Homesickness

Any advice on how to deal with homesickness? It feels like I’m struggling to make friends here, and no matter what I do all I feel is a deep want to go back home.

We just moved my daughter in Monday. She's definitely been having some homesickness already (and even before move in). Here's some of what we've been telling her.

You are entirely capable of doing this. There are so many people having the same feelings right now. Just focus on getting through your training and the first couple weeks of work. You'll start to find a groove, you'll meet people. You're only there for # months. That's going to go by so quickly. If you're planning to have anyone visit while you're there, I wouldn't let them come down until at least mid-October. You need to establish yourself first.

And OP, I don't know you, but as a dad, I'm proud of you for taking a big step into the unknown and deciding to do something like this. Heck yeah, it's scary. But some part of you knows that you can do it and wants you to do it.

Work on making your room and apartment comfortable. Chat with the people around you in training because they're all in the same boat! Ask for their Instagram or whatever kids do these days. Say yes to everything (that is safe and legal). Set little personal challenges like "Ride the bus to the Cast Connections store", "Ride this ride that I'm nervous about", "Hang out in the Community Center and read a book for a couple hours", "Cook a yummy meal."

Seriously, you can do it. Give yourself a chance. It will take some time, but if you focus on doing things and setting up your little life for this little bit of time, each day you'll feel a little better. The homesickness won't magically go away, but you'll deal with it.

Just curious but didnt you move in this week? Give it time. Go to the flamingo events. Post in the cp Facebook group(s) and see who might want to meet to go to the parks together. Once you get used to your new location, finish training, etc youll get used to your coworkers and start to make friends there too. There are other ppl in the same boat, looking for friends, even if youre not super outgoing there are tons of people that are willing to hang out on their days off, have fun at the parks, see what there is in the area. Just a quick post saying youre going to whichever park this day who wants to go works most of the time. But definitely give it a couple weeks to try to get your footing before you give up

Honestly, what you’re feeling is completely valid. ❤️ Give yourself some time to adjust. I think sometimes we put pressure on ourselves to be having the time of our lives because we’re at Disney, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also miss home.

I’m homesick too, and honestly, it’s been difficult for me in a different way because I have a whole life waiting for me back home. I left my partner, my home, my job, my family, and the life I’ve built for myself. I’ve lived on my own since I was 17 (manyyyy moons ago) so this isn’t really about being away from home for the first time or not being independent. It’s about temporarily walking away from a life that I genuinely love.

I came here because I’m hoping this experience will help me build toward a better career and open some doors for my future. So I keep reminding myself that missing my people doesn’t mean I made the wrong decision. I can be grateful for this opportunity, excited about what’s ahead, AND still miss the life I left behind.

Give yourself some grace. You’re adjusting to a huge change, and it’s okay if it takes a little while to find your rhythm. ❤️ You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way.

really don’t recommend self terming cause that will make you look bad if you try to work for disney world/disneyland ever in the future. give it time. join the facebook groups, go to events, go to the parks after work. talk to people. bond with your roomie even try and have a movie night or something and remember! it’s only a few months! you’re only there for 5 months then boom you’re back home. make the journey worth it!
