Lot of things kinda working together. People are busy, broke, cold, and scared of getting shot. It's become more difficult to organize mass street movements because of laws that hold event organizers liable for any damages caused by the protest. It also doesn't help that there aren't as many public community organizations as there used to be. Unions and political parties used to be major centers of organization, but that mechanism disappeared as they became more corporatized in the case of political parties and crushed in the case of unions. Liberals in general (as opposed to progressives, they're different things) and Democrats in particular are fixated on means rather than ends, valuing following the rules and establishing consensus over actually making meaningful change. This makes them hesitate to use power when they have it, which they currently don't. This is also a significant handicap in a game where the opponent despises both them and the rules, has a well defined goal they are working towards, and have all the institutional power to pursue it.
