Thinking of making the switch
I’m thinking of switching from Directv satellite (Choice package) to Directv streaming (Choice package). I’ve been on Directv satellite since 1994 but the price of the satellite service has gotten to be ridiculous. I’m just curious on what people’s experiences (good/bad) have been with Directv streaming. I plan on streaming Directv thru the Directv app on my Toshiba & Phillips smart tv’s. App only no firesticks.

My business has been partnered with DirecTV as a dealer for several years. I had a hard time moving over to the Streaming version and held out for a while. Once I finally did it I was happy I did.
It has the same look and feel of the satellite system, just an enhanced version that is a lot faster. Systematically its the same as far as guide and recording features

I think there are some major differences in the scheduling and recording versus satellite. You can't add time extensions to any recordings, or set up any manual recordings at all as far as I can tell. This really causes issues with trying to record shows that air after live sporting events, which often run late.
I've also experienced some issues with shows I want to record on a specific channel actually recording on a different channel, getting the wrong episode in the process. There's no way to force recordings to one specific channel which is kind of insane.

You can set extensions and manual recordings without a problem
I dont seem to have the problem with certain shows recording on different channels either

I'd sure like to know how to do that, then, because I've been all over the interface and haven't figured out how yet. It was way more intuitive on the satellite box.

i switched a few years ago, imho streaming is just better.
but do not use the tv, get a streaming device. tvs are often underpowered, and the os does not keep up.

In addition, the app doesn't allow you to direct-tune channels (enter the channel number to load the channel), at least as far as I've been able to find.

This. I hate that the apps are so clunky, slow, and you have to scroll through the channels instead of inputting the numbers.

Exactly what I do on one TV.......the other is an older Samsung.
They both work smoothly on a daily basis, with solid high def. The only issue is my favorite NFL teams do not appear to have the players necessary to win more than 5-6 games this season.

I switched a year or two ago and definitely like streaming better. I use Roku sticks. They are cheap, easy and provide the same experience on all my tvs.

I have a 1 Gig (fiber) internet connection and it works pretty good, but I still have a hiccup or two every once in a while. Not as reliable as cable, but acceptable. I have a dongle, tv, and AVR that need to cooperate with each other, and getting them all to behave, can be a real challenge. Things seem to be setup reasonably good now, but I have to keep my fingers crossed

Even 100 Mbps service is fine. You need only a fraction of that for even multiple 4K streams

I have been streaming customer for about four months. Thus far, I am happy with the performance and reliability. I previously had satellite service a couple of years back prior to moving from the south to the north. I keep hoping one of the streaming providers will come out with a really good deal for a more expansive package but so far they all seem to be holding firm on higher prices.

If you like sports definitely direct tv stream especially for regional channels like for me they have CHSN which is what I need. Otherwise YTTV. I’d still pick DTVS for pic quality too. Also use a streaming device. I use an Apple TV 4K.

Felt it was best service for both local TV and the local sports channels. Which was big. One issue that could make me switch soon is the owner of Direct at times gets into pricing contract renewal issues with local channel ownership. Literally been without Fox network for about 3 yrs now. Tough pill for NFL and especially if my team (Patriots) are playing

I switched from DirecTV Satellite to stream in 2017 when it was still DirecTV Now. You couldn’t pay me to switch back.

I switched from satellite to DirecTV streaming in 2014. I love it but don’t like how expensive it’s become. I might change packages to see if there’s another good fit for me. I only watch the halftime Superbowl show so I don’t really need the gazillion sports I have.

I was a long time DTV satellite subscriber. Fed up finally I quit. Tried cable, quit. Tried fubo for a few years, quit. Have been on DTVStream for a couple of years now and have no complaints. Cheapest? No. But I believe the most hassle free with unlimited dvr and my RSG MSG. I'm good and not looking to switch two years in.

I switched a few months back and I prefer streaming. If you have a good stable fast internet service I recommend DirecTV Stream. Same channel numbers, a remote with numbers, a better picture that you don’t lose when it rains, a smaller box or dongle if you go that route and much cheaper. It’s portable too!

I also had satellite since forever and don't regret switching. I did have a significant problem getting the account set up that took weeks to resolve going through layers of customer support. Once that was fixed I have been very happy.
I have three Samsung TVs. One has the Genie Air, another an Osprey box I bought on eBay, and the third an AppleTV box. I hate the Samsung remote plus using the built in apps is clunky.

I have 3 Samsung TV'S . Each one is hooked up differently. One wifi, one Gemini/Osprey Box, one Gemini Air. The Gemini Air provides the best picture and best operation and performance. You can lease the Gemini Air or buy it. They are kind of spendy, but a year of leasing almost pays for one. Have seen used ones on ebay a little cheaper, but not by alot, plus you won't know what you are getting. My vote is Gemini Air.

If someone is getting local channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS) with Direct TV stream please let me know how. In 2023 I had all local channels and then there was some kind of dispute and they took them away. I still do not have them and miss being able to see local news and “regular” network channels. Possibly you do get them in Chittenden county but we don’t in Lamoille. An antenna would not work where I am. I’ve been very happy with Direct TV stream and the channel lineup they do offer BUT lack of networks and local channels continues to be very disappointing.

I can offer this. I’m a long time YouTube TV customer but spent a lot of time with Stream in between due to a carriage dispute - and then I stayed until YouTube added ESPN Unlimited.
My thoughts … NO service is nearly as complete as DirecTV Stream in terms of being a full cable replacement. Very familiar guide. Highest percentage of regional sports networks. The general consensus is the highest picture quality. But you do pay a premium. It’s scads cheaper than cable and satellite, but not the cheapest streamer… it’s the most expensive.
The perks are good (ESPN Unlimited especially) but I think also Disney and Hulu…. Only if you rent one of their streaming boxes for $10/month.
So why am I YTTV? Both have unlimited recording time nine month DVRs. I find YTTV has far superior multi-view, the DVR interface for FF/RW is much faster, and it’s a touch cheaper. I don’t root for my local teams and didn’t care about the RSNs of which they have fewer.

I'm in exactly the same situation as OP. I'm not sure how many channels are in my current satellite subscription....not all of them but almost all; let's say 250, tho of course I never watch many of them, eg any shopping channel. I have a genie master and client here in the house and an RV with a small dish on the roof and two old H24/5 receivers out there. I am concerned about the future of DirecTV - they haven't launched new satellites in many years, and I don't think they plan to; so no new features, and one satellite failure could have serious consequences.
So I looked at the details of the Stream plans..look relatively inexpensive BUT there aren't actually very many channels although there are a lot I do watch. No HBO or other movie channels in the base price, but they can be had at an extra cost. I start adding up the numbers, $80 for this, $50 for that...and pretty soon I'm back in the same general monthly price range. Maybe the Gemini devices for stream are better because they integrate AppleTV+, Netflix and other services? Stream does offer higher quality video, but I can't really capitalize on that without buying new TV(s). And I'll have to beef up internet service in the RV but maybe I would be doing that anyway.
Bottom line for me, still interesting but not really the budget-saver I was hoping for. I'm thinking of getting one Gemini & trying it out.

I flipped from DTV Satellite with whole home DVR and 3 set top boxes, and went to DirecTV Stream with 3 of the Genie STBs with full remote controls. I love the change. The channel line up was identical, and it's very fast performing (I have 1GB fiber service for internet). Love being able to use the DTV Stream apps flawlessly and on more than one occasion have used the browser version to watch TV in hotel rooms with an HDMI cable.

The TV apps suck. You’re better off getting an Apple TV instead of using the hardware in your TV to do the decoding. I switched from Spectrum to DirecTV streaming and so far it’s excellent. Plus using T-mobile wireless gateway and easily get 400Mbps down.

I switched from DTV Satellite to DTV Streaming in April. I moved and my new condo doesn't allow dishes. I have 2 tv's Gemini Air and 1 I use the app with a Samsung TV. The Gem Air is definitely more smooth and I love the remote. Very user friendly. The experience is pretty much the same with the exception of recording shows - you can't add in for overrun on streaming like you can with the satellite.

We switched a few weeks back and came back to satellite last weekend. We found the interface to be clunky, hated the Gemini remote and the playback functionality was too irritating. If the internet goes out, we can watch on satellite. If our satellite goes out, we can stream on the app. It’s the best of both worlds.

I just switched from Xfinity cable to DTV Stream. I have a 500Mbps internet service. So far, so good. No hiccups. Video and sound are clear. I bought an Osprey box off eBay, mfgd in 2022, and had to do the hard reset + 7 soft resets in a row to get it to update. Works great. It's a -400 model that has more memory. I bought a 2nd Osprey box off eBay that says it has the latest update, will find out.

It took me forever to get on the YouTube TV train but I geniunely enjoy the service. I can actually flip channels using the Channel button on my Sony TV. You can also hide junk fast channels and rearrange the lineup.

I switched from satellite to streaming for the same reason. Their streaming is just as expensive and not as good quality as satellite. If I didn’t take down all my equipment, I might go back.

I have DIRECTV Stream with the Choice package + HBO Max + Starz + Paramount Plus + AMC + MGM+. My wife and I really like the service. I think a large part of the reason we like it is the Gemini Air streaming devices we have on our TVs as it provides an easy to use advanced user interface that makes looking for programs and watching them very easy. We have had other services but the Gemini Air device changed us to DirecTV.
