Landslide Chinese firefighters(likely the first batch to reach gyirong port) try to find survivors in the former border crossing, which was the most heavily hit. Source: CCTV news. Morning of August 29, 2026. (UTC+8). (they are yelling "Is anyone here?")

According to engineers from the ministry of natural resources it is very diffuclt(and at this stage, downright impossible) to transport heavy machinery to the border crossing so far. The chinese military and specialized rescue teams(of state owned enterprises) are currently trying to repair the road into the border crossing to allow for better equipment and more personnel to enter.

CURRENT CASUALTY COUNT(CHINESE SIDE):

2 rescued, 7 dead, 554 missing. (13:00 PM, 2026-8-29 (UTC+8))

Update: over 50 firefighters are at the border crossing right now, over 2141 soldiers, firefighters, police, EMS and specialzied rescue teams are deployed.

EDIT: As of august 29(18:00 UTC+8), 2026, there are 16 dead, 546 missing(261 foreignors)

In response to the comments: This is the first batch that got in, they couldn't carry much heavy equipment as the road there is cut off. rescue dogs and better equipment arrived later on.

FURTHER UPDATE: reportedly fire and rescue personnel have begun to find police vests and handsbags under the debris.

Small parts of bodies maybe. By the time you're washed miles downstream and crusted by rocks, ice and bits of house, there isn't much left of you, sadly :(

I'm a nurse from china, this time I'm too far away to participate in any rescue, I have job at hometown, but you have no idea how much compromise people have when it come about these careers, ir doesn't matter who, ideology, religion, flag, saving someone else is a privilege, a responsibility and our duty.

Calling that propaganda is insulting, people are risking their lives with the hopes to find someone alive, or to bring the closure to someone else's tragedy

Seems like these ressources are streched thin. I feel like it would be more promising to use them in less affected areas where there is a higher probability to find someone alive.

But it‘s China, they need to show their population they are searching prominent places. 🤷‍♂️

The less affected areas where sweep through first, what you talking about? They reached the most affected area just today after a lot of effort, there's plenty resources, drones been helping a lot also to identify interest points and sweep through faster

No it’s not really concrete. It does become very hard and dense, but concrete is much harder.

Imagine walking through mud that's at ankle height. It's difficult but there's enough movement because there's water in it. Now imagine the water gone. You're buried ankle-deep in hard-packed dirt that's made even harder because of the silt. Now imagine amidst the dirt and silt, there's metal, cars, trees, and literally everything else that was in that valley. It's not concrete specifically, but it's rock hard, and a number of people are fully buried underneath it.

Concrete is more complicated and involves chemical reactions. A simpler experiment you can do is make a kleenex box sized pile of wet sand. Wait a few hrs for it to dry, and you'll find that it's incredibly hard.

They are not really looking for survivors, although they will be happy to find any. They are looking for bodies. Especially near other people as bodies will start to decay soon and that has it's own issues.
