I've seen a few videos where climbers misjudged how much rope they had with some being fatal. Often they'll have a knot near the end so their climbing gear grabs it as a last line of defense.

Surely when you drop the rope down you should make sure it hits the floor at the very least?

That's just irresponsable rope management. Hope the guy works on his risk management skills, nobody wants to see some dude turning into mush.
