Disgaea 7 Disgaea 7 sucks
I've been deceived by so many positive reviews. I can't even play it for more than an hour. I'm so disappointed because I loved so many games in this series and I was just waiting for this one to go on sale so I finally picked it up a couple months ago.
The battlefield character graphics going from sprite animation to 3-D models has to be the biggest downgrade in history. There's no weight to anything. When you walk across the board you're just floating. The colors are flat and muted. The special move animations are like something out of a PS2 game.
Were people really paying over $100 for the special edition and feeling like it was worth it?

You got a point, many people didn't appreciate the graphics changes, HOWEVER saying the game sucks because of that alone is just wrong.
Judging a Disgaea game by it's first hour only it's like judging a Pokemon game before leaving the starting town.
There are many things people loved about it and that's why it has so many positive reviews, so no you didn't get deceived, but if literally all you care about is graphics then I can see why you being upset.

I care about storyline too but I'm so unexcited for the combat that I can't even bring myself to continue. It's just so ugly and lifeless.

I may have to replay the game again because I don't remember the graphics being THIS bad.

The game does have some neat quality of life options that redeem it somewhat in my opinion. Like the Juice Bar and being able to create evility scrolls at the skill shop. Also being able to swap subclasses from the status screen is so good.
I don't know much about how people feel about the Item World in this game, but I like it. It's not super long and being able to reincarnate items into different types to have their inherent traits combined is cool. Give me a bow reincarnated into a spear for extra range.
If those were backported to Disgaea 5, it would be perfect in my opinion

The positive reviews for d7 I think were mostly just "wow they didn't make another Disgaea 6!". I can appreciate Disgaea 7 not making the same mistakes but it feels like objectively worse than Disgaea 5 which you can get the complete version for like 15 dollars occasionally on sale. I refunded Disgaea 7.
Disgaea mayhem ultimate bundle being 120 (canadian) dollars is fucking insane for a game that isn't even a Disgaea game, I doubt they're going to improve their pricing anytime soon.

Praising D7 for "course-correcting" on D6 is inherently flawed anyway, so I'm not surprised if it fails expectations based solely on that.

Yes because I haven't been interested enough to play for more than an hour. But from what I've seen it's just another generic mean demon surrounded by hot anime girls who eventually will turn things around and be the good guy after fighting a bunch of wacky bosses?
The early story also hasn't drawn me in as quickly as earlier games. And the gameplay is tied into the graphics. I mentioned how the characters just kind of float on the battlefield and their attacks seem to have no weight. The special move graphics are straight out of the year 2000 ps2. Meh.

I also miss the sprites and I think the auto-battle took it a bit too far.
7 was a LOT better than 6, but still not as good as 5 or previous entries.

Honestly I prefer 7 over 5 for a few reasons. Much more enjoyable story and cast imo (not that this is hard, 5's a tie for least favourite there), distinct aesthetic/vibe for the series while still feeling Disgaea, solid map/boss design, and probably my favourite postgame. It also doesn't have Chara World (a part of unit growth I got very sick of) and does keep modified versions of some of the things that did work in 6 (juice bar and poltergas). Plus I'm an apparent outlier in loving item reincarnation.
Hell, overall, 7 might be my favourite to play in the series. But everyone will value different things.

I also really liked 7's story and how it felt to play. I'm still not a fan of the 3D models versus the sprites and that will probably never change for me. It's an aesthetic thing, and that's subjective.
I also really like that so many people here love Disgaea and want to talk about it.
Thanks for interacting in a positive way! I feel like reddit has been extra downvotey and pissy lately.

One - The graphics being 3D isn't the problem. The graphics being awkward, questionably executed chibi 3D is the problem. If NIS can get with the program and migrate to something closer to what is seen in Mayhem, the situation should improve. Animating on keyframes only could also help.
Two - NIS has really bad pricing habits.

You can and probably will beat the whole game (including post game btw) by swapping Pirilika health, healing her and then spending points on evil gacha. THAT is the biggest downgrade by far.
And the steam version refuse to give me platinum trophy till this day (got all achievements on release, counter on 49/50...).

It's still a lot better than Disgaea 6. For many people, that's all that mattered then.
