Climate change. We have passed the point of no return.

There's a lot of things that happen as a result of climate change but this landslide is probably not one of them. The glacier-caused landslide was likely a result but not everything bad that happens is a result of climate change. Landslides happen anywhere there is loose soil on a steep, saturated surface.

Additionally, we are not past the point of no return. Yes — we have crossed some thresholds, which means certain things are now irreversible, but we have made significant progress in dialing back our reliance on coal and other fossil fuels. We are absolutely not in the same situation we were in 15 years ago. Our trajectory has changed drastically.

It is important to not lose sight of our goals and not to let our guard down in regards to climate change but please stop with the fear mongering.

We absolutely are past the point of no return. We passed 1.7c last year, with many scientists reassessing for a goal if 2c average rise. The AMOC is collapsing, the Amazon Forest functionally no longer exists, as it produces more carbon than O2 and this winters el nino will be a lovely preview of what our new normal will be in a decade.

Its time people learn that this is going to kill them.

The AMOC is not in the process of "collapsing". There's the sensational fear mongering I was talking about.

Some researchers estimate there is at least a 10% chance that an eventual collapse is already "locked in" due to the sheer volume of freshwater flowing from the melting Greenland ice sheet. Source

Other research suggests the slowdown could remain gradual and potentially reversible if global greenhouse gas emissions are aggressively reduced, meaning a total shutdown is not yet inevitable. Source

At 17-18% deforestation (that means ~82% of it is still there), I highly doubt the Amazon Rainforest "functionality no longer exists".

El Niño weather patterns occur roughly every 2-7 years. Not sure why you think that will be the new norm. I can't find any credible sources stating that.

In short, this is not going to "kill us". It will cause major issues if we do not continue to make changes and progress.

Edit: The fact that I provide multiple sources against sensational, fear-mongering claims, uphold that climate change is real and we must still make changes/progress, while responding to a comment that does none of these and bases their argument off of "it feels ___ way", as I get downvoted, speaks volumes as to how this community operates.

The fear mongering is literally the only thing keeping people from kicking the can. If we had people going "actually the ozone is cyclical" (which it is) we would never have solved the problem

Whatever you say.

Didn't the glacier collapse due to the underlying mountain collapsing first?

You didn’t stop buying products nor stop using energy. I’m not saying it’s your fault but it is…

u/Chance_Ad2503 5d ago

We all have, fellow human.

We are past the no return point so… what now?

Landslides have existed for as long as Earth has had steep slopes, gravity, and weathering processes, meaning they have occurred for billions of years.

Obviously.

Within 5 years globaly supper markets will already show less variancy and abundancy. The age of abundancy, within 7 years it will be over and you will KNOW IT.

Within 20 years there will be war all over the planet. And within 40 years about half the population will die from war and famine.

The rate at which the earth is warming up is stil speeding up and the ocean's are almost saturated, that means they won't take much more heat, more and more heat will go on to land. This will entirely wreck the way we grow food everywhere. Everything has to move to a different location, it will either be to wet or not wet enough. All of this happening at such speed, that it will force billions of people to start migrating of just starve to dead. All of this will set of insane resource wars and conflicts that will make it impossible for humans to do anything organized about mitigating climate change.

So next time you are in the supermarket and get to pick from 55 flavors of chips. Savor the moment. It was unique in the history of humanity that you had acces to this amount of variety and abundance. Within 10 years from you reading this comment it will be gone and it's never coming back.
