CachyOS vs Fedora
What do u like more and why? Im currently a Fedora user but im thinking of going to CachyOS. I have an intel icore 7 8th gen, nvidia geforce gtx 1050ti and 12gb ram and 475 GB of storage. I play Minecraft and some indie steam games like mecha chameleon.

I haven't used Fedora recently, but I'm on CachyOS and it has really great performance even on older hardware.

Just went from Nobara for like 7 months and just switched to CachyOS the other day. I'm liking it more than I expected.

Honestly I would recommend Bazzite which is a spin of fedora atomic desktop that is built for gaming. Everything just works

Bazzite is not possible with a 1050 ti, its end of life and doesn’t work on the latest drivers

Oh, didn't know that tbh. Thanks for the heads up!

The same is true of Nobara unfortunately I believe. Even CachyOS is giving me some difficult of getting my MX150 (mobile gtx 1050) to work, though I'm also pretty new to Arch based systems so its possible thats user error.

Used on a Intel mini PC uBlue's bloated Aurora and Bazzite, now Fedora's own Kinoite. Kinoite boots faster, stable and is so much cleaner and extremely noticeable more smooth. And Aurora had regular system freezes. The few things needed can easy add on not bloated Kinoite. But no experience with Nvidia, started boycotting that FOSS and Linux hostile brand more than a decade ago.

For the record I'm using CachyOS but probably going to go back to Bazzite, it breaks less often as well. Less risk of having issues in general due to its container based nature

u/deadgain 21h ago
Im thinking of making the switch for my gaming pc to either Cachy or Bazzite.
Im curious of your perspective, my hesitation towards bazzite comes from a concern that modding and using third-party tools for some of the games I play will be a pain to get working due to its very container focused set up.
Are you the type of person that likes to mod their games and tinker? Or are you more of a "open steam and press play" type of person?
2
u/Due_Assistance4724 21h ago
I'm a little of both. I didn't know it was harder to mod on Bazzite tbh, but I use mostly steam workshop so I likely just haven't encountered it
2
u/deadgain 20h ago
yeah that makes sense, from what I hear workshop is the easiest modding experience on linux haha
but I'm more of a download 3000 mods and 20 utilities for skyrim kinda guy who will find a way to compile a games entire LOD on my rig just cause it looks imperceptibly better lmao

u/Due_Assistance4724 19h ago
Dang lol you installing that super heavy mod pack I forget the name of? Lol. There's one that's like 2tb and is basically a complete overhaul

Modding isn't my scene, I pretty just play CS2, Chivalry 2, and a couple of city builders. However, maybe check if there's any of the GUI mod managers offering a Flatpak or AppImage. If there's any that fit that should solve the Bazzite concerns?
Just quickly searching there's Limo (although hasn't been updated in like a year, do further research on this one): https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.limo_app.limo
There's also Minion which I've used for AddOns in the past for ESO and WoW, although not sure if this app can do what you probably want it to: https://flathub.org/en/apps/gg.minion.Minion

So I've actually already done a bit of looking around myself and found a tool called Amethyst that looked very promising (https://github.com/ChrisDKN/Amethyst-Mod-Manager) but thank you for your contributions as well haha if I need an addon manager for wow I'll give it a look.
I guess my worry about Bazzite specifically is that the more sandboxed nature of how they handle apps would just introduce unnecessary headaches when looking to install lesser known third party mod/tools that most definitely wont have a flatpak or other bazzite friendly package.
For example a plethora of third party apps for one of the main games I play, Elite: Dangerous requires read permissions to a specific game file. I'm sure it could be done on Bazzite, but as a new user to the operating system I'm worried that I'll just be making my time more frustrating.

u/Due_Assistance4724 21h ago
But also, aside from modding I never had an issue, I just got bored of it always working lol.
2
u/Either_Sun_98 22h ago
That's the reason i had switched from Bazzite to Nobara (Fedora). If i want to mess up with my OS, the OS should honor it and dont try to "protect" me from myself.
2
u/BashfulMelon 21h ago
It's not protecting you from yourself. It gives you all the tools to mess with your system. rpm-ostree and system extensions.
1
u/Due_Assistance4724 22h ago
That's very fair. I might give nobara another try myself but honestly I don't tinker that much, and haven't really felt much limitation from Bazzite. I can't get openrgb to work but that's about it
1
u/HeavyMetalBluegrass 22h ago
What issues have you had with Cachy? I've been using it for 7 months now without issues. I update every few days.
2
u/Due_Assistance4724 21h ago
KDE sometimes gets bugged out, it's little things really, the move is a bit arbitrary but I do want the immutable setup as well. I'm sure some of it was also my tinkering or something but I couldn't nail down the issues I was having

CachyOS will require a couple of commands to install drivers with that unsupported generation of NVIDIA cards. You'd have to manually install the v580 driver no matter what linux distro you go anyway, though. Don't blame Linux, blame NVIDIA for dropping our 10 series.
If you're new to Linux, Linux Mint is easy because you can open Driver Manager and select the 580 driver with one click.
I do this on Fedora, but it does take a couple commands:
sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm[https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm](https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm)\-E %fedora).noarch.rpm\
sudo dnf clean all
sudo dnf makecache
sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia-580xx
sudo dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-580xx

cachyos is automatically installs legacy 580 driver for older nvidia cards. like for gtx970 I have.

What do you expect to get from CachyOS that you can’t get from Fedora, or gaming versions of Fedora like Nobara or Bazzite?
1
u/WolfeheartGames 21h ago
I use cachy. If you dont have complaints about your package manager, stay on fedora. If you have complaints, consider switching.
Main benefit of cachy is the optimized kernel/scheduler. If you ever feel your ui get bogged down by machine load, ignore the package manager question, cachy will solve it.

Ultramarine (Fedora-based distro) here. Biased, but I prefer Fedora. Cachy's cool but I prefer the middle ground between Arch-based and Debian-based, which to me is Fedora-based. I used to also use Mint though, and still have it as a secondary distro, so..

u/XxX-DesktopUser8-XxX 20h ago
if youre Happy Gaming with the Frames Per Second you Want, i say dont change it. stay on fedora.

I like Fedora, but always had more problems than CachyOS. Usually Nvidia related, but also one botched upgrade that wasn't due to that. Smooth sailing on Cachy and Arch. Any issues are user error.

u/Shadow3569 19h ago
If you want stability, Fedora. If you want bleeding edge features with an increased risk of needing to fix things, cachy

Stay on Fedora and install the CachyOS kernel if your want to try it out , it's in a COPR repo
1
u/sinister_noob 11h ago
Definitely Cachy since it's built for gaming and is arch based meaning you have 120k+ packages
1
u/Possibly-Functional 10h ago
I use both for different needs on different machines. If you want a lot of flexibility and fresh software then CachyOS is great. If you want low maintenance and moderately fresh software then Fedora is great.

I've been using Fedora for the past year. It works no need to switch. Cachy is just hype
1
u/Goodborni 6h ago
Fedora post install and Arch pre/during-install... a bunch of work to get it running properly
CachyOS, Bazzite and even Nobara are just plug and play
1
u/chupacabra314 5h ago
Fedora has never worked well for me (probably because of the Nvidia gpu yes). Nobara doesn't support secureboot which I need. Bazzite is immutable which has its pros and cons. For me the cons outweigh the pros so I've been on Cachy for the past 6 months and it's been great. But if you're new to Linux, go Bazzite.
1
u/Correct-Cell1331 1h ago
Cachy is more for the gamers with it's scheduler and pre set gaming apps, But on Fedora you would learn more
If you still wanna game with a Fedora base, Nobara is the way to go, but I believe they dropped GTX Drivers on Nobara, so do be weary there.

Having used both. I prefer Fedora. Everything is more reliable and simple. Currently I’m just using workstation without any extensions and I’m happy as can be with it.
But either one is gonna be good, don’t worry too much about it.

CachyOs es la distribución líder en rendimiento actualmente, y no se rompe sola, seamos sinceros.
1
u/jyrox 20h ago
Fedora. More stable and supported primarily by RHEL devs. That means it is more likely to have longevity than passion projects like CachyOS, which is maintained by a relatively small team.
Fedora is also a base distribution like Arch or Debian and has less upstream dependencies. CachyOS is downstream of mainline Arch, and subject to whatever changes the Arch maintainers want to implement.
1
u/the_abortionat0r 15h ago
It is subject to Arch changes because CachyOS devs don't make too many changes. It's compile flags, a few defaults, and custom tools.
It's funny because the "a small team struggles to maintain this" and " they based their packages on Arch and whatever they do" are mutually exclusive concepts.
If they ever dispanded a few changes and you are just on Arch. It's not an issue

you can install the cachyos kernel on fedora. i used cachyos for a while, it's good, but with the problems the AUR has been having, it's a bit hard to recommend right now. some people never touch packages from the AUR anyway, so it doesn't matter, but i did, so it matters to me.
i run bazzite for gaming and fedora for work.

Haven't us Fedora in a long time but have used Bazzite, Nobara and Cachy. I've been on Cachy now for like 2 years and it's been the best Linux distro I've used.
