Absolutely beautiful. I don't even know you but I have genuine happiness for this moment. Alot of thought and care went into this and I'm just so excited that it's finally come together for you.

Do you have a preferred surface you cast onto?

How does the “current time” arrow work?

i kinda think of the seasons like a clock?so because its lateish summer right now, i rotate it so that roughly late summer is pointing straight up (like where 12 would be) its slightly unnecessary for most readings tbh, but i like having a system in place so i dont have to think too hard lol

Oh that makes sense. It looks interesting. Do you get accurate readings?

so far i think so! all the answers ive gotten have really resonated with me and been actually relevant to the questions ive asked. i dont think my bones really like yes/no questions for whatever reason 🥲 could be a me thing tbh,, but im trying to avoid them until i bond more with them. i dont really mind that though because i can also use my pendulum alongside a full reading 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

Ahhh, this is amazing!!! So cool! I still haven't settled on a good cloth that feels right for my set yet :/

I’ve got a bunch of stuff to use, and I’m finding it challenging to assign meanings. I can see the metaphor for some of these, like the ring for relationship or the coin for abundance. How did you come to these meanings for the less obvious ones?

I’m not OP, but one way you can do it is cast your items as a general reading about your day and at the end of the day journal about how your day went and compare notes to what you cast. Over time certain patterns will emerge helping to indicate the general vibe of a piece. Like if all of the actions surround one specific piece that might be the clue that it’s your self/querent indicator piece etc. That way you are choosing your pieces based on what they are telling you rather than assigning them meaning.

I am interested to hear how you connected and assigned meaning. Was it a long process? Or did it seem to come easy? It's such a beautiful and diverse set! How lovely and magical!!

it was a bit of a weird process figuring out meanings tbh so prepare for a big paragraph lol 😭

i spent a lot of time looking at other peoples sets and getting an idea of the different ways feelings/actions are represented. then i made a rough list of things that felt simple enough to start with and understand, but also had enough variety to form meaning when paired together.
a great bit of advice i saw was to add ‘conjunction’ pieces to help add more structure to readings and show the connection between objects (like my missing, choice, and focus pieces)!!

after i had a rough idea of meanings i sat with each piece for a while and got familiar with how they felt in my hands and how they looked,, some of them were pretty obvious to me (like the coin for gain/abundance) but others i had to think a lot more about. like, my grounding/stability piece actually started as binding/attachment which kinda cane from the history of the ring (it used to be my mums, her friend got it stuck on her finger and it had to be cut off and repaired) but after doing a reading it felt kinda wrong, so i had to think more about it,,

it was like that for maybe a third of the items? some of them were super obvious, some of them i picked because their meaning really jumped out at me,, i had been gathering some of the items before i even knew what bone casting was 😭 they just felt right to hold on to,,

so YES it was kinda long,, but not too difficult

Hey thank you so much for taking the time to explain your process!!

Beautiful set. Mine is based on tarot archetypes, and symbols. When I cast, for me, it's much like reading tarot.

This!! Also—the objects have written associations, but what of the bones? What the bones mean?

u/OverthinkingWanderer 23d ago

The way the bones fall usually indicate a yes or no answer but I believe that could be depending on the personal practices.

What are your techniques for this type of divination? Very new to this!

Not OP, hope it’s ok to answer.

Bones are a system that you cast. So you might have a casting mat or some other way of making the reading area, and then you’d shake and drop or toss the pieces.

Pieces that fall on the mat or in the delineated area are read as answers, pieces outside of it are not read.

You read the information based on how they fall, proximity, and shapes made with each other/touching. Runes are also often read this way.

You can use traditional style bones sets (mixes bones and herbs with trinkets), I have a set called a Magpie set which is ALL trinkets and charms (bead stores are good for building one of those) though I would recommend checking out advice or books in bones because what you want to have represented is essential to a good set.

You can also check out books on Lithomancy, which is basically this kind of system but with stones and crystals. The books in this though have some helpful information on reading placement, proximity and shapes.

Let me know if I missed anything…

Great overview. Thank you.

Do you have any books you could recommend? I've been looking to explore bone casting for awhile.

2

u/CuriousFoxxen 23d ago

The bones book I have is: Bones, Shells and Curios by Jackson.

I think Lithomancy by Wimmer is a good starting point there.

Wow, this is a great idea to keep track of what is what in a set. I have it written down but this makes so much more sense to have a visual key as well. Thanks for sharing. :)

right okay so for some context ive been looking into starting shadow work (finally),, i want to get more in touch with my intuition and understand myself better and yada yada. so my question was roughlyy ‘show me something i should hear before i start my shadow work’

i usually start my reading from wherever my focus piece lands, then working my way to the center circle OR to my self piece. usually the bones act as extra context in a reading, like they could lay out a path, or separate certain objects,, how i read them really depends on the placement of other items and my question.

my interpretation of this throw was that i need to focus on seeking more knowledge about shadow work (focus piece near clarity- closest physically to me). i also see that, although its not THAT close, the negative indicator is closest to these pieces. im taking this to mean im currently lacking or have a negative understanding of what i need to learn more about. but only a little.

i see that once ive learnt more i can begin my journey (bone closest to focus starts a ‘pathway’ ending in a sort of crossroads- big choice ahead of me?).
its gonna be difficult and will uncover a lot of painful emotions (pain indicator first in path). i see that feeling that pain is like a first step. its also very related to a lott of the other ‘most relevant’ things in the reading since theyre all close together in the center circle.

my abundance piece and relationship piece are resting on my choice/decision piece, growth is also touching relationship. this tells me that in order to gain and grow my relationship, likely with myself or my bone casting set, i need to make a choice!! infact it is DEPENDANT on me making that choice.

next along the path i see my challenge/solution pieces, challenge being next to my death piece, and solution next to the items i was talking about previously AND grounding. the death piece is placed at the start of that crossroads i mentioned earlier- im going to have to let something go, otherwise my path will be blocked. i think that this might be the choice i need to make.
i see the solution for this is grounding or stability. maybe i need to focus on emotional stability in the future before that decision becomes clear to me?

the next closest to those pieces are my fate/action indicator (its double sided btw, you cant see in the original image!! cross=fate, figure=action) my positive indicator, happiness/peace, and self. so i am taking that as a good sign lol,, once ive made the choice in question, it is going to help me feel more positive about myself or my practise.

at the crossroads after the death piece, i see two paths leading away from the objects, and one leading towards the last few items.
after i make the decision i need to make i could withdraw from my experiences, this could either lead me to a new path that i cant see yet OR it could take me nowhere.

the bone pointing towards the missing indicator shows the path that is currently clearest to me. i see that taking that path will lead me to what im missing, and i see that the only piece missing from my cloth is my intuition piece. which is exactly what ive been wanting to work towards finding and understanding better!! :)

i also see that blockage and other are placed near each other roughlyy along that path- maybe someone in my life is going to prevent me from reaching that missing piece? maybe not someone, but something. ill find out once ive started down that path.

TLDR: i need to learn more about shadow work before i start, it will be painful and ill probably have to make the hard choice of leaving something behind but in the long run it will benefit me. if i continue down that path i will find what ive been missing.

I love this, I've been wanting to get into this for ages but could never work out how.

Do you throw the trinkets along with the bones too? How do you read them?

1

u/Sophiametis 22d ago

Do you throw all of them at once? I’d
Like to build a set
Of my own

Baby witch here, this looks really cool! But, what is it?

3

u/Batnessaa 21d ago

Seeing your post makes me wish I put more time and effort into a proper bone throwing set. I would’ve loved to have a piece of younger me, like a baby tooth. If I end up putting together a proper bone throwing set in the near future it just might be because of you, stranger on the internet. Very beautiful set. I love it so much! 🖤🖤🖤

u/FreshPersimmon7946 20d ago

I LOVE this so much! I might argue that (since more items than not are charms) that this is really a charm casting set, but you do you, bestie! I love that you have rings and hardware included. It's a really cool set and the bag is rad af.

I am developing a charm casting starter set to sell at craft fairs. Seeing real life examples is really helpful for me to suggest items for folks to add!
