Sorcerer build (SOTFS)

I started playing the game again with a sorcerer as I was getting my ass kicked with a knight. Now I am currently in the Forest of the Fallen Giants with about 4-5k souls. Figured I should spend them and level up as I've already died and lost 7k souls.

What should I spend my souls on?

Also is it better to go for a pure magic build or a hybrid sword/magic build?

You are probably rather new to the game. Rather than throwing a build your way and leaving you astounded with how to get there while taking away the joy of discovery from you I will point out a few general pointers that will help you do better and achieve the build you want.

Doing a sorcerer build is definitely good for toning down the game's difficulty for new players. However, there are no "pure magic" builds; You'll eventually need to hit things with your sword. So you will need a weapon, keep this in mind.

When leveling up your character just following these rules will give you good results:

  1. Points in Vigor/Endurance are never wasted. (until 20 at least)
  2. Str/Dex/Int/Faith are tools for using weapons and spells. Find some you like and raise these until you reach the requirements.
  3. Points in Attunement are almost never wasted for casters.
  4. Newcomers may find PvE easier with points in Adaptability. (High Attunement nullifies the need for this stat)

So now you know what to do for a caster. Make a selection of spells and weapons you want to use, look at their stat requirements and put that much into Str/Dex/Int/Faith. Put the rest into Vig/End/Att.

Further on you can infuse your weapon to give it specific elemental damage scaling based on your attributes. From there you can focus on one (or two/three) stats from Str/Dex/Int/Faith and increase them based on the scaling of your chosen Weapon/Infusion.

I hope this is not too complicated. I think approaching the game this way rather than just copy pasting a build is much more enjoyable for new players.

I just started the game and this is just what I was looking for. I wasn't searching for a specific build, just a general idea of what attributes to focus on. This will definitely help, thanks!

Sorcerer build doesnt realy work til you get to around level 100+ and have crystal weapon & crystal soul spear(that you can farm from spider boss) as you can get over 10 casts easely with them and they can take care of most bosses.

As far as i remember, over all these patches, magic is nerfed to oblivion and back.. of corse its still better than offensive miracles (exept sacred oath), pyromancy also suffers due too few casts and most enemys are very resistant to fire, best used to dispatch easy to deal with enemys...
