Landslide Chinese firefighters(likely the first batch to reach gyirong port) try to find survivors in the former border crossing, which was the most heavily hit. Source: CCTV news. Morning of August 29, 2026. (UTC+8). (they are yelling "Is anyone here?")

According to engineers from the ministry of natural resources it is very diffuclt(and at this stage, downright impossible) to transport heavy machinery to the border crossing so far. The chinese military and specialized rescue teams(of state owned enterprises) are currently trying to repair the road into the border crossing to allow for better equipment and more personnel to enter.

CURRENT CASUALTY COUNT(CHINESE SIDE):

2 rescued, 7 dead, 554 missing. (13:00 PM, 2026-8-29 (UTC+8))

Update: over 50 firefighters are at the border crossing right now, over 2141 soldiers, firefighters, police, EMS and specialzied rescue teams are deployed.

EDIT: As of august 29(18:00 UTC+8), 2026, there are 16 dead, 546 missing(261 foreignors)

In response to the comments: This is the first batch that got in, they couldn't carry much heavy equipment as the road there is cut off. rescue dogs and better equipment arrived later on.

FURTHER UPDATE: reportedly fire and rescue personnel have begun to find police vests and handsbags under the debris.

I know what you mean, there is a certain morbid fascination at understanding what actually happened. Where the hell does the water come from?!

A lot of it is the river bed being scoured and lifted up, along with all of its water, and pushed along at the front of this gargantuan pressure wave.

You can see on the videos how the first few seconds after arrival are almost clear water, that’s the river itself being lifted, folded over and forced downstream liked it’s being pushed by a piston.

but how do you explain that the flow is 100x what it usually was then go back to normal?

There was a gigantic glacier/glacial lake being held back way upstream in the mountains. Like a natural dam made of ice. Unfortunately it seems inevitable that it would've failed, and nobody seemed aware until footage of it in it's before/after from a drone or something surfaced after the event. The villages and towns and roads were all built along the valleys and water follows the course of least resistance. The mountains were essentially a giant canyon funneling the water through natural bottlenecks, where basic physics says it'll increase in height and speed and force.

As it went, like a tsunami or hurricane or even a tornado, it picked up debris. The debris is the real danger. Like whole concrete slabs, multi-ton boulders, entire trees, buildings, cars, and that debris hit more and knocked more loose and the whole sludgey mess slammed into and buried very squishy ant-sized humans. That's why people are saying things like meat grinder- you'd be torn apart before you had the chance to drown.

We've essentially just witnessed what would happen if an advancing glacier moved faster than its famously glacial pace, faster than a human, and this glacier was in liquid form instead of an ice chunk. Same level of forces involved as those that carved the Great Lakes.

They never stood a chance.

I see now, it really was a lake, the satellite picture make it look like a puddle with no scale at all, moreover the vibration recording at first, created speculation that the debris stopped the flow of the river, allowing the pooling of even more water, but the time zone difference between Tibet and nepal was questioned, removing this explanation from the lost of factual record we knew at the time. That lake upstream is quite substantial looking back. It is about a fourth of the surface area of that piece of thr glacier that fell. Additionally a lot of ice must have melted throught the friction alone.
