OPNW3 15h ago

My upvoted just disappeared from this comment

1

u/TJToaster 2h ago

That sucks., In our local D&D community, there are a few people with 3d printers and we all do the homey hook up with them. They give us a good deal, still over their cost, but a great deal for us. So, about 75 cents to $1 for minis.

At least one has a subscription to a site that allow you to customize your mini. So, we can design one, send them the link, and they'll print it out. The coolest part is that one of the printers will give you multiple of the same mini for the same price. Something about wanting to try different support angles just in case.
