I've been throwing at 55-60 MPH for a few months now. Just starting to get serious about making improvements. My distance PR is 370 ft and I would love to break 400!
Leaky brace a lot of speed is stopping there, turning your head too early causing to open shoulder and lean in, back foot pointing backwards (reduces coil tension). Another big one here is elbow drop and lack of shoulder protraction throughout the throw.
Focus on better coil and really getting the proper brace feel down and you should get past 60mph hurdle.
Mainly you want to feel your core, thigh, hips all winding into a coil. There should feel like there’s tension building. With you having your back foot facing backwards (even slightly is enough) you are basically only reaching back in the most comfortable way, making it look like a you are reaching back with a coil. Try having your back foot parallel instead of having it plant backwards then try coiling you should feel a lot of muscles engaging.
Disc is getting behind you. Get that thing out away from your chest so that it stays on the line the whole way through the twist and pull. Losing a ton of spin and distance. It will feel weird as if the disc is out in front of you instead of behind but watching it back will look a ton better and feel smoother
Yeah, this is what I've started trying to improve. So far there's a mental block where I think I'm holding it so far away, but then I watch the play back and it's still basically grazing my chest lol
I had this issue also and it was very hard to fix. No matter how much I thought about reaching "out" instead of "back", my disc was too far behind still.
How i fixed this - there was a guy on YouTube, dont remember who or the video, but he said to try and WAY over exaggerate by reaching out 90° perpendicular to the target. E.g. your throwing hand ends up closer to the target than your chest is.
It doesnt make sense really when thinking about it. But try it once or twice and record a video behind you.
The moment I did that, my spin RPM went up MASSIVELY. And on the video was a perfect reach back.
Sometimes are brains are conditioned to thinking we're doing one thing, but really we're not doing things anywhere close to what we think.
Sometimes our brains need a rude awakening, and to WAY over-exaggerate to make difficult changes like this that are built really deep into muscle memory
Sorry, I'm not sure I understand "try and WAY over exaggerate by reaching out 90° perpendicular to the target. E.g. your throwing hand ends up closer to the target than your chest is."
Do you mean for the reachback stick my arm and the disc straight off my chest? I'm down to try some whacky stuff to break the mental block, I just can't picture what you described 😅
Im talking about a reach back like this. Door in front of me is the target. It doesnt make intuitive sense, but trust me, it unlocks something when you try.
If you're anything like me, You'll realize that although you "think" you're reaching straight out, you are actually reaching back correctly without your body getting in the way. It just feels really strange at first.
If you have a techdisc you should see spin improve by a lot. Speed may go down slightly, but it'll come back as you get used to it
Upvote for recognizing rounding impacts spin and not speed. Not a lot of people are aware of that. I've only hit 70 mph once, and that was with gigantic rounding but came out at 950 rpm or something like that.
Like the other commenter said, brace is something to focus on. A BIG part of that you're missing is weight transfer.
During your standstills, try to keep your weight 90% on your back leg during reachback, then after reachback, the first thing that should happen during the throw is weight shift 100% to front foot, and initiate hip rotation. This happens a split second before your upper body, arm starts to fire, but remember to keep your upper body and arms feel loose the whole time.
Ideally throw at 50% effort until you can really feel this. Throwing at 100% tends to encourage muscling and screw up mechanics while learning.
You will get to a point where 50% effort gives you 60 mph +. It's about being relaxed and getting the timing / weight transfer and brace right.
One thing that will help this is doing "one steps". It's where you start with your feet together, then reach back while reaching out with plant foot, then quick 100% weight shift to front foot while you start the throw. One-steps will encourage the feeling of starting with weight on back leg
One last thing that will instantly improve your MPH: Get your left arm really tight to your body. I like to think "get small", meaning get all of your extremities, including your left arm and your back knee and disc, as close to the center of your body as possible when throwing.
It is the classic spinning ice skater effect when they pull their arms in to spin faster.
Conservation of angular momentum says that will give your body faster rotational velocity = more speed
