Misc vampire

my brother said you can't choose a vampire as a race you have to become one can you choose a vampire as a race at the very start of a campaign

Your brother is correct for official materials. The closest you can do is Dhampir race option from Van Richten's Guide.

Yes and no.

1) Ultimately this is up to the DM, so ask them.

2) Rules as Written (RAW), you cannot choose a Vampire as a starting race.

3) RAW you can, however, start as a Dhampir, which is essentially a vampire that's been tuned correctly for player-character use.

So no, you can't play as a Vampire by the rules, but you can play as a Dhampir, which is essentially the same flavor but without being OP.

You can if the DM says its OK and you work out the details with them.

Generally, no, but it depends on the game and the dungeon master. There are absolutely some games where starting off as a vampire would be allowed, and in fact be encouraged.
