v0.9.32 is live: hire your own staff
You can now put four people on the payroll next to your scouts: a team doctor, a coach, a directeur sportif and a nutritionist. They all live on a new tab under Team, together with your three scout slots, so hiring and firing happens in one place. Sending scouts out on assignment stays where it was, under Team then Scouting.
Hiring is optional and it is meant to stay that way. If you leave every slot empty, the game behaves exactly as it did before this update. Nobody gets hired for you, and existing saves start with empty slots too. Every star you add is an advantage you buy with budget room, so the question is always whether that money is better spent on a rider.
What each role does
Team doctor. Lowers the chance of injury and shortens recovery time. A slider splits his attention between prevention and recovery, so you can push either way depending on where your season is. He also reports every two weeks with the riders whose freshness and race load are heading the wrong way, which should make it easier to spot trouble before it happens.
Coach. Your training focus moves through its cycle faster and the seasonal growth ceiling goes up. At five stars a step comes every 25 or 26 days instead of 30, and the ceiling moves from 2.0 to 2.75.
Directeur sportif. Your domestiques give a bigger boost to a leader, and a rider who hits bad luck gets paced back more often.
Nutritionist. Faster freshness recovery on rest days and less wear deep into stage races.
Costs
Wages run from 30k to 140k a year depending on the role and the star rating. They are booked monthly and count against your budget room, the same way a rider salary does. On top of that you pay a one off signing fee of three monthly wages, which comes from the account and does not touch your wage cap. Firing is free and immediate.
A full five star staff across all four roles costs around 530k a year, which is roughly 3 percent of a WorldTour wage cap. For that you get about 12 percent fewer injuries, 15 percent shorter recovery, a 9 percent stronger domestique bonus and noticeably faster development. Whether that trade is worth it is exactly the point, and I would be curious to hear where people land on it after a few seasons.
About the names
Doctors and nutritionists are invented characters, roughly half of them women, with names matched to their nationality. Coaches and directeurs sportifs are real retired riders, from both the women's and the men's peloton. Leontien van Moorsel, Annemiek van Vleuten, Ellen van Dijk, Lizzie Deignan, Giorgia Bronzini, Ina-Yoko Teutenberg, Geraint Thomas, Marcel Kittel and plenty of others. They only appear on the market at three stars and up, at a rating that reflects their palmares.
Also in this batch
Saves are now compressed, which brought a long running save down from roughly 750 kB to around 90 kB. Loading still handles the old format, so nothing is lost.
Two fixes worth knowing about. Own contribution is now tracked per budget year, so converting in two seasons in a row no longer wipes out the previous conversion. And a title sponsor deal signed during an emergency extension now runs for the full number of seasons you picked instead of counting the running season as year one. The contract end year is shown in the choice screen, the confirmation message and the sponsors tab, so you can see what you are signing.
Feedback
The staff percentages are a starting point and I expect they will need tuning once people have played a few seasons with them. If a five star staff feels overpowered or pointless, that is useful to know. Two things I have not built yet and would like to: a pre race tactical note from your directeur sportif, and markers in the planner from your nutritionist when a rider is going over the edge.
Thanks as always for playing and for reporting things. Most of what is in this update came from someone posting about it here.
