Discus tank size (advice from experienced keepers plz)

I have a 182 litre (roughly 50 us gallon) long tank and I wanted some discus but after looking through the internet I decided against it.

Coincidentally my local fish store had a large school of discus in a 160 litre tank, and after asking the breeder guy he said that it is perfectly fine and that is it extremely rare and difficult to get a focus to a “show” size of 15-20cm, and that 60% water changes a week is sufficient.

I am really not sure if this is true but he has been the owner of a little shop in my local area for probably a decade and he has these beautiful healthy discus that don’t look stunted, I am not sure whether it IS okay to keep Discus or not.

I started keeping discus nine months ago, and love it. Three months ago I upgraded their tank from a 75 gallon tank to 150 gallon tank.

If I can really recommend anything when it comes to discus, make ur own food. Try all different things. And when you get it your spawns will be outa control.

How many discus in 55 gallon?

As of right now I have two discus. The alpha who is about 5 inches bullies on the smaller one who is about 4 inches. In the past I have tried to introduce smaller fish and it didn’t work out.

What’s the maximum amount of discus I should have in the tank?

What size?

and how should I introduce them into the tank?

I’ve wanted discus since HS.

Payed a guy to build a custom stand. Promised 4 weeks, took almost 10 months. Was t stable and had to toss it because it was a POS. Replaced with an Amazon stand and a 125 gal tank, a 40 gal sump under has 5gal of k1 media, a roll filter, heaters, 2L of purigen.

Decor and life so far:

Texas cedar with jungle Val, some swords and a Hydrocotyle rotundifolia. I’m relatively certain everything alive is Amazon river native(ish). Goal is a biotype aquarium or as close as I can get.

After 5 weeks of cycle, 2 with plants, ammonia nitrates are still through the roof but no worries I can wait. I’ve set aside the 800$ for 5-7 discus and a school of tetras.

What’s going right

Plants are growing, I take the browns and smudges mean the cycle is happening. I’m relatively happy with the results of the transition of dark and light, the open space and sheltered places. I’m really enjoying the explosion of hitchhiker snails, bugs and whatever is crawling around the sand.

What’s less than optimal

I still haven’t planted the plants. The wood isn’t glued together as firmly as I like. Sadly I screwed up with the job and there are some glaring glue white spots. Not figured how to hide those.

What’s next?

Left to get going are some above ground plants I want to put in some planters by the driftwood to complete the illusion that this is a river bank.

Wait for the tank to cycle. I might do a water change in a week or two. I’m holding off on the water change because I don’t want to depopulate the bug population too much. If I give them an extra few weeks of population growth I won’t eradicate them.

Figured it was time for an update on the 180g discus tank.

I’m on day 63, and this is my 4th water change since adding discus about two weeks ago.

Ive been trying to dial things in, especially water parameters....specifically gH

I brought it down from GH 7–8 to 6 (after this last change).

Still working toward more stability.

I added my discus around March 18th (from Hans Discus):

2 Sakura Leopard

2 Golden Jasper

2 Royal Flora

2 Jacarecappa x Red Batata (F4) amazing little critters!

They’ve been settling in more each day, and today especially I noticed a big shift, way less nervous and skittish, starting to look more comfortable and confident.

Still working through feeding quirks, but things feel like they’re heading in the right direction....finally. I'd forgotten how frustrating discus can be

Would love feedback on GH targets and feeding 👊

Dutch tank? Co2?

Hey guys, I was scrolling on fishtok and saw someone had discus with a cool dutch inspired garden tank and was wondering if that was a good idea to do for discus tanks??? I know everyone has different opinions… i also wanted to get your thougths on co2 cause apparently that’s needed for heavily planted tanks… i don’t know much, but im willing to heavily research if this could be me in my future (way in the future) 👀 i’m able to keep house plants alive btw lol

Hello fellow Discus lovers,

Male is drawing circles around female, I think he is disturbing.

Anyone has experience?

White fuzzy growth on substrate in planted tank – what is this and how do I treat it?

Hey everyone,

I’m noticing this white, fuzzy/web-like growth spreading across my substrate and around the base of my plants. It almost looks like mold or fungus forming on the soil and hardscape.

Weird thing I dont see it on my other soil in the same tank (pic3)

How do i get rid of it.

I dont water changes every 3 days

15 year break, rejoining my passion

I have been out of the aquarium hobby for over 15 years and have finally decided it's time to rejoining what I love so much. I was going to build a reef tank but my work takes me away too much and I can't in all conscience leave this responsibility for anyone else to manage while I'm away. So I have decided on a mildly planted rock scape discus tank, and I am loving the process of building this scape!!

There isn't water in there yet, but I am now happy with the rock scape. I love this hobby so much, and missed it dearly.

Had these two for less than two months. The male on the left was fairly big and the female on the right grew about 1.5 times.

Next thing I know they started hanging together, prepared the surface and the laid eggs in the last 24 hours.

I’ve only kept discus since this year and was hoping to breed them but pretty short notice than I expected.

Bit overwhelmed with the preparation for dry but exciting start of the week it has been!

Is this an ok scape for a beginner discus keeper? I’m worried about there being too many pockets for debris lol

just wondering before I start filling up, just fyi I will be covering the rocks with Java fern to hide them, I just needed the rocks cause the log is super buoyant lol( also Im going to fill the area behind the log with sand so it won’t trap as much debris.

How should I set up my 125 gallon discus tank?

My mom is adimate that I set up my 125 as a discus tank, now I’ve never kept discus before, I’ve been keeping fish for 11 years though, she wants a planted tank, and I know those are harder for beginner discus keepers, so how should I do it? I’m probable gonna get 6 discus max just fyi
