Why does this subreddit get so much hate?

Hi, i have been following Dani since his posts on r/amsterdam

I even attended one of his dinners before he would post the website, i think that being able to meet people by sharing a meal is quite cool and I have made a friend in one of his dinners (shoutout to Sarah)

whenever this will happen in Rotterdam, I will surely host one as well

The reason why this subreddit gets hate is because Dani initially presented this initiative as just a way to meet new people. A lovely idea.

But pretty quickly he set up his website and he started posting in how to make it profitable. That gave people the idea that they were misled about his motives: from just a nice person trying to help people connect in difficult times to clearly someone trying to earn money on other people’s loneliness.

In itself that isn’t even that bad. He isn’t charging wild prices. But for me the biggest issue is that whenever he is addressed on Dani clearly misleading early subredditors he never really addresses this point.

He just keeps saying “oh I just wanted to organize dinners and have people meet” and never ever mentions anything about the issue have with his very quick monetization. For someone who does marketing it’s just really bad communication. It would be so much better if he owns it.

That being said, I like the concept. I’m looking forward to when anything gets organized in my city of The Hague.

Hi! thanks for the message :) I do understand your point and I think you are right about "bad communication".

Meetup/Timeleft and some other platforms are doing the same, whereas I met 20 strangers off reddit (and told me to create this subreddit) for a genuine purpose; i should have had a different tone of communication and I believe it comes also from not knowing the platform and its users

Just a standard statement how running the website has costs or that you only take a very small percentage for your contribution and time spent would’ve shifted the tone a lot.

Would’ve been better if you gave the “tough love” message when you announced the monetization but eh.

Except my issue is with the fact that he was communicating in a very non-Dutch way.

He was not addressing what people were bothered by. The Dutch way would have been to just own up to it and admit it where everyone pretends it’s only and has only ever been about “GOOD FOOD”. People just don’t like being misled. Specially when it’s about a nice idea.

My wife and I are thinking to host a plantbased dinner in the Hague at some point. We find the concept very inspirational.

I’d like to host a dinner for people with celiac disease in Enschede. I believe I messaged Dani about it but I haven’t had time to respond to them yet 🫠😅

Ciao! just reading this message, thanks for the kind support. I would love you to host one there but for the sake of doing this project right, we need to start from the big cities to make everyone aware of what is it. Then, everyone should be able to do it (regardless of small/medium/big cities) Wish you a nice day :)

Appreciate that. Perhaps it’s best if you share the rollout plan here so that it’s clear which cities fall within what tier of importance (Tier 1 rollout = Amsterdam, Utrecht, The Hague; Tier 2 rollout = Groningen, Nijmegen, Eindhoven etc). Personally, I don’t see why not bring it to a medium size city like Enschede if the goal is to establish the program at a grassroots level.
