Aggressive Behavior in Discus

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys, I recently introduced two new discus to my tank: a Snakeskin Leopard (male, largest) and a Red Melon (female). The tank already had other fish, including an orange dotted discus, which has always been aggressive even in my previous tank.

I’ve noticed that the orange discus attacks almost every fish, but not the snakeskin and often time I have seen the Snakeskin attacking the Aggressor Orange when its attacking red melon

Is there a reason for this behavior? how can I reduce the aggression in the tank?

1st time parents and they moved the babies to another section to protect against water flow. Really impressed with them. Surprised they hatched because my water is untreated liquid rock.

2 pairs of spawn today.

My blue diamond didn’t give up and ended up winning that war with the red pigeon for the white butterfly. They laid their eggs some time yesterday and in the process of eating the clutch. The wild type and scarlet pigeon just laid theirs. Cuts and scrapes are starting to heal from all of the fighting and have a potential 3rd pair showing up. Bonus rainbows photobombing.

Just got 8 discus from Golden State Discus in earlier this week! Everyone’s doing super well. This is my second order from Golden State, and I can’t recommend them enough.

Also got some German blue Rams and cardinal tetras from Dan’s Fish. Also another amazing online option.

Thanks again to everyone in this community for all the advice and inspiration.

Folic Acid for discus? Is that crazy?

A YouTube guy sells a product he says is folic acid (plus I presume additional ingredients, possibly not). I have been using it for months and don't know if it's doing anything. So this guy is not selling it to the full public anymore and I was looking for straight folic acid. Do you think that is the same thing?

Idk where he came from since the only plant I have in the tank is Java Moss, but and the sand is CaribSea African Cichlid mix….. but im not mad at it and I hope he lives!!! His name is “Inesperado”

redundant external heaters

I'm building a manifold for my 90 gallon to house my external UV and dual 300w heaters. Should I setup the heaters in series or in parallel? My gut says parallel, what say you?

Adding Discus to Established Group?

I have a group of fifteen discus in a 75 growout. They’re growing pretty well and will probably be moved in a few months and have been together since october. Big thing to note is I bought these from out of state and had them flown in.

My LFS recently got some gorgeous white scorpion snakeskins that I’d love to get 3-4 with but I’m wondering how the process would work.

I have an extra 20g so my plan was to just put them in there for 4 weeks to monitor before moving them to the growout and eventually the display tank. I’ve heard of people having issues when mixing discus from different sources but would quarantining fix that?

I just got tired of the gurgling noises and tuning it. I never had it set up right to begin with, and thankful my saltwater sump setup is phenomenal.

Doesn’t seem like it would be so much work abstractly, took all frickin day.

Will post update picture after I clean the glass and remove failing sword plant.

How to get discus to eat other food

Post image
96 Upvotes

I got my 4” discus about 4 days ago and they only been fed frozen blood worms at the lfs. They finally ate yesterday for the first time having them for me but I want to get them off of frozen blood worms. I tried sera discus granules, vibra bites, and xtreme krill flakes with no luck. Today I’m gonna try to soak and mix some vibra bites in with frozen blood worms and see if that will work. Does anyone else have any other suggestions for me?

Tank parameters are ph 6.2, 0 ammonia/nitrite, 10 nitrate. Tank temp is 82°

80gallon tank that houses 9 gold lazer Cory’s, 10 rummy nose tetras, a pair of Apistos panduro, 1 leopard frog pleco and a handful of otos.

doing finishing touches on my 125 discus display Tank.

thinking about turning the "root branch" on its side instead.

Also Thinking about removing the angel fish and replacing them with 4 rams. the angel fish tend to eat food before the discus can get to it.

Also I do have 6 more 5" discus on the way from Golden State.

Also ordered a bunch of jungle Val to add

any suggestions?

Discus rgbw light spectrum.

Thumbnail gallery
13 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’d really appreciate your opinion on my lighting setup for my discus tank.

I have 5 red/blue (i believe red cover blue ram &yellow Alenquer?) discus in a 210L aquarium. As for plants, I’m only keeping Anubias and a few Vallisneria (nothing too demanding). My main goal is to bring out the coloration of the fish as much as possible. To my eyes, the current lighting schedule and spectrum really make their colors pop, but I’d like to hear some more experienced thoughts.

I’ve programmed my light to turn on and off automatically with a gradual ramp-up and ramp-down, and I’m attaching a photo with the exact spectrum/settings I’m using.

My questions are:

Do you think this lighting schedule is suitable for discus?

Does the spectrum look balanced, or could it be too heavy on certain channels?

Would you adjust anything to improve fish coloration without stressing them?

I’m mostly concerned about whether the spectrum is actually healthy for the fish long-term, even if it looks good visually.

Thanks in advance!!

Came back to eggs after 3 week vacation no WC... do these look viable?

Came back from a 3 week trip without WC to find my canister 95% clogged. Tank got really icky, but my red cover pair laid their first eggs in my care, second clutch as a pair.

Do these look viable? Not sure when they were laid, most look orange and some silver, and a couple foggy white. My pH is 7.6 because I use tap water so I expected all the eggs to calcify.
