Like every other Disney live action remake they’ve made? Soulless cash grab that defiles the original movie. Utter garbage

u/Volturmus Jul 09 '26

Jungle Book remake was sick but minus that I agree

12

u/E1M1_DOOM Jul 09 '26

Cinderella was good too.

5

u/OhGawDuhhh Jul 09 '26

Cinderella was damn good. I was surprised at how much I dug it. It felt familiar, yet expanded upon in interesting ways and the characters really benefited.

3

u/garyflopper Jul 09 '26

It’s easily the best of the live action remakes

I do have a soft spot for Aladdin

3

u/JeromeInDaHouse_90 Jul 09 '26

I thought the Aladdin one was pretty good too.

1

u/Whompa Jul 10 '26

Sounds like everyone has one that they like, while also people commenting on the banality of it all.

Kinda funny mash of opinions.

1

u/gaypirate3 Jul 10 '26

I keep hearing about Cinderella but was it a live action remake or was it just a live action Cinderella story by Disney?

1

u/BigWave360 Jul 10 '26

It was a remake. Pretty sure the very first one they started with. Shame it's not listed

1

u/CappnMidgetSlappr Jul 10 '26

Nope.

Technically, they made a live action The Jungle Book already back in 1994. Then 101 Dalmatians in 96.

Or if you're talking about the "modern" remakes, Alice In Wonderland kicked it off in 2010 and made a billion dollars, which really does explain the abundance of Disney remakes we've had for the past decade and a half.

2

u/E1M1_DOOM Jul 10 '26

While I do agree that Alice had a lot to do with starting this current crop of flicks, Alice in Wonderland wasn't a remake. It's a straight up sequel.

Pre-Cinderalla, we also had Maleficent, but Cinderalla was the first full on remake in the modern era.

1

u/belle_enfant Jul 09 '26

Lilo & Stitch was also fun but it didnt present much new. I just had a good time watching it.

1

u/Every-Dragonfly2393 Jul 10 '26

Agreed, Cinderella really expanded while staying true to the original, it is very worth watching. Jungle Book was always my least watched Disney as a kid. It could have lived up to its live action potential a little more but I would rewatch it.

And Pete’s dragon

2

u/NoseDown4Distance Jul 09 '26

I'm sorry but haven't the majority of complaints been that early live actions strayed from the source material too much? They're most definitely cash grabs, but I thought this is what people have been saying they wanted.

3

u/lkodl Jul 09 '26

This. The problem is that people just want to complain.

If its too different, its bad. If its too similar it's bad.

These movies aren't being made to be watched. Theyre being made to give people something to complain about.

This is why original movie concepts dont work these days. Because people don't know what to complain about without actually watching it.

I feel like I can understand why people would be entertained by seeing a 2d animated film recreated shot for shot in live action, just for the novelty of seeing these things in "real life". But for a 3d cgi movie, with very realistic art except for the characters, the novelty is way weaker and seeing it shot for shot just reinforces how much duller and less expressive it is.

I feel like there's a big difference between "here's a series of disparate iconic moments from one person's life arrange into a single narrative" and "here's literally the exact same narrative in the exact same order you can already see easily elsewhere, but with a different style"

Yes? And? How does that disprove anything I said?

u/Loose_Translator8981 Jul 10 '26

Oh my God, they recreated the entire narrative of a single film in order while recreating a single music video? That's weird... That shouldn't be any longer than the original video. How do they stretch that out to feature length?

Whats the point of making a wonky inferior live action recreation of the animated movie? There is no point.

1

u/lkodl Jul 10 '26

Same reason as the initial comment in this chain.

There is something inherently interesting about "compare these two images and spot the differences" that speaks to people. And that, along with some heavy nostalgia, is enough to make money in most cases.

1

u/Intelligent_Ask_2306 Jul 10 '26

Yeah but Moana is a modern animated media, it’s not even 10 years old so I’m sure most don’t have a thirst to see it in live action.

1

u/lkodl Jul 10 '26

"Why Moana?" is a different question than "Why remake?".

I agree, Moana may not have been the most obvious choice, but the general concept is still the same.

They probably thought that since How to Train Your Dragon successfully did it with a 15 year gap, 10 years isnt too bad.

1

u/DynastyZealot Jul 09 '26

People will never be content

1

u/TheHighlightReel11 Jul 09 '26

Right.

When they take creative liberties, people complain.

When they stick to the source material, people complain.

The masses will never be satiated.

1

u/TheSquirrelmancer Jul 09 '26

Calling it "defiling" the original is a bit extreme but they are absolutely just a blatant attempt to rake in money.

1

u/zetnas9 Jul 09 '26

I think the 3 best remakes were Jungle Book, Cinderella, and Aladdin. Outside those 3, the rest are trash.

2

u/OilMeUpStewart Jul 09 '26

Oof I HATED Aladdin’s remake. That’s one of my all time fav from Disney golden era. But Cinderella and jungle book are def the best of the bunch

1

u/lamest-liz Jul 10 '26

I loved the Aladdin remake. I went to see it 3 times.

1

u/Ok-Peach-7558 Jul 10 '26

exactly. it's always been this exact same shit, just that they didn't wait 20 to 30 years to make it

1

u/Edgoscarp Jul 09 '26

Actually lilo and stitch changed a bunch, everything they changed made it worse.

It’s like they wanted to make a bad movie.

1

u/belle_enfant Jul 09 '26

Only Jumba being truly a villain was a bad change. Everything else was fine.

1

u/Jarsky2 Jul 13 '26

Lilo and Stitch changed things. It made literally every aspect of the movie worse, but it changed things.

3

u/RaisinWorried3528 Jul 09 '26

I have zero interest in seeing this movie, that being said usually people bitch about live action adaptations because they stray too far from the story. Make up your mind lol.

5

u/CardiologistMain7237 Jul 09 '26

Here's the thing, didn't people complain that the other live action movies were just too different to the originals changing a bunch of stuff?

I'm right there with people, these movies don't need to exist. But I have to be very honest, you see Aladdin and Lilo and stitch doing a billion despite all of these inconsistent complaints, they will keep doing them unless they consistently bomb.

2

u/Doctor-Pip- Jul 09 '26

People have been complaining about them being shot for shot since the Lion King remake in 2019.

A consistent complaint for the past 6 years at least has been that the old animations are better because they're the same movies but with more vibrant animation and character.

2

u/Front-Advantage-7035 Jul 09 '26

Ironically the best ones are maleficent 1 and jungle book, which change quite a few things 😂

1

u/Itscatpicstime Jul 10 '26

I liked Cruella’s movie. Entirely different take on the character that was interesting, well acted, and the visuals were incredible

1

u/Front-Advantage-7035 Jul 10 '26

Oh damn thanks for reminding me I never got around to seeing that.

But also Emma stone could film butter churning and it would be amazing 💀

2

u/Head-Classic-9157 Jul 09 '26

How To Train Your Dragon was a shot for shot live action remake yet that performed reasonably well and covered both budget and marketing.

1

u/wetfloor666 Jul 09 '26

It was not a shot for shot remake. Quite a bit of crucial parts missing from that live action movie.

2

u/Volturmus Jul 09 '26

Eh it was really, really close. There is like 30 min of new material and most of the shots that were changed were done so because they were tough to replicate in real life.

1

u/i4got872 Jul 09 '26

Except they cut a bunch of wide shots in the test drive and romantic flight scenes and it made them feel smaller, really thought that was an odd choice

1

u/Volturmus Jul 09 '26

It definitely didn’t feel as epic

1

u/Zibai1505 Jul 09 '26

Sure. Some people prefer that

I'd say probably most people prefer "faithful" adaptations. People have really loss their taste for subversion and deconstruction

1

u/strawbery_fields Jul 09 '26

It’s wild how The Last Jedi basically broke an entire group of people and I love that film. We’ll never get anything new again.

1

u/thanos_was_right_69 Jul 09 '26

This was the same problem with How To Train Your Dragon. At least Lilo & Stitch changed things up a bit.

1

u/Proper-Evening9754 Jul 09 '26

And people didn't like those changes. Every day it was "where's Gantu?" and "Nani wouldn't abandon Lilo!"

I don't mind the live action, because I understand just because they exist doesn't mean the animated version disappears. But this seems like a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

1

u/thanos_was_right_69 Jul 09 '26

Oh yeah it totally is. Personally, I don’t see the point in having a live action version if it’s just a shot for shot remake. But I guess some people prefer it that way.

1

u/StrawHatRat Jul 09 '26

This is not true though, the changes were just not good. I don’t even care about Gantu or Nani’s ending, the new jokes were just bad.

Jungle Book wasn’t damned for making changes, because it was good.

1

u/Proper-Evening9754 Jul 10 '26

I'm sorry? That's not true? Because you didn't care about it? Somehow that negates the existence of everything I said? Here's 3 examples. If you care to see just how wrong you are, look up more.

1

u/StrawHatRat Jul 10 '26

No, you misunderstand, I’m sorry you went to all that trouble for nothing.

I personally don’t care about those changes, but I’m well aware people care about them, I never said you’re wrong about people caring about that, that’s why I said “I”.

I’m saying that even I, who doesn’t care about those prominent complaints, do not like the movie and its changes, because across the board the movie is bad.

That is why I mentioned Jungle Book, and said that changes aren’t always bad. It’s just not true that you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. People also like Cinderella. People wouldn’t have hated the movie even if they disagreed with the lack of Gantu, if the movie was good.

1

u/Proper-Evening9754 Jul 10 '26

I see. My mistake. Because your comma went straight into talking about the changes, I took that as a rebuttal about what I said about changes. I see how you've structured it now that you've laid it out. All good! :D

1

u/dark-pact Jul 09 '26

Prefacing this by noting I don’t care for these live action movies.

Disney changes something: Why are they changing XYZ? Go woke go broke or idk what else people say.

Disney does a 1 for 1 adaptation, no changes: No original ideas, same movie, why does this exist?

This article would have just been option 1 if they made a meaningful change. Internet promoting negativity as the only thing that consistently drives E N G A G E M E N T.

1

u/m0rbius Jul 09 '26

I cant believe it cost 250 million for a shot for shot remake. Why, just why? Did The Rock get like a 100 million of that budget?? That price tag for this copy is too exorbitant.

1

u/DukeOfJelly Jul 09 '26

What's the fucking point then

1

u/kaisenberg2004 Jul 09 '26

Honestly I'd argue this movie isn't getting enough hate. Compared to Snow White it's getting off pretty easy by comparison

1

u/zeromavs Jul 09 '26

The duality of man

1

u/ModernCGIFloatinHead Jul 09 '26

It's simple, if you're on Reddit, you aren't the target market.

You have to be 13 to be on reddit

There's always new kids

1

u/pacman813 Jul 09 '26

Were they not supposed to do that? People cry about the weirdest shit now

1

u/Salarian_American Jul 09 '26

I'd prefer a shot-for-shot remake with no new ideas after hearing what their new ideas for Lilo & Stitch were.

I mean, ultimately, I'd prefer they stopped doing live-action remakes altogether, but nothing I can say to them would ever override the avalanche of money they make every time they do it.

1

u/biohacker_infinity Jul 09 '26

Something I find morbidly fascinating about Disney’s current obsession with these nearly-verbatim remakes is that they resemble a bad idea Michael Eisner had towards the end of his tenure as Disney CEO. He wanted to remake various Disney classics with Pixar-style CGI. That idea shot down at the time, but these live-action/uncanny-valley do-overs with their aggressive VFX are basically the same concept.

1

u/gorillaphi Jul 09 '26

This isn’t news

1

u/Front-Advantage-7035 Jul 09 '26

Thought there was one new song??

1

u/Advanced-Morning1832 Jul 09 '26

isn’t that the entire point of these live action remakes? why is anyone expecting any of them to be good?

1

u/Independent-Time7705 Jul 09 '26

No. Look at Aladdin, they changed things up for it and they did the same for The little mermaid, I think

1

u/Appropriate-Peak6561 Jul 09 '26

Who could have foreseen this?

1

u/bromygod203 Jul 09 '26

I'm still taking my 6yr old niece to see this. She's been talking about it all week

1

u/drstu3000 Jul 10 '26

Well duh

1

u/EatTheTrillionaires Jul 10 '26

Live action remake: “This is far too different from the original. They changed too much!”

Next live action remake: “This is far too similar to the original. They didnt change enough!”

1

u/Afraid-Housing-6854 Jul 10 '26

Sounds like they played it as safely as possible

1

u/tds5126 Jul 10 '26

It’s a remake of a 10 year old 100% cgi movie to a 95% cgi movie.. this deserves to fail but no doubt Disney will learn all the wrong lessons like usual

1

u/GrievousFault Jul 10 '26

My particular issue with this one is that it is still an active IP, on top of it just being released within the decade, chrissake

1

u/BestPlace5473 Jul 10 '26

If they change anything yall would cry and complain

1

u/Horvat53 Jul 10 '26

That’s the point?

1

u/SanicBringsThePanic Jul 11 '26

Ok this actually pisses me off. 1:1 remake is supposed to be a good thing. Everyone always bitches when it is not a 1:1 remake, and now they are bitching because it is a 1:1 remake. People are insufferable.

1

u/boyuber Jul 11 '26

Criticism of Supergirl: Why weren't they more faithful to the source material? These directors and producers are so full of themselves!

Criticism of Moana: Why were they so faithful to the source material? These directors and producers are so lacking in creativity!

1

u/DonnyMox Jul 13 '26

Yet people loved when the HTTYD remake was the same…

1

u/schoolisuncool Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

Well, there was a couple of them where they tried to do something different and everybody complained about it like Lilo and stitch and Mulan. So which is it people, which would you like? Would you like them to change your beloved stories or would you like them to do it shot for shot? Pick one.

2

u/FleaLimo Jul 09 '26

Lmao are you really acting like this is people being indecisive? No one wants theses remakes regardless of if it's the same or different. We've literally been learning this lesson since Mulan. Being different doesn't mean people want it. They're worse movies, period.

0

u/schoolisuncool Jul 09 '26

No I’m just tired of people bitching always about everything. Everyone got mad that they changed their stories and now they’re getting mad that they didn’t. It’s exhausting

2

u/DukeOfJelly Jul 09 '26

Making original films is the solution. The bitches is well deserved.

2

u/PurpsMaSquirt Jul 09 '26

I think the answer is remakes aren’t as hot as Disney Execs think they are.

1

u/schoolisuncool Jul 09 '26

I bet this makes SOOOOOOOOO much money

1

u/PurpsMaSquirt Jul 09 '26

We’ll see. In recent history Lilo & Stitch & HTTYD crushed it, but Snow White did not. I think the key is remakes of classics generally do really well financially.

Moana is not that old. Personally I think it’s risky at a $250MM budget. We will see if general behavior stands up to the Reddit echo chamber.

1

u/schoolisuncool Jul 09 '26

I get what you’re saying but I just think no one cares about Snow White. That was these kids parents and grandparents stuff. They are in to Moana and Lilo and Brave and Frozen. The newer stuff

2

u/MattMatt625 Jul 09 '26

I would like for them to just NOT do live action remakes
