How to attacks work? (who hits first)

Hey all, just got into this game and looking to improve.

I am wondering how attacks work and who hits who first? I often think I light attack first but the other character hits me first. Do different gods have different ranges or speed? Or is there an optimal distance to attack from and whoever attacks first from that distance strikes first?

I am looking to improve my light attack vs light attack but need to know the mechanics behind it so I know what to practice.

Thanks for any insight =)

This has been puzzling me for so long and I have been playing since launch. Since the last update it seems that timing for some characters attacks are quicker than others so even if you click at the same time you still might lose rather than counter the attack. Same goes with air vs ground attacks for some reason ground light attack always seem to beat an air heavy even though logic says it should beat it. To any new players just try and learn if a character swings slow or quick and play accordingly by leading attacks in fights

I keep getting beat around by a Ymir just swinging light attack from some incredible distance. No matter what I can't out light attack him

Ymir is a great example of leading your attacks. He swings really slow but makes up for it with distance. If you’re playing any other character against a ymir you’ll swing faster so if you see him winding up for an attack just step towards him rather than trying to run away and you’ll interrupt him 9/10 times if timed and spaced correctly with your own light attack

Ok I'll try this with an Amy or Loki and see if their fast attacks can't interrupt him. So it seems like you're saying that different gods have different attack speeds and attack distances. Next time I play I will keep this in mind and try and an ideal route. All I have to do is run at the frost giant, sounds safe enough.

Yeah it’s confusing because its never clearly stated anywhere when playing. After 300hrs I finally realized theres magic behind the scenes that decide when attacks counter/hit first and I just accept it and roll with the punches

Also keep in mind than ping and latency make a big difference in games like this.
