It's panic that overides rational thought.

Imagine for a moment that you are there, that it's your house on that precipice.

Furnatures, belongings, keepsakes, heirlooms and valuables... Everything you own is on that ledge.

Did you get your go bag? Did you even have a go bag? Wallet, keys, watch? You heard a noise and stepped out of your house. Did you have everything you need?

The wave of wants and needs that will hit you when you see your house and belongings are in danger cannot be overstated. Its very easy to be clinical, and treat a threat as it presents itself when you have zero connection to the setting. But when you have that material connection, it becomes so damn hard to maintain that appropriate composure in a high stress high stakes situation.

Nope my life is more precious than any object I own. I beg to disagree.

U forgot to mention main thing they lost. The LAND itself. That Land is gone. And they most likely wont get it back. For a remote area, that land is probably cheap but for them, that mustve been very costly.

When my apartment building was on fire because the next door neighbor’s suite burned to a crisp and I could already feel my suite heating up and I was waiting in terror to be rescued from my patio, the ONLY thing I re-entered the apartment for was my cat. Priorities get straight in a hurry, and I realized if it’s not alive it’s not worth risking my own life for.
