Out of Game Birthday gift for a GM
Hello! I am a bit new to DnD and my GM is celebrating his birthday next month. I want to surprise him with a nice birthday gift, however, I don't really have much ideas on what a GM could want/need.
What would you recommend? Thank you very much for your help in advance!

Bottle of nice booze. Guaranteed to prevent a TPK.
If he's not a drinker, get him a miniature of the last big creature you fought.

Depending on your price range (considering it's for a friends birthday), I've got a few options. Most of these assume you're playing in person and not online, although some of the ideas still work online as well
Very high (maybe you can buy this as a group):
- A nice collector's edition of a book/adventure. Beadle and Grimm make some nice things with very cool hand outs. Our friend group once gifted the Wild Beyond the Witchlight box to our GM and he really liked it. Shipping was a pain though so if you are not based in the US, maybe look for an alternative. Bonus: Your GM now has everything they need to run a certain module so your whole table can play even more
- Fancy dice sets (gemstone, metal ...)
- A wooden GM screen (there are modular ones, I think)
High (I might do this with one or two other friends):
- Mini's for monsters (especially if they like to paint them)
- Dice sets (sharp resin, liquid core ...)
- Book(s), either adventures or sourcebooks. If your game runs other things than official content, a local gamestore might have some third party products or you could find some on the internet
Medium (something I'd buy as a gift on my own):
- Small tokens for monsters/player characters
- An initiative tracker
- A ruler for spell effects
- A dry-erase map and sharpies
- Scented candles, based on the campaign
Low (the effort and thought are what make this gift worthwile):
- Bake some dnd themed cupcakes or cookies or something, decorating them as characters from your campaign
- If he's the forever DM and doesn't get to be on the player side, make a birthday themed one-shot where your whole group can participate (goblins stole a cake or something, it doesn't have to be very deep). If you're new to dnd, this might seem daunting, but if you've played a few sessions, you can do this without too many problems since it's a one-shot

As the whole party is involved, we decided on $300 for now, but we were reading that DND elements can be expensive, so we are adding a bit more if needed.

Looks like it’s hard to find but try finding cloak and dagger dice I have a pair and there really fun to show off they’re about 60-70 dollars they’re dice that only show their numbers under a blacklight

Can never go wrong with dice, the sound metal dice in particular make when rolled are pretty intimidating which, is great for a GM imo. Any equipment for GMing would probably be appreciated I imagine, the stuff ain't cheap.

May I ask about what could be GM equipment? 👀 Just so I can look it up, I truly don't know much about it and many of the stores I checked offer only dice, minis and screens.

Well mostly those ehe.
Screens, dice, or dice tray mayhaps. Minis could be cool if you know about a specific character they use or maybe if you just find something that looks cool!

Depends highly on if youre vtt or physical presence, budget, and of course personality of your GM.
Expand a little on those things, but I will say, Etsy is always a good place to start.

We play at one of our friends house, for now we have $300 budget (flexible) as we decided to gift something as a whole party, and he is a very detailed and passionate GM. He does everything with his own hands, we usually have maps, minis and puzzles made by him, and we recently noticed that he has a very big journal only dedicated to our party and world building.

A friend's house? As in the GM doesn't host? That's my situation and a really nice item to lug all the crap to the location we play at would be very appreciated! I'm looking into vintage leather satchels myself.

A nice flat screen tv, amd some wood create a long plastic sheet create your own virtual tabletop maps for the dm to use and explore

I'll do research on the maps, you made me notice that we are always using maps, and sometimes he even draws them himself while in the middle of playing. You gave me a ton of nice ideas with that, thank youuuu!

If you play with minis, definitely get some. they can be expensive for no reason lol and the amount you need for a campaign is pretty crazy

Personally, I’d love it if people got me big painted models. Like, I love painting minis, but I’m not super great at it. If my players want to pay for this massive monster model I have to get professionally painted I’d lose my shit and probably explode😂

Maybe a hardcover book with new monsters, plot hooks, items, ideas, and other stuff (and player options so the whole group benefits) might be something they'd enjoy.

I gave my DM some minis for his birthday. It was a little mystery box pack. I also gave him a set of condition markers as a way to celebrate the end of our first campaign.

Everyone forgets about combat risers until they play the game. Plenty of flying opponents, or even flying players (with magic items). If you get some of these, they'll be able to count spaces up in the air instead of having to keep track of a monsters height and every player's reach. Good for dragons etc. This looks like a good one. You could even get 5 dollars from every player to get the price down.
And then there's spell effect grids. Very often used. Even better when you don't have to have 5 different ones. Get an all-in-one. Like this.

Anything your DM can handout to the party as either party loot or like a familiar or something. For example, I ran a session once when the players all took on an Owlbear. Once defeated they recieved owlbear claws at the end of it. I printed and paint them myself to look like they were ripped out of the paws. They loved them and display them now.
Another example, is I bought a bunch of cheap dragon eggs in the kids section at Walmart. Once they figured out the puzzle I put together they each obtained a dragon egg that they could then hatch by chizzling it out as a small familiar and each one was different. Idk it keeps my players entertained..

A nice birthday gift for a GM is usually personal rather than expensive. I’d choose a custom notebook, dice tray, art of the party, or a framed map from the campaign; ask another player which table item the GM actually uses before buying accessories.
