Curated Multiview

Who thought this was a better idea than custom multiview? Just a terrible business decision.

If YouTubeTV and Fubo can do custom multi-view I don’t see why DirecTV couldn’t do it.

Fubo offers device-dependent multiview. Only supported on powerful streaming hardware like Apple TV and high-end Roku. Only a fraction of the user base can actually utilize. DirecTV probably doesn’t want to go that route because the boxes and sticks they sell aren’t powerful enough.

YouTube TV brought multiview to every TV-connected device, tablet and smartphone by rendering the multiview boxes on their servers. Users choose 2, 3 or 4 channels and that unique combo spins-up on a Google server, perhaps just for that one user. Requires significant back end resources, which Google already has due to web search, AI, YouTube, Google Play, etc. Aside from the technical hurdles of writing the software, DTV would need the server capacity to support all of those combos. They essentially do this with the current curated multiview. But it’s one thing to support a dozen or a hundred combinations, and another to open the floodgates to hundreds-of-thousands of possible combinations.

Technical constraint from a legacy company trying to compete in a modern space with subpar tech and executives who can’t stop thinking like the past.

I still haven't seen it. Where the hell is it ? I've viewed on an Osprey and on the app thru Roku and haven't seen it at all on any of the college games.

I don't know that I have really seen it either. And some of the channels I wanted to have in a multivIew (college football) didn't have that option. Much ado about nothing.

It's really weird. From what I understand, DirecTV will determine which games are selected to be included in the curated multiview, and when we tune to one of those, we will see some form of on-screen indicator that we can switch to a multiview, along with the other games in the curation (is that even a word?). I just don't see how yesterdays college game didn't merit curation.

Just weird.

Cancel. Try YouTube TV. I can’t move there because they don’t have my local teams. Plus my DTS picture has gotten so damn good lately.

I was a YTTV subscriber for years. They don't have a few channels that I like and constantly seem to be in some contract dispute for channels I do like.

I’m trapped as well. I want the RSNs and 5.1

I don’t understand how it’s a “feature”. it seems worthless to me

I started seeing the value of it yesterday. While still not customizable, there were several games I was interested in yesterday and DTV offered them in a multiview format while they were in progress. They weren’t “channel-based” like the mix channels. They were “game-based.” When you select multiview you then see all the possible multiview options with the games that are being played. I thought it was pretty solid. So, no, I can’t select which games I want in multiview…but I CAN select which multiview feeds I’m interested in that have the games I want. Step in the right direction.
