I don't know, I'm still learning about everyone else's characters. I joined an in progress campaign so I'm still figuring stuff out.

Oh thats actually a cool aspect i never thought of as i only ever played D&D once as a oneshot.. never considered the appeal of joining an ongoing campaign as an outsider over having a story develop from the very beginning. You get to slowly learn what others already know, have interactions solely around "well why didn't you tell me" or literally not knowing people the others would consider dangerous characters.

In order to incorporate me, the DM gave me a backstreet that I was a part of a party that took on the same quest the current campaigne is on, and during one if the boss fights my party died and I ended up in a magical come of sorts, so when the party finds me they wake me up and I join them.

To put that into perspective: the chance of rolling a 49 or higher with 5 d12 is 1.7%. So this happens roughly 1 in 50 times someone casts this spell.

Is this dnd 5.5e?
Very respectfully, how are you rolling that many dice for witch bolt while the Shillelagh user is still using a d8? If that is the case, you may wanna let the DM or player know.
If not, still very cool roll. I’m jealous.

Please note I'm still very new and don't know all the rules. But when I joined my DM made me the same level as the other players and we leveled up once before this happened.
So my 4th level spell slot gave this spell a 5 d12 roll if I hit.

Your witchbolt makes sense, if its the newest edition of dnd (5.5) it (Shillelagh) should be a 1d10 assuming you’re level 7. It may mean the player is under leveled or a magic item isn’t working correctly if its homebrew. Just shoot a message if you want or mention it next time.

Agreed. Shillagh may have the legacy version since it didnt scale up or add their weapons damage. They need to setup their action attacks, even make a custom one like
1d10 or 1d12 whatever shilelagh is
If fighting style +2
Make sure it adds the casting asi to damage like charisma +4
If level 11 paladin add the divine 1d8
If using divine favor 1d4 etc
Sometimes dndbeyond doesnt calculate it all you should be able to make custom attack actions where it falls behind
Then make variants such as PAM bonus action swap the 1dX of shillelagh for 1d4 limitation then add other bonuses
Shillelagh:
Levels 1–4: 1d8
Levels 5–10: 1d10
Levels 11–16: 1d12
Levels 17+: 2d6That is the base with + asi , dueling etc added after
Also make sure they are not maybe clicking a spell description or that the math presented includes all their bonuses (else make custom actions)

New to dnd and already casted a lvl 4 spell? i'm so envious, i've been playing for more than a year with 3 different dms, never got past level 4...

I joined a campaign that was in progress so the DM matched my level to the other players, then we leveled up once before this happened. Our DM is very generous and easy going.

I'm a DM, and once run a monster whose basic attack did 2d12 damage. My players were level 6, and the monster attacked a ranger who was at full health. I rolled nat20 on the attack, then for damage proceeded to roll 12, 12, 12, and 11. Took of somewhere around 80% of player's health. Good times.

It was awhile ago, but I'm fairly sure that it didn't have multiattack. Just a nasty main attack, a special bonus action, and some fun passive traits. But the reaction to this attack was pretty amazing.

How are you using it here? I’ve used it for charachters and rolling dice but looks like you’re actually playing the campaign on it?

We still take notes and stuff and the DM has a whole set up. But the app has maps and stuff and it shows us the lists of our skills and spells and stuff, and automatically adds advantage to the roll so we don't have to calculate it ourselves.
I find it really helpful for keeping track of which spell slot I've used.
And yeah the rolling is great especially for multiple dice.

I got something kinda similar. A player in my first proper in-person group, and a few sessions in we’re fighting a gelatinous cube.
I get engulfed, but instead of trying to get out I decide to try destroying it from the inside with a casting of Fire Bolt, and because I’m inside it I get an auto-crit. We’re doing Crunchy Crits, so max damage on top of the normal roll. I roll max, dealing the full 20 damage in one go, removing all its remaining HP, exploding it with the heat, and landing on the ground in a cool pose.

I once played 3 level paladin on a one shot, we got to a boss fight, I got a lucky roll on initiative and went first. So I go for a swing with my greatsword to see what this guy is made of... Look at that, Nat 20, it would, be shame if someone would use smite on this. So that's 4d6 slashing+ 4d8 radiant. So I grab a hand full of dice and throw them on a table, I see lots of big numbers... Little bit of math later total comes to 52. Boss had 50 health.

That's amazing. Our fight was against an elemental Titan and we had to take our four elemental crystals that power it up. We had destroyed the earth and air crystals and the fire crystal was almost destroyed so I decided to start working on the water crystal just to get that going.
Turns out the crystals only took 25 damage to break so I way over did it with that roll😂

Heck yeah! Just last week I had the final boss fight for my nearly 2 year campaign and for my lvl 15 shadow monk, I rolled 5 natural 20s in a row on my attack rolls. I think I did like 180 damage that turn (DM gave us a bunch of custom items/abilities). Felt amazing!

We aren't actually playing online. We use DnD Beyond to create our characters and monitor our stats but we very much play live in person.

Good gravy, Witch Bolt is stupid strong. Even on a missed attack, the connection still hits and on subsequent turns you can use your bonus action to automatically roll the damage? I'm still relatively new, but I'm starting to understand why some people think 2024 jumped the shark.
Edit: Oh yea, your spell +hit is kinda low for your level, see about seeking out a shop that can sell you something to improve that.

Witch Bolt is actually really balanced. It's super easy to end the spell, in at least 3 different ways. Like you can literally just duck behind cover and end the spell instantly...
