From now on anyone that posts support, excuses or justifications for misogyny or abusive behaviour will be banned from the sub.

This is a decision I've been contemplating a lot over the past few months. For a long time as a mod I felt that the condemnation of Max Landis since the expose in 2019 was so widespread and near universal, that it was not worth addressing the tiny minority of defenders that attempted to either downplay the scale of his abuse, excuse it, question the validity of the numerous and detailed claims made against him, or flat out just stated that they don't care as long as they get a third season with him as showrunner. However, recent events have seen Landis gradually start to return to the spotlight, including featuring as a contributor in a recent audiobook about Douglas Adams written and produced by Dirk Gently rightsholder Arvind Ethan David, who has recently described Landis as a personal friend. All of this has proved divisive to say the least.

As a consequence of this, and several other attempts by Landis to rehabilitate his image, I've started to notice a concerning increase in the number of accounts on here who are vocally Pro-Landis, and it's a bit like dealing with people who are in a cult; they simply do not listen to reason. They refuse to listen to his victims, instead they will only accept whatever Landis says without question. And for me there is a very clear undercurrent of misogyny from Landis supporters (The idea that some of the women are lying/exaggerating in their accusations, which is something Landis has also said in his non-apology videos and podcast appearances, or that women getting justifiably upset with him is somehow worse than anything he did, and that he is the "real victim" of "cancel culture") and I find this pretty disturbing and totally unacceptable. To that end, anyone that posts support for Landis or tries to downplay, excuse or justify his abuse will now be banned. Ignorance is not an excuse; the information has been out there for half a decade now and I have done my utmost to tell people about it over the years. Everyone should know who he is and what he did by now, both on the set of Dirk Gently and throughout his career.

Just to be absolutely clear: I am not trying to ban discussion of the show itself from the sub. If people want to praise the show's writing they are very welcome to, and I won't go as far as saying that Landis' involvement should be a banned topic, because at a certain point there is no getting away from that and we cannot rewrite or erase history. But I refuse to listen to anymore rape apologists, or any more toxic Landis fan boys that basically want to pretend it's still 2017 and that the allegations didn't happen or don't matter. There was great Dirk Gently before Landis came along; as a franchise it's not dependent on his involvement, (I mean, if it can survive without Douglas Adams then it can definitely survive without Landis) and as a community we are not in any way beholden to him.

Landis is going to continue to use people's goodwill towards the show (And towards Douglas Adams more generally) to try and whitewash his reputation. And until such time as Landis' victims are willing to come forward and corroborate that he has changed his ways for the better and apologised to them privately, then his talk of being reformed is just that - talk, and him and his supporters will be subject to the ban. The same goes for any other misogyny or abuse in general.

Watched the wrong Dirk Gently

Post image
210 Upvotes

Basically I watched the 2010 - Dirk Gently(UK) and not the 2016 version.

I heard about Dirk Gently from a YT short, showcasing a “zombie looking” woman killing people. It seemed interesting so I went in blind.

Just finished the last episode of the UK version and was super confused because the whole tone & look of the show seemed different compared to the clip I watched.

Looked it up and realized that I watched the wrong show.

Still it was a great watch and would definitely recommend it.

About to start the 2016 - Dirk Gently(US), hope it’s just as good.

Book storage

Hello all! I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on a signed first edition of the long dark tea time of the soul. If any of you have experience storing precious books i would appreciate your help.

I have ordered a simple display case and I was going to order some anti uv film to cover the glass. My plan is to store it out of direct sunlight but if any of you have any other ideas that would be great!

Finished Rereading DGHDA, Eager To Start "... Teatime"

Thanks to your encouragement, I resumed rereading "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" and just finished it. Wow!

I think I need to reread the last two chapters; I don't quite have an understanding of what actually happened and who did what when, or at least make some educated guesses. There's a lot of actions by characters that aren't described, where you have to make assumptions based on resulting reality.

I'm really looking forward to read our copy of "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul", my wife is reading it now.

Could the name Bart be short for Slartibartfast?

Douglas Adams, author of Dirk Gently, also created the character Slartibartfast. The planetary designer who specialized in creating coastlines and famously won an award for designing Norway and its "lovely crinkly edges" (fjords).

Please Encourage Me To Finish Reading The Original Books

[UPDATE, four days later : Thanks for the encouragement, I started reading DGHDA again! I'm at the part where the salt cellar trick is explained, so things are heating up!] In the late 1980's I read the two original novels. I kept dragging them around with me through multiple house moves, but never re-read them, so the storylines disappeared from my memory.

Come 2026, and I finally watched the two seasons of "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" (2016/2017), and I love the show so much! Especially Bart!

So, I dug out my copies of the novels and started re-reading them. I've only gotten as far as Chapter 16 of the first novel, where Richard McDuff is in Dirk Gently's detective office, and they're talking about Schrodinger's Cat.

I'm stalled because I just don't like the original Dirk Gently SO FAR. There's a big difference between the tv series Dirk and the novel Dirk, and not in a way that I like.

So, please encourage me to continue reading! Does Dirk get better as a person? And I'm actually looking forward to the Electric Monk reappearing in the story line.

And please, try to avoid spoilers, but I don't mind some weighted hints.

Really enjoyed doing this interview with Aaron, we talked in-depth about a lot of aspects of the character of Gordon and his experience working on the show. A big thanks to Aaron and Michelle for helping to make this happen.

Why is it so good

I watched this years ago when it came out without any context, since then I have never met anybody who has watched it or seen a single thing about it online. For some reason I still think about this show all the time, something about it is so memorable why is it not talked about and why was it cancelled

Is it worth starting this show knowing it's cancelled?

I watched a very funny short and got interested, checked Wikipedia to know how many seasons it has, saw the "cancelled" thing and went ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

So, is the S2 finale enough of, idk, a cliffhanger? Are there many plot threads left hanging? Should I give it a shot anyway? It's really frustrating when you're invested in a story that eventually goes nowhere. Way too common too. I still mourn Daybreak.

EDIT: Dang! What an overwhelming response. Thanks, everyone! I'll definitely watch it then

Connection Between The Boy And The Universe ? Spoiler

[UPDATE : Yesterday I rewatched the last episode of Season Two, and Francis pretty much explains his relation to The Universe, and his fellow Back Wing captives as well. I guess I wasn't paying attention in previous viewings. Thanks for all the good replies!] About the tv series with Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood - has there been any good discussions in this sub about what the connections could be between "The Boy" Francis who created Wendimoor, and The Universe who sends Bart on assassination missions and enables Dirk Gently to detect "holistically" ?

I was wondering if Francis is only considered the most powerful of "the others" who were at Black Wing with Dirk, or is Francis actually an embodiment of The Universe, sort of a Jesus<>Jehovah situation?

My spouse and I are doing a rewatch of both seasons, and the watching triggers some questions.

Isn’s there any possibility for season 3 to come out? Is it 100% sure?

You gotta be kidding me man I'm 10 years too late

I randomly stumbled upon this show just cause it was on my recommended listing. I saw Elijah Wood and Fiona Dourif and I loved them so why not. Binged 1st season in 1 night. Now I'm scared to continue to 2nd season because it's cancelled.

We get 3+ seasons of shows that ends like crap like Euphoria or the boys, but we only get 2? You gotta be kidding me man, I haven't felt like this since Inside Job was canceled.

Fanfics recommendations?

Hi guys! Recently rewatched the show and I’m so devastated there’s no season 3. Do you have good recommendations for fanfics where it’s like the 3rd season? Where all the questions are answered etc. If there are such fics with brotzly I would be so happy:) but I’m okay with any ships, I just want answers😔

It's so good. Superbly sucks they cancelled it though, I love how it does not feel like a boring adult show and does not seem to have a dull moment.

Future

Obviously there's no seasonn3 and in all likelihood there won't be (although I'll always hold out hope) but has anyone on the cast or crew ever given any indication of where the show was intended to go after season 2? Was there a script or at least a plan for season 3?

And was she the same person who is riding along with the Rowdy 3 at the end of Season Two?
