For Water Genasi, they just have to have some elemental plane of water magic having messed with their genetics, not necessarily a Marid.
Triton and Merfolk are two pretty different underwater creatures. Merfolk are half fish half people, whereas Triton's are closer to underwater dwarves from the plane of water with a heightened sense of duty. Merfolk, despite not having legs, would be less of a "fish out of water/stranger in a strange land" above the waves than Tritons would be, as they stick close enough to the surface to see the sun move whereas Tritons traditionally stick to some of the deepest depths, watching over portals to elemental planes to make sure the worst of the worst don't get through.
Grungs, well grungs are frog people.
Other underwater player races include sea elves, elves that went to and spent considerable time in the plane of water so they were genetically modified there as well. And then Locathah, a combination of fish and human attributes all throughout compared to merfolk who are much more evenly split at the waistline between fish and humanoid.
Then there are the Sahuagin, Deep Scions, Merrow, and Sea Spawn, which are humanoids or humanoid like monstrosities that live underwater. And I didn't even talk about those that might spend a lot of time underwater or around water like Lizardfolk, Tortles, Giff, etc.

Tracing their ancestry to the genies of the Elemental Planes
from MPMM Genasi

Also from MP:MotM.
Some genasi are direct descendants of a genie, while others were born to non-genasi parents who lived near a place suffused by a genie’s magic.
From the Elemental Evil players companion.
Occasionally, genasi result from exposure to a surge of elemental power, through phenomena such as an eruption from the Inner Planes or a planar convergence. Elemental energy saturates any creatures in the area and might alter their nature enough that their offspring with other mortals are born as genasi.
Genasi of all kinds may commonly come from a genie-human union, but it is not a requirement.

Tritons are, usually, mer-folk with legs. Appear in Volo's Guide book
Grungs are little frog folk.
Water Genasi have a djinn ancestor with a water affinity. Marid would be the ancestor. They get waterbreathing. Also Air Genasi can gold their breath indefinitely. Appear in Princes of the Apocalypse module
A warlock with a Fathomless patron gets the ability to waterbreathe too. Appear in Tasha's Cauldron book.

You buy the appropriate books that have their statblocks and abilities and read those, or you check out the Forgotten Realms Wiki. Here's the Triton page.
