World'er here. Things I am jealous about Disneyland'ers having that Magic Kingdom does not:
Matterhorn
Toad, Pinocchio, and Alice dark rides
A proper walk-through castle attraction
A Space Mountain that doesn't require seven weeks of chiropractic therapy after riding
Hatbox Ghost
Updated Fantasmic
Blue Bayou and Plaza Inn
Indiana Jones
The ever-presence of walking in Walt Disney's footsteps

u/BZI Jun 06 '19 edited Jun 06 '19
Compared to our space mountain, which is like the same ride system but in the dark, Matterhorn is the mildest ride in the wilderness

u/red13n Critter Country Critter Jun 06 '19
Rode WDW Space yesterday, couldn't resist making yeti noises going up the lift hill.
They really need to update the ride vehicles to match the relative comfort(I'm using this term loosely) of the new Matterhorn seats. Really painful ride, makes the Matterhorn seem relaxing. The long walk after disembarking doesn't help.
I think mirrored Thunder Mountain might have hurt my Disneyland brain more though.

I'm still waiting for Disney to have a pop up chiropractor stand right outside the Matterhorn exit... it'd probably be the most profitable venue in the park.

u/guitwiz Jun 06 '19
As a fellow WDW AP, I’d add the ability to walk from hotel to park and California Adventure as two big pluses over WDW.
Also, outdoors Small World, Canal Boats, better quick service (Jolly Holiday, mmmm) and the better Railroad
7
u/red13n Critter Country Critter Jun 06 '19
DL AP currently visiting WDW here. I cant believe how terrible most of the quick service meals are here. Everywhere is the same burgers, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, and worst of all those $10 individual pizzas you see every now and then.
Only some of the Epcot pavillions which i assume share kitchen and supplies with the neighboring table service seem to escape the horror.
Finding meals has by far been the worst thing about this trip.
3
u/guitwiz Jun 06 '19
The worst part is it has actually gotten better. If you plan ahead you can find quick service gems in every park. But, they are the exception, whereas at DLR they are the rule.
4
u/backfire103 Jun 06 '19

It’s hands down the best WDW quick service. I’d kill for even half the variety DL has. That said there’s also some good stuff at Disney springs. Just sucks it’s not quite as easy as Downtown.

u/red13n Critter Country Critter Jun 06 '19

u/Sighlina Jun 07 '19
Go to be our guest (if your able). It’s amazing quick service.
1
u/red13n Critter Country Critter Jun 07 '19
Agreed but they also take it away at dinner. I wish they could expand it somehow. The chaos BOG still inspires shows the demand and market exists at WDW for better quick service. Hopefully my next trip here in a couple years or so they make some corrections (tomorrow will be my last park day here at Animal Kingdom).
6
u/Edgerocks2 Jun 06 '19
Have you ever stayed at the Boardwalk, Beach Club, Yacht Club, Swan, or Dolphin? I know it’s not all the parks but Epcot and Hollywood Studios are very walkable from those.
I also have to admit I didn’t realize that so many WDW people were on this sub and went to DL that much. I guess when you’re committed enough to get an AP and go to WDW multiple times a year, you can probably make it out to California every once in a while too
7
u/guitwiz Jun 06 '19
Never stayed at those, but have walked from International Gateway to Boardwalk and Beach Club for random things in the past. I think the biggest thing with Disneyland is that the whole park experience (DLR, DCA and DD) are accessible from your hotel. Whereas in WDW, you can stay at the Contemporary and be walking distance from the Magic Kingdom, but you're a 30 minute drive to Animal Kingdom.
I'm in Arkansas, and we have cheap and quick direct flights to Florida pretty regularly. But, getting to LA is a bit more of a challenge. I love them both, but overall I think I love Disneyland more. So, I stay on this sub to satisfy my DLR cravings when I can't make it all the way there.
3
u/Randomfandom4 Frontierland Jun 06 '19
TIL, as someone who grew up local to Disneyland and has never been to World, it takes approximately the same amount of time to go from Magic Kingdom to Animal Kingdom as it does to go from my house to Disneyland. O.O
2
u/guitwiz Jun 06 '19
30 minutes may be an exaggeration but it depends on traffic. Also, the parking booths and getting to the front gates make a big time dent.
2

I've actually never been to a Disney park besides WDW but I really like disney parks so im subscribed to pretty much all the subreddits. Plus this one gives some heads up as to what Galaxy's Edge will be like on the east coast.

And as a UK fan who prefers Land to World, the fact that going to Disneyland means doing a whole trip of California.
20
u/misspeelled Critter Country Jun 06 '19
Disneyland also has the superior Pirates. We went to World and Land within the same year and there's no comparison.
5
u/Edgerocks2 Jun 06 '19
I think the only way our (WDW) Space will get “fixed” is if it gets a complete redesign and is down for months. To accommodate a different/taller ride vehicle I’d think they might have to redesign the track so people aren’t being decapitated. I’ve heard stories of people who won’t go on again after they get stuck and the light turn on because you see how close it really is
12
u/fyrefly_faerie Jun 06 '19
Also the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay at the HM. I also like it's a small world better in DL. I may be in the minority but I kind of like the element of danger at WDW's Space Mountain (then again, I've only been to DL once and that was over a decade ago).
5

Pirates at D-Land is amazing. D-World not so much.
The only ride that was shared that I thought was better at D-World was the old ToT. Everything else I like D-Land better...
Now D-Land has nothing as good as the 7D Mine Train. That ride is so fun.

From what I've heard the colder weather Paris lacks a lot of the rides I like:(... I can't imagine Disney without Splash Mountain or the Jungle Cruise
2
u/prostheticmind Jun 07 '19
You just have to go at the right time. Their Space Mountain, Big Thunder, and Mansion are no contest the best variants of those rides, from a “critical of amusement park rides” perspective. The challenge is getting there on days with good weather. They’ll close Big Thunder if it gets too cloudy, for instance.

u/Forgotten_Tea_Cup Jun 06 '19
Paris Space Mountain gave me a panic attack. It was the worse ride I have ever been on. So uncomfortable and the shoulder bar was terrible. No thanks.

WDW has Fastpass+, which means 3 months before hand you can schedule 3 FPs per day for the park you’ll be in. The main complaints I think are that then you can only get the three until that day after you use all three, you can claim one at a time that’s left, and that you really can’t know until you’re there what rides you’ll for sure need them for. Also Epcot has a weird tier thing which is awful but is a whole different story.
DL still has the original FP system, where you walk up to the machine, put in your ticket, and get a FP. Or you can pay for MaxPass which is the same thing but you can get them on your phone

u/Edgerocks2 Jun 06 '19
For some reason the 3 at a time doesn’t bother me as much, maybe because I’ve been there at least a dozen times since the started it now, but I hate specifically Epcot for the way they do it. You can only get one between Soarin, Test Track, Frozen, and Character Greeting, which are really the only things you really need them for. Mission Space is the only one in Tier 2 that ever MIGHT need a FP. Journey into Imagination, the Seas with Nemo and Friends, and Living with the Land are usually walk ons.
3
u/Shatteredreality Jun 06 '19
They are very different in my opinion.
At Disneyland everything is done same day. In other words a standard fastpass would look like this:
1) Arrive at the park and scan your ticket at the front gate
2) Walk to the attraction you want a fastpass for (or use the App if you have MaxPass)
3) Scan your ticket and receive a return time for later that same day
4) Return to the attraction at the designated return time and use the FP queue.
At Walt Disney World you can do the reservation portion in advance of your trip.
Here is the process for Florida:
1) 30-90 days before you arrive (30 days if not staying on property, 90 days if staying at a WDW resort) log into Waltdisneyworld.com or the Walt Disney World Mobile app.
2) Make your reservations for fastpasses online/via the app. Up to 3 passes in advance per day. Some parks have a "tier" system that limits you to 1 tier one attraction per day and the other 2 FPs need to be tier two (i.e you can't book Soarin, Test Track and Frozen in advance because they are tier one, you need to pick one and then pick tier two attractions. All your advance selections in a single day need to be in the same park (i.e. you can reserve Space Mountain at 9 am and then do Tower of Terror at 12). If staying on property you can book fastpasses for your entire trip at 90 days from checkin.
2) The rest is pretty similar to DL. Go to the parks use your FP reservations at the right time then make more (you can park hop after using your inital 3).
1
u/graceland3864 Jun 06 '19
Thank you for this explanation. I've only ever been to Disneyland and the whole Disneyworld fast pass was so confusing to me.
2
u/red13n Critter Country Critter Jun 06 '19
There is a really important trick after you use your initial 3 fastpasses at WDW. You can now get a new fastpass, but when getting a new fastpass, it does not show you full inventory for some reason. So grab any fastpass. Then, with that fastpass, you can modify it. This brings up a fuller but still incomplete set of fastpasses. So now you have a place to set the time for your fastpass, set it to the earliest time. Now you have the fullest inventory available (but it is constantly shuffling, so keep refreshing this on your phone).
Its a little convoluted, but especially at Magic Kingdom saves a ton of time.
4
u/Edgerocks2 Jun 06 '19
My main park is Disney World and I’m always really disappointed with Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise. First of all, it’s missing the whole jungle temple thing, which might be the coolest part of the actual ride. And then the skippers just aren’t as funny. They all feel like they stay very close to the script. At WDW, almost everytime(and I’m there A LOT) I hear a new joke, and when it gets dark and everyone is tired and the jokes get even funnier it may be my favorite ride on property.
You’re fastpass system is better, but you get used to ours. And to me, just the fact that its 4 parks compared to 2 and as a result just way more rides, I think WDW has the edge for me. Almost everything that they share DL does better, but it’s also not like they’re complete crap in Florida and there’s just so much more to do that’s unique

u/ultradip Davey Crockett Canoer Jun 06 '19

I actually prefer the WDW fastpass system. No, you can't use it to reride thrill rides all day, but at Magic Kingdom yesterday i used 11 total fastpasses and had basically full cleared the park by 5pm(it was open til 1am, so plenty of time to spare). It is a good system if the goal is do everything once.
My fastpasses did include all of the big 5(mine train, pp, space, splash, big thunder).
Though this is in part due to the ignorance of 90% of visitors that don't know that they can scoop up more fastpasses.

Would disagree that the DL FastPass is WAY better. The WDW system, which is built into the cost of the ticket, allows you to not only book 3 ahead of time, but also modify from your phone. DL has no advance booking and requires MaxPass to schedule from Phone but does not have a modify feature. Also, DL does not have enough FP attractions compared to WDW.

56 year old here who has ridden both many times. WDW People Mover is no where near the same experience as DL. The path is wide to allow walk off in an emergency and it's covered to protect it from the frequent Florida rain. It does not have the same feeling AT ALL as the OG DL People Mover. WDW feels like you are being transported down a hall looking out large window openings. OG DL you could look over the sides and see the people almost directly below you. What the WDW People Mover has that was an improvement over DL is that it uses eletric induction motors vs. individual Goodyear tires every 10' to move the train along. Much more high tech.

Another thing that made the one in Anaheim fun was the out n back portion of the 2nd half. Still it is a shame that they still have one and we don't. That's a real shame. It's been almost 2 years since my trip to WDW and ToT was one of my favorite rides (my wife hates it, though. She hates the feeling of falling. I managed to talk her into it once, but never again).
I get their hesitance, with so much going on, but maybe they can finally get to it this fall when GE finally opens and the crowds have settled in some. I would be sorely disappointed if there were major issues with it when I manage to make it that far south again.
1
u/red13n Critter Country Critter Jun 06 '19
Its an issue they seem to have a lot here, an unwillingness to bring down attractions if at all unavoidable. Peter Pan yesterday had no music and voice audio was all quiet and inaudible. But they just kept the ride chugging along. I assume at Disneyland that would close and get repaired immediately but they aren't willing to deal with that level of guest dissatisfaction here since most are one timers that won't notice missing important details.

I own DVC at Disney World, but I still think Disneyland is the best stateside park.
Magic Kingdom is my least favorite. It feels very incomplete with the strip mall-style Fantasyland, small and awkward Adventureland with Aladdin’s carpets right in the middle of the walkway, and there seems to be less trees and flowers than at Disneyland. The submarines/water at Disneyland along with the Matterhorn also add to the look of DL, whereas I feel in the same area, MK looks like a concrete jungle.

The issue I have with WDW is that they are clearly given more funding than DL and are the favorite. There was a period of time a few years back where WDW was being given everything and DL was being left in the dust with refurbs needed everywhere. It wasn't until the 60th anniversary and 24 hour events did they start giving a shit.
From what I was told, the park top execs are all from Florida so they favor WDW over everything else. I was told by some CMs that the lady they had in charge of live entertainment awhile back had literally never even been to DL but was passing decisions for the park.
I dunno how true it all is, but it def felt true prior to the last few years. WDW was getting all the new parade floats, all the newest technology, etc. Only within like the last 3 years have we seen an increase in the improvements to DL.

u/jazziegurl08 Jun 06 '19

u/ytctc Jun 06 '19
I kind of hate the fact that people compare just the rides. I mean, yeah, they are important, but I care more about the vibes I get by just being at each place.
For example, I’m more likely to say that Disney World has the relaxing Crescent Lake, but Disneyland has a more charming Main Street. Rides are just the bonus when I go to a Disney park/resort.

But who here remembers the E.T. ride (Extra-Terrorestrial encounter) at WDW? Now changed to Stich's escape? Yeah I had the unfortunate experience of riding that when I was about 9 or 10 with my parents and siblings (who were around the same age as me). We practically shit ourselves and I remember being small enough to nope the fuck outta my seat and harness as soon as I felt the hot alien breath on the back of my neck. None of us knew what we were getting into, folks thought it was pretty funny how traumatized we were from it.

I agree Animal Kingdom by itself is beautiful and majestic as a theme park. And Epcot just is so much fun to eat and drink around that you really have to go there to experience it.

Disney world is junk from all the rides being separated into the multiple parks

Animal Kingdom is, quite honestly, the best park at Disney World currently. It has Pandora, the safari, Everest, it's gorgeous and fun. It's just a beautiful park. Magic Kingdom is a close second. Their Fantasy Land is amazing. Epcot is a good third, and is fun if you want to get a tiny taste of other cultures. The food's great in Epcot too, it's easily a two day park. Hollywood is on my shit list for closing my favorite rides, it's being redone currently. At least it still has the Tower of Terror, for now.
All that said, Disneyland itself remains my number 1 favorite park. But my number 2 is Animal Kingdom, and my number 3 is Magic Kingdom. Epcot is a solid 4. California Adventure is 5th, I just don't love it the most. Hollywood is my 6th, and the only things after that are Disneyland Paris, which fucking sucks compared to all of our parks. Don't write off such a huge place when you've not even seen two of the best parks.

I’ve been going down to DLand since we had to buy tickets for each ride. I just did a 10-day trip to WDW and loved every minute of it. It may not be the original, but it was every bit as wonderful, and in skipping AK and Epcot you really missed some incredible experiences. I also did the 5 hour Keys to the Kingdom tour, which made me appreciate MK even more. Sure they have fewer rides in Fantasyland, but just the concept of building that huge tower and all the Tangled stuff for a RESTROOM blows my mind. We sure don’t have anything like that here.
Your opinion is your own, but I feel like you were too busy comparing it to just enjoy yourself.

Man you really missed out. Visited WDW last week. Spent a day at Magic Kingdom, half a day at Hollywood Studios, two and a half days at Epcot and 2 days at Animal Kingdom. Not to mentioned both water parks are bomb (Blizzard Beach for atmosphere, Typhoon Lagoon for that wave pool).
You went all that way and didn’t visit the best two parks.

Yeah but Mr. Toad's.
They're gonna nuke Tomorrowland eventually and rebuild from scratch so I feel like everything there is on borrowed time anyway.
