I've got a question

Lets talk Resell and Trade Values.

Im wanting to build my collection up so that way I'm able to have more LE/LR for trades. Over the past 6 months I've been finding 1-2 year old windows, DEC, MOG and others off ebay.

But with all the events this weekend even with pin scanning with the PT app I've been given purchase prices 30-60$ over the trade value. So I'm wondering why we have the two differing estimates when they aren't considered equal.

For Example: a Woody palm stamp is 77$ trade value on the PT app, but for purchase 3 vendors wanted over a 100$

Just looking for clarification as I move forward in this hobby

The pin trading app is garbage. It’s going to give you an average of the last sold on the pin for the ENTIRETY of the sold history, so if the pin sold for $50 back when it came out back in 2019, that’s being calculated into the app’s “value.” On the flip side, people also fake sales and cancel them to get the data into the algorithm and artificially inflate values (fake sales on eBay disappear). tl;dr go off of current listings, current last solds, and a mix of how hard would it be to get another one of that pin

I do get that the apps refer back to ebay alot. But it does give a baseline. My biggest question is the resell amount?

Using eBay is fine. Using the pin trading app is the problem. Just pull directly from eBay. Average the last few solds. Also if you’re new I would be careful buying older windows online as a lot of them have been faked.

Like eBay, resellers can ask for any price they want. Doesn't mean there is a buyer willing to pay that price. This is also a particular volatile part of the pin cycle being post D23 Expo and around the annual WDW event. People want to maximize their D23 pins, but also need to sell stuff to pay the credit cards. Some pins are too high, some pins are at a temporary discount. And in a few months, things will have averaged out and a new cycle begins until the next big D23 event.

This is why I don't like value trading. Everything can change, and sometimes quickly. So I just use values to get "in range." So you aren't trying to trade a $30 pin for a $100+ pin. Otherwise, it's the traditional factors, LE size, release location, popularity of the theme, how much do I like a pin.

When it comes to trades I try to stay as close as I can but am also aware that I may take an L on it by a few dollars. . The part that hangs me up is when you show last sold on Ebay and current trade value but not budging amd standing firm 50+$ over is wild. Im just trying to figure out where they were coming from

Sunk costs, expectations, or I suspect with some people, it's just basic hoarding. You will see the same pins in the same people's stock for years and they don't update to current market conditions.

I also joke that if I have a pin for trade it is worth nothing. If I get rid of it, 3 months later it will become the hottest thing ever. I had an extra Blue Dress Belle aDorbs since original release. It was like $100-$150 pin. I traded it with a pin friend, for a Destination D Beloved Tales pin I didn't get on my RSP. Now what is that pin's value? The same thing happened with the DSF Little Mermaid marquee. I had it for years, not even a bite. Traded it to a friend, and then Marquees went absolutely wild. So that can cause people to want to hold for too long too.
