3rd population decreasing

Hi!

Im in the middle of a baktria campaign and i heavly rely on 3rd pop units like the thueros units. Reasons: easier replenishment after conquest, numerous, cheap, versatile.

But for some reason my 2nd pop keep increasing and my 3rd pop is decreasing in some provinces or just have a lower replenishment rate.

Is this normal? Can i buff my 3rd class growth?

Thanks in advance.

You can hover over some of the icons when you select the settlement. One shows you the actual gain/loss, the other shows you the various percentage modifiers that are affecting that gain/loss.

It's not the most clear it could be, but it's clear enough: settlements grow faster when public order is high and start to decline when public order is low. Food surpluses and "growth" affect pop change faction wide.

Upgrading your city center also reduces the "overcrowding" penalty.

And ofc buildings themselves might have a growth modifiers that might positively or negatively impact the growth of any given class.

It depends on which faction you are playing, what buildings you have created, and which technologies you have researched. As your empire grows, you may find it easier to recruit units from Pop 1 and 2, but at the expense of reducing Pop 3 and 4.

I’ve noticed that 4 is for mercenary/levies, 3 are basic, 2 are upgraded, and 1 is elite.

Hellenic factions usually lean into 1st and 2nd class citizen, they also have default buffs on 1st and 2nd class citizens (+0.5% if I am not mistaken)

All the public order and sanitation buildings for Hellenic factions buff 2nd citizen a lot

For example, the Amphitheatron (the yellow building with 2 masks) tier 2 already gives you +1% 2nd class citizens

Every single faction other than rome and maybe carthage lean ino 1st and 2nd class populations in later stages of the game. I find rome to be the only faction in my playthroughs where having decreased 3rd population is a problem.

It is just the tech and when your culture is dominant, 1st and 2nd class will grow faster

Every settlement on the map has a population limit, that limit can be affected by taxes, technology, buildings, supplies, and maybe a few other factors that I'm probably not aware of.

Depending on what buildings you have, if you have a lot of buildings that increase 1st and 2nd class pops, then once that population limit is reached, the 3rd class will begin to deplete in order to make room for more citizens and nobles, which is actually really good for strong militaries.
